Pair Of Wrestlers Take State Looking forward to dominance in the Utah high school wrestling world, the season has been a step- ping stone for the future of the sport at Alta. The list of victories has been ex- tensive. especially the satisfying vic- tory over Bingham in the Battle of the Hammer to keep the six year tradition alive and well. The Hawks stayed strong and healthy for the region tournament, where the wrestlers placed a re- spectable second place behind the eventual state champion Brighton. Going into state, heavyweight Ke- vin Bouwman was picked to win by a large margin. He risked an unde- feated 34-0 record in the finals to win a close descision 3-0. ‘‘Pound for Pound, there’s nobody in the state he can’t beat,” commented Coach Lunak. Alan Kerbs captured the state championship in the 119 pound divi- sion with his excellent 36-1 record. Also at the state tournament, oth- er fine performances were dis- played. Jason Deollos placed fourth in the 138 pound division, while Mark Thomas and Dave Hall placed sixth in the 112 pound and 167 pound divisions respectively. Overall the Hawks took sixth place with 88 points, very close behind 3rd. The Hawk Wrestlers have shown consistency, finishing in the top six places in the state tournament in the past several years. Coach Lunak gives instructions while James Flipping his opponent. Dave Hall dominates Cherry. Dave Hall, and Andy Mauch watch his match trom the bench 58 Wrestling

Involved in all sports from football to gymnastics, letterpeople work hard all year to win for themselves the ever-coveted A jackets, letters, and pins representing each task completed. Alta hit an alltime high for letter people this year with a list that went right off the page. Two sportspeople that haven’t been well recognized for their efforts are Michelle Lambert and Mike Pratt. They are the only representa- tives form Alta involved in water- sports. Michelle swims everday with the Cottonwood High team, and her hard work has paid off. As the only swimmer from the school. Michelle placed an exceptional twentieth in the state competition. Mike dives three days a week to perfect his form for competition. His coach. Kurt Warnke, is widely known as a competitive diver, and pushes Mike to do his best. It’s not that hard, said Mike. “I’m having a blast and that’s all that counts.” Michelle Lambert, swm team letterwoman. takes a second to txeathe as she preapres herself for State competition Unafraid of dangers below.
