Wrestlers HAMMER THEIR WAY To Victory It’s simple, only the strong survive on the rugged wrestling mats. Coach Mitch Lunak guaranteed that wrestling was the toughest sport in high school. Anyone could try out for the team, but they had to grapple through vigor- ous workouts, and only half of the peo- ple who tried out made the team. The battle for the HAMMER started in 1980 and Alta has won every year. This year was no exception as the close match came down to the final heavyweight match. Kevin Bouwman destroyed the Bingham Miner and helped take home the hammer. A serious hazzard which wrestlers were concerned with was improper weight reduction. commented Coach Lunak. The reason wrestlers lost weight was so they could be stronger in a weaker weight group. Since wrestling season began during the holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas weren’t as enjoyable for some wrestlers. Going into state competition Brighton was Alta’s toughest opponent. Alan Kerbs and Kevin Bouwman were Alta strongest competitors.
