FEATURE 26 Foreign Exchange tudents Add A Foreign Flare Ahh! Utah. The sights, the sounds, the excitement. Five lucky teenagers were sent here from all different parts of the world, not knowing quite what to expect. The students were able to come to the United States through a Foreigh ex- change program. Iban Garaikioetxea, a senior from Pamplona, Spain, is a ski en- thusiast with an extremely charming sense of humor. Iban is actually from Basque Country, a small city in the north of Spain, where most inhabitants want it to become a separate country. When asked what he would tell his friends if they were to come to Utah, Iban replied, “I would tell them to carry skis.” Iban has enjoyed his temporary home and has made a lot of new friends. Ronaldo Marin, a senior from Sao Paulo. Brazil, always wanted to come to America, so he joined the foreign ex- change program. The only major culture shock for him was seeing snow for the first time. Knut Simon, a senior from Hamburg, Germany, had heard a lot about America, and even took English in the fifth grade. He really has enjoyed Utah, taking part in many parties, with his newly made friends. Knut has noticed how different the education programs between the two countries are. “School is a lot harder in Germany.” Jan Gleltin is a junior from Lillehammer, Norway, and was curious to see what the lifestyles in America were like. He thinks that Utah is quite nice, but he, like the others, noticed the strict regulations on alcohol. On the other hand, he has loved “this experience to live in Utah.” Sachiko Okamoto, a junior from Osaka, Japan, was very enthusiastic when she heard of the foreign exchange program. “I wanted to make many American friends, learn the customs and language.” She loves the mountains but isn’t used to the cold weather. One of Sachiko’s biggest frustrations is her inexperience with the English language. “It’s hard when people don’t understand me.” Although it’s hard to come to a new country with different customs and tradi- tions, the foreign exchange students have enjoyed their stay in the United States. Foreign exchange students. Renaldo Marin and Iban Garaikioetxea work diligently to find the translation ol holy beathonk.
