erkeley Beckons Debaters The first few weeks are definitely the most difficult, whether it’s taking notes or putting 600 pieces of evidence in order. Nobody says it’s easy, but in the long run it pays off. During the debate season, policy, or team debate was chalked up first. Alta fared moderately well whether the debat- ers were at Alta, the University of Utah, or even Lehi High School. “In policy debate, one learns to present a solution to a major problem.“ states advisor Mr. Ochoa. When the policy debate season ebbed, there were many individual events. First, there was impromptu which requires the speaker two to four minutes to speak on a topic just recieved. There is also extempt, a six to eight minute speech on national or foregin topics. Oratory is an eight min- ute prepared speech on just about any- thing the speaker wishes. Finally, there is the Licoln-Douglas (or L.D.) debate, which is a one-on-one debate discussing underlying values. “For an individual, de- bate enhances the ability to learn, and it also develops self-confidence.” con- cludes Mr. Ochoa. Debaters must be somewhat devoted; there was a debate tournament just about every weekend of the season, all of them were not mandatory, in fact it was not nessasary to compete in one. Varsity Debate partners. Ben Valerio and Su- zanne Payne, receive a trophy for double octo round finalists at the Universtiy of Cali- fornia at Berkeley. Day after day, week after week, stu- dents face the same boring schedule. Once in a while an occasion will arise and give reason to break the monotony — an important football or basketball game, a holiday or annual festivities. On these days, classes are cut short and an assem- bly is presented in an attempt to raise school spirit. Assemblies were presented for such occasions as Christmas, com- plete with Santa and his dancing reindeer, Homecoming, and the annual parade and skits, Winterfest, complete with ice skat- ing and skiing events and the junior week assembly. Dave Park mentioned. “It’s a lot more fun to be in the assembly than it is to watch it.” The majority of assemblies held were spirit assemblies, where classes competed with skits and cheers. Other outstanding assemblies were A Day in the Life of Alta” — a photo slide show of a typical school day and a self esteem assembly presented by Rich Wilkerson.
