inter Stick Or Die! UTAH - known as the place with the greatest snow on earth, or even the ski capitol of the world. Skiing was quite a popular sport in the state of Utah and there are numerous rea- sons why. There were spectacular moun- tains on which to ski on, the snow was the best on the face of the Earth, and it was basically the most dominant sport in the state. The mainstay of the ski resorts were in the Wasatch Mountain Range. The Wom- ens’ World Cup ski season even began Park City, something that had never hap- pened before in the United States. The sport of skiing carried the greatest tourism revenue for the state of Utah and made millions of dollars for the local re- sorts. So why is Utah the ski capitol of the world? “It has the best snow, cheapest runs, shortest lines and alot of runs,” sums up Jenifer Compton. Skiing has been quite a popular sport for a long while, but now there is a new trend in the winter sport world, snow- ------------ FEATURE ——i boarding. Snowboarding was restricted from ski resorts because when it first came out snowboards didn’t have metal edges and they easily got out of control. The closest you can come to snow- boarding are mono-skiis which are posi- tioned forward unlike the snowboard which have the feet positioned into a surf- ing style, which the sport has been com- pared to. Since there were no resorts for snow- boarders, they had to settle for trudging up a mountain in order to snowboard down. “Part of snowboarding is to hike on your own. Just you and the mountain,” states Doug Waddoups. Taking first m giani slalom of the Utah Winter Games.
