Overcrowding. This problem was on the minds of most teachers even more this year. Class sizes of near forty were commonplace and halls were packed with students who often used these crowds as tardy excuses. As teachers geared up to face even a larger sea of faces, they realized that times were not going to soon improve. Governor Bangerter suggested that teachers use more innovative ways to face the depersonalization of educa- tion. To many Utah teachers, who have some of the nation’s largest classrooms and teach in a state that allots the smallest dollar amount per student in America, this suggestion was an insult. With Utah students traditionally placing above average nationally in academic perfor- mance. teachers felt that they shouldn’t have to be the sole answer to education’s woes. Less money for education and an ever-growing student population caused many teachers to not only question the future of their profession but also to sense the awareness of tougher times ahead.
