“The most rewarding aspect of per- forming in a school musical is hearing the applause of the audience ’ Bryon Goff. atch The Birdie! Packed audiences greeted the huge cast of the fall musical. BYE, BYE, BIRD- IE. The show opened on November 19th to a sold out auditorium, and played the following three nights to sold-out audi- ences. The story, set in 1957, follows the last few free days of teen idol Conrad Birdie (Danny Ray) before he goes into the army. As one last gimmick, Conrad’s manager, Albert Peterson, (Byron Goff) and secretary. Rose Alverez (Wendy James) choose one member of the Birdie fan club to be the lucky one to kiss Con- rad on the Ed Sullivan Show. The girl cho- sen is Kim MacAfee, (Wendy Wood) who resides in the small town of Sweet Apple, Ohio. With the news of the singers arrival, the entire town gets decked out to welcome the famous celebrity. The female popula- tion goes wild while the guys of the town, especially Kim’s steady. Hugo Peabody, (Scott Neilson) make no secret of their eternal dislike of Conrad Birdie. The adventures continue in Sweet Ap- ple and as Kim goes back to Hugo, Con- rad makes it out of town alive, and Albert despite his mother’s (Angela Hill) objec- tion, finally marries his Rosie. “It was great,’’ said an awestruck Amy Mitton, “I couldn’t believe it was a high school show!” Opening to rave reviews such as this, the many weeks of hard work and rehearsals paid off for this cast of over 100 “Bird Watchers.” Dreammg of the life they could have together. inter Stick Or Die! UTAH - known as the place with the greatest snow on earth, or even the ski capitol of the world. Skiing was quite a popular sport in the state of Utah and there are numerous rea- sons why. There were spectacular moun- tains on which to ski on, the snow was the best on the face of the Earth, and it was basically the most dominant sport in the state. The mainstay of the ski resorts were in the Wasatch Mountain Range. The Wom- ens’ World Cup ski season even began Park City, something that had never hap- pened before in the United States. The sport of skiing carried the greatest tourism revenue for the state of Utah and made millions of dollars for the local re- sorts. So why is Utah the ski capitol of the world? “It has the best snow, cheapest runs, shortest lines and alot of runs,” sums up Jenifer Compton. Skiing has been quite a popular sport for a long while, but now there is a new trend in the winter sport world, snow- ------------ FEATURE ——i boarding. Snowboarding was restricted from ski resorts because when it first came out snowboards didn’t have metal edges and they easily got out of control. The closest you can come to snow- boarding are mono-skiis which are posi- tioned forward unlike the snowboard which have the feet positioned into a surf- ing style, which the sport has been com- pared to. Since there were no resorts for snow- boarders, they had to settle for trudging up a mountain in order to snowboard down. “Part of snowboarding is to hike on your own. Just you and the mountain,” states Doug Waddoups. Taking first m giani slalom of the Utah Winter Games.
