“The most rewarding aspect of per- forming in a school musical is hearing the applause of the audience ’ Bryon Goff. atch The Birdie! Packed audiences greeted the huge cast of the fall musical. BYE, BYE, BIRD- IE. The show opened on November 19th to a sold out auditorium, and played the following three nights to sold-out audi- ences. The story, set in 1957, follows the last few free days of teen idol Conrad Birdie (Danny Ray) before he goes into the army. As one last gimmick, Conrad’s manager, Albert Peterson, (Byron Goff) and secretary. Rose Alverez (Wendy James) choose one member of the Birdie fan club to be the lucky one to kiss Con- rad on the Ed Sullivan Show. The girl cho- sen is Kim MacAfee, (Wendy Wood) who resides in the small town of Sweet Apple, Ohio. With the news of the singers arrival, the entire town gets decked out to welcome the famous celebrity. The female popula- tion goes wild while the guys of the town, especially Kim’s steady. Hugo Peabody, (Scott Neilson) make no secret of their eternal dislike of Conrad Birdie. The adventures continue in Sweet Ap- ple and as Kim goes back to Hugo, Con- rad makes it out of town alive, and Albert despite his mother’s (Angela Hill) objec- tion, finally marries his Rosie. “It was great,’’ said an awestruck Amy Mitton, “I couldn’t believe it was a high school show!” Opening to rave reviews such as this, the many weeks of hard work and rehearsals paid off for this cast of over 100 “Bird Watchers.” Dreammg of the life they could have together. the pace were Dave Burton, and Trevor Gough coming in first and second. Lead- ing the Homecoming Parade, the Seniors, dressed as firemen, stating “the Class of '87 is Forever on Fire.” The most unique and worthwhile aspect of the parade was Mr. Esquire, Trent Ogden, and his equally handsome attendants, Danny Ray and Todd Templeton. The Pep Rally immedi- ately followed the parade. The cheer- leaders attempted to excite the students and the football team for the upcoming game against Brighton but the rally ended abruptly with an order from the adminis- tration. The student body was upset with the interruption, foreshadowing the heart- breaking disappointment to come. In spite of inclimate weather and a small home crowd, the team displayed their practiced play execution and waged a tough battle against the Brighton Ben- gals. Rushing home from the game, students dressed their best for the evening’s Homecoming Dance. Black, red and sil- ver balloons along with long strips of red cellophane created an appropriate atmo- sphere. The week ended successfully as couples danced to the tunes of “Souve- nir.” Homecoming 13 Chosen as the winner ot Mr. Esquire. Trent Ogden and finalists Danny Ray and Todd Templeton flaunt that macho image Supporting the Hockey Club booth. Trent Gardiner prepares himself to stop incoming goals shot by fair goers.
