34 44 52 1986 PERFORMING ARTS SPORTS 1986 — What a year! — terrorism and kidnappings in the Middle East to an empha- sis on a drug free country. A year of music, movies. T.V. shows, concerts, fashions, and current events that gave the year its own personality are reviewed and printed here as a YEARbook you can pre- serve for your posterity. Hours of practice were spent by those involved in the performing arts. A’Cappella and Madrigals sang their way to the top. where they met the talented dancers of the dance company. The marching band and LasScelles entertained during halftime. The drama department put on two major productions and participated in region competitions. Alta’s athletic teams be- came well acquainted with the phrase “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat be- fore the year was over. This section captures both men’s and women’s teams, showing the results of individual and team efforts to take state. Crowd Pleasers 7

Homecoming week, assem- blies. and dances helped keep life bearable. Homecoming activities included the Alta Fair, the night pep rally, the dance, the night movie, and the game. The most popular dances were Junior Prom, Hawk Hoedown, Sweethearts. MORP, Homecoming and Christmas. Assemblies helped excite us for activities and in- form us of goings-on. Spread throughout the ac- tivity section are feature arti- cles discussing the interests of Alta Students. Included are ar- ticles on what a shoe tells about a person wearing it and reactions of foreign exchange students to Utah. Also fea- tured is the hockey club and a look at the fast growing craze for snowboarding. Advisors and staffs of the school’s publications worked many hours to ensure that deadlines were met and read- ers were entertained. The Hawkeye showed a new look this year with a new advisor and editor. The Euphony in- volved students who wished to display their literary talents, and the Accipitor captured a crowded year in picture and copy. 6 Crowd Pleasers

Guts—No Glory “HEY DUDE! COME TO THE RADICAL HOCKEY GAME AND SEE AN INTENSE BLOODBATH! Announcements like this could be heard almost every day to psy- che us up for upcoming hockey games. Sliding and slipping on a sheet of ice while trying to dodge a hunk of hard rub- ber coming towards you at 90 m.p.h. can be described as a little less than sane. Hockey team members became well ac- quainted with bruises, broken bones, and concussions before the season was over. In addition to the wild conditions, Jordon School District refuses to sanction hock- ey as a sport, so the team is defined as a club instead of as a team. Because of this ruling players have to pay S200 dollars just to play plus an additional $200-$800 on equipment. Early every Sunday morning, the team meets at Cottonwood Spa for practices which run $80 per hour. Team unity is very important and members are usually friends on and off the ice. One member explains it very briefly, “You have to al- ways play as a team or you are sure to be smashed. There’s no two ways about it. By now you may be wondering what causes a group of high school students to spend hours of hard work and up to 1000 dollars just to risk life and limb for an hour or two on the ice beating each other to a pulp. Brain damage maybe? No, not like- ly. Trent Gardiner sums it up very nicely, “Hockey is the most intense game in the world. It combines grace, speed, and agil- ity. It is more physical than even foot- ball. 8 Hockey
