An unusual spectator, Jackie Martin avidly watches a football game. Focusing on a classmate, Landon Hal- verson becomes a confidante in an im- portant conversation. WWe began skepti- cally, grouping into our unique cliques — rockers, new wavers, jocks, preppies or brains — initial reac- tions created perma- nent perceptions. Our football team, off to a wobbily start, fought on, full force to an en- thralling state cham- pionship, watching “The Day After and worrying about possi- ble nuclear devasta- tion, enjoying the sixth year of comfort- able traditions — the night pep rally, Hawk Hoedown, terrible towels and badgering freshmen, the new wave of baggy clothes, slicked down hair and thrift shop- ping — the flood of 1984 happenings en- hanced maturity and individual growth.
