DEDICATED TO THE IVILEMORY OF FANNIE J. CROSBY A cloud hung o'er Miss Crosby's home. That dimmed her earthly sight: Her eyes were closed to what we see She never beheld the light: But in her innermost soul there shone A light that few can 'see And so she breathed it forth to us In songs of melody. She might have spent her time while here In frowns and moans and sighs: Bemoaning what she could not see Of earth and trees and trees and skies: She might have, like some woulded dove. just fluttered to the floor And lain in utter helplessness A burden nothing more. But in this life we find there are Two types of men that live: One takes from others all their life, And one will always give: These noble souls though bound themselves Will give us, words of cheer, And oft the call they give to us Is loud, though sweet and clear, just so, Miss Crosby gave to us Songs, full of trust and love, For though her eyes were closed to earth She saw the home above: Is not the lesson that she gave One we should imitate To rise above environment And rising to be great? She gave us songs with depth of thought When this old world was gay The breathed of what was good and pure And not of levity: And so we find the earth was blessed By what to her was loss, The fire but made the gold more pure And took away the gloss.
