Wanting to see our classmate and her husband, we decided to go to Holdrege. When we were drinking coffee in the Hotel Dale, a nurse came in, and since the booths were filled she had to sit with us. We immediately recognized her as Betty Nicodemus. She said she was now head nurse at the Brewster Hospital. Betty was called for an emergency so we said goodbye. Finally Carol arrived. She hadn't changed much in the last ten years, just a few gray hairs here and there. She said that following the construction work was a hard life but she loved it. Our time was up so we bade farewell to our classmates and started on our journey home. To break the monotony we turned on the radio and got theconcert hour. My! Weren't we surprised as they announced their guest artist to be Marvel Haeker. After Marvel had played a few of her own compostions, she made a speech. Mert said she was kept very busy following the marines and keep- ing track of her husband nJugn. After the Concert Hour, nlt Pays to Be Ignorant.n they announced their new master of ceremonies, Gerald Hansen. Miss Mackie had given Jerry the idea of applying for the job. Since the gas tank said empty, we stopped at the Anita and Delw1n's Filling Station. The new proprietor, Delwin Schimmels, decided he liked the climate better in Missouri than in Nebraska. As we drove out of Missouri, a jeep chasing a herd of Black Angus cattle blocked the road. Before we could say anything to them we recog- nized the cow girls as Lela Norton and Marilyn Pond. They explained to us that the fence had broken and Lela hadn't gotten around to fix it. The cattle were running down the road, so they jumped in their jeep and left. Along the road in Texas, we saw many signs reading nHaeker and Hardin Oil Wells.u The names sounded familiar, so we drove to the main office. Clarence Haeker and Dee Hardin were discussing how tired they were of working for their first million but they decided to start on their second. Thinking we were little out of class, we left. Along the gulf of Florida, we stopped to eat our lunch. A passer-by happened to kick sand in our food. We looked up and saw LaDonna Fritz. She said she and her husband, Dick Turner, were on their vacation. My trusty old Chevy made this trip, but before we can make another we'll have another means of transportation.
