Of the approximately fifteen or twenty first graders who start- ed in 19Ml only three, Pauline Potter, Gloria Bartlett, and Alfred Schram, have remained to the end. We started our high school years with an enrollment of only se- ven eager freshman, full of enthusiasm and extreme ideas, which our new principal Mr. Wightman immediately curbed and directed into the right channels. As a result we did many things that year such as selling popcorn at the basketball games, having a rummage sale and a few other activities to help us along. We entered the sophomore year with one less student. That year we enjoyed to the fullest. We sold stationery and netted twen- ty-three dollars and twelve cents. We also sold candy and basket- ball pins at the basketball games and had a dime dance which left us with one hundred and thirty-four dollars and sixteen cents In our treasury and two years to go. When we came to school as Juniors we had a large grade of two girls and two boys. We went in on two plays with the three seniors that year and sold basketball pencils and pop at the basketball games. We sold twelve dollars worth of Christmas cards. Along with the sophomores a trip was made to Angelica where we had a booth at the fair. The class rings were also bought that year. All this was under the direction of Mr. Eugene Schmidt. In September, as seniors we gained one more student which mad us five, but in October two students dropped out leaving us with only three. This year out of three, Alfred Schram is Editor and Gloria Bartlett is Assistant Editor of the school paper and year- book. We have raised our treasury up to almost five hundred dol- lars under the able supervision of Mrs. Kenneth Buttke. We are now planning to go to Washington in April on our senior trip. At graduation this year Allentown High will suffer the loss of one varsity cheerleader, one varsity basketball player, and an active member In the Library Club. We will always be grateful to our parents and teachers who helped us through these twelve years, giving us encouragement when the going was rough. Gloria Bartlett: I will my cornet to Howard Palmer. I will my cheerleading uniform to my brother and hope th°t he makes it. Pauline Potter: I will my office in the Library Club to Frank Blue. I will my driving ability to Mr. Raykovitz. Alfred Schram: I will my plastic glass guard to any future victim that wants to play basketball in a fog. I will my ability to get along with girl class mates to David Green. The Varsity established a 2-6 league record and finished out of the cellar for the first time in three years. We are looking forward to an even stronger squad next year as we will have eight returning Varsity performers, losing only our lone senior, Gene Schram. The J. V. will have added man power to choose from as there are lour boys moving up from the eigth grade. It now has a membership of over one hundred members, fifty of whom are on the exempt firemans list, that is to say, have completed five consecutive years of active, loyal service to their community. This is an exception- al record for such a relatively new volunteer fire company and speaks well for the great amount of interest in fire protection for our area. In 1950, the fire company was supplemented by the organization of the Allentown Ladies Auxiliary. Their membership has never been as great as they have wished that it might be but they have made remarkable pro- gress and have on numerous occasions been of great assistance to the firemen. The fire company owns a two story fire hall which houses two modern fully-equipped fire trucks, plus the additional apparatus necessary for fighting oil fires, which is especially necessary in this area. During 1954 the fire company, in conjunction with the civil defense program, equipped its fire hall with a radio receiver and its two fire trucks with radio receivers, sending sets, and two walkie-talkies. These purchases made it possible for Allentown to participate in mutual aid assistance in conjunction with the civil defense program and also facil- itates fire fighting in our own community. Many of the firemen have taken instructions in modern fire fighting and first aid which makes them well qualified for any emergency. The Allentown Volunteer Fire Company is ready and willing to serve its community and outlying districts at all times.
