Text from Pages 1 - 124 of the 1953 volume:

poneufond As you leaf through the pages of your DERRICK, you will notice the many improvements that have been made. We of the staff have not yet seen the true DERRICK, but only the big sheets of paper on which it was planned. Although we have put much work into this, we have enjoyed it and are proud to present it for the enjoyment of its readers. The most significant improvement is—more pictures. We have added more pictures for your benefit so you may know of the activities that are being carried on in the school and in the commu- nity. We would like to give our apprecia- tion to those who have enabled us to publish this yearbook. Uma TUaten Where the trail of Allegany Meets the eastern sky. Proudly stands our Alma Mater Raising standards high; Allentown, our Alma Mater, Pair be thy reknown; Many be thy sons and daughters Dear old Allentown. DccUceitco t The Yearbook Staff would like to dedicate the 1952-3 DERRICK to Mrs. Virginia Vincent. Although she is no longer teaching, her service at Allen- town is well remembered by the student body. The Senior Class, in particular, wish to express their gratitude for the years she served as their advisor. Thus, it is with great honor that we dedicate this yearbook to a past teacher, inspiring leader and friend— Mrs. Virginia Vincent. “Soond SducatiaH 7 William Bannister President Martin Leonard Gilbert Taylor Mrs. Margaret Dannheim Clerk Harley Thompson George Wood Mr. Milton W. During our early years of school, we lost a few pupils, but gained new ones. Jim Bellamy was with us until our Sophomore Year. He then returned in our Senior Year, after living in Wellsboro. Lucia Seely started school in Allentown, but moved to Richburg. She then resumed school in Allen- town. Joyce Stephens Shields joined us in the Second Grade and has been a member of our class ever since. In our Sophomore Year, we were glad to have Gene Swarthout Join us. Having decided to work, Duane Griswold quit for a year, but rejoined us in our Junior Year. Carl Kruger went to the Scio School, but came back two years later and Don Pye came along in the Sixth Grade. Thelia Bartlett and Barbara Adams have been here all twelve years. In our Freshman Year, we sold pop com at basketball games and had some members participate in Dramatics. The Sophomore Year was put to selling fudge, having a movie and a game night. In the summer, we started our first of two summers at the Angelica Fair, which was a lot of fun. The Junior Year went along quite quietly. Then came our Senior Year when we put on a good mystery play and a supper. We also sold magazines. Now we are waiting for June 22. Gene Swarthout wills his driving ability to Pick Ryan. V. and a Varsity team to field, the Eagles were shorthanded all season. Nevertheless, the teams put up some very good fights. Next year, with a large group of eighth grade boys moving up, we hope to have the man power we badly need. However, we are losing our graduating seniors: Carl Kruger, Larry Wightman and Duane Griswold. The Allentown Volunteer Fire Company was organized in 1942. It now consists of one hundred and twenty members, fifty of whom are on the Exempt Fireman’s list, that is to say, they have completed five con- secutive years of active, loyal service to their community. This Is an exceptional record for such a relatively new volunteer fire company. In 1950, the fire company was supplemented by the organization of the Allentown Ladies Auxiliary. They now have twenty-one active members and in three years have made remarkable progress. The Fire Company owns a two story fire hall which houses two modern fully-equipped fire trucks, plus the additional apparatus necessary for fighting oil fires, which is especially necessary in this area. Many of the firemen have taken instructions in modern fire fighting and first aid, and are well qualified for any emergency. The Allentown Volunteer Fire Company is ready and willing to serve its Community and outlying districts at all times. 41 Mrs. Bruce Thomas Vice Grand Mrs. Harold Glass Noble Grand Cedar Rebekah Lodge 594 was Instituted April 6, 1921.
