I Of T H £ CLASS Of 1951 (piew ui We present this, the 1950-51 year book published by the Allen- town High School to the public. Special thanks are due to the mem- bers of the Staff, who have coop- erated in the sincere desire to make it satisfactory in every re- pect. We extend our thanks to all who have advertised on our pages and to the Board of Education whose help has made possible this volume. s4C na ‘T tater Where the trail of Allegany Meets the eastern sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater Raising standards high.' Allentown, our Alma Mater, Fair be thy reknown; Many be thy sons und daughters Dear old Allentown The first frame school in Allentown was built in 1848. It was used for a school un- til 1886,and by the W.C.T.U. 3oc. until 1903 when it was used for the Primary Dept, until the completion of the brick building. At that time it was deeded to the trustees of the Methodist Church and wa3 used by the Women's Soc. of Christian Service until' this spring when it was sold to be used as a restaurant. AN EXCERPT FROM THE 1909-1910 YEARBOOK In writing the history of Allentown Union High School, the matter of data is very limited, and all historic items are scattered over intervals of time. Yet we have discovered that a man by the name of Emerson granted a High School site about the same place as today’s site, in 1840. Whereon was erected a log schoolhouse which answered the purpose for many years, when the new site including the old site was purchased of Marshall Phillips and title given, so long as used for public school, otherwise to revert to the Philips estate. Then a frame building was built 1848 to ’49 which served a term of years being the same building now used by the W.C.T.U. Society. Then came the larger frame building built in 1885-86 which stood the pressure of school affairs until 1903-04 when the beautiful brick building with its modern and up-te-date facilities was duly installed. DISTRICT-PROPERTY BUILT IN 1929 ‘DecUcatio The Year Book Staff gratefully dedicate the 1950-1951 ’’Derrick” to Coach Richardson, and Coach Miller. To theta we owe a debt of Gratitude for their excellent training and guidance in good sportsmanship, all of which was instrumental in attaining the many vic- tories in which we were a part, and last but not least the Basketball Team of this season for their ability which has made them so outstanding. We were bright-eyed with wonder and curiosity that first day. We were pretty big now that we had entered First Grade. Of the class that started here in First Grade twelve years ago only Frank, Ward, and Vyle remain. Vyle transferred to Friendship in the Third Grade but he joined us again in the Fourth Grade. Ward transferred to Franklinville in our Fresh- man Year but came back that same year. We received three class members from Wellsville. Athelene came in the sixth, Lester in the Eighth, and Durwood in the tenth. Our High School Days have been happy ones. They have been chocked full of activity and frivolity. In our Freshman Year the members went out for Band and Chorus. They continued to participate in sports, cheerleading, band, and chorus for the remainder of High School. In our Freshman Year and the three remaining years some class members participated in school plays. It was also in this grade that we began to think seriously of raising money for our Senior Trip. We had money raising parties to add to our treasury. During this year we began to go to dances. At the Senior Prom Athelene was crowned the Queen. In our Sophomore Class we continued to add to our class funds. Our class had diminished so that Athelene was our only girl member. In our Junior Year we sold pop at home basketball gemes (and also in our Senior Year) to add to our class funds. We also sold home-made roses to contribute to this fund. Then our Senior Year was here. We sold magazines, cards, and stationery. We had record dances, a Prom and Play(with the Juniors) to help bring up the slow rising treasury. During ttts year our boys became noted as the Whiz-Kids because of their spectacular playing of basketball to win the Class C County Championship. They had an undefeated season which was a record in our school. Frank Cady broke a record also. He made 46 points to break the record of 42 points made in a game in one night. As we come to the close of our Senior Year we wish the Junior Class as much enjoyment as we have had. We dread to leave now that the time has come but we will go on to our obligations trying to do our best in what our future holds for us. We depart with a grateful feeling to all those who have helped us in attaining this goal Our High School Graduation. CLASS PROPHECY ( 2000 A. D. ) As I look back (to 1950 A. D.) I never quite picture, what I want to see I think of our High School, and of our aim And then its all over, and I think of our gain. Cooter was our leader, really sumpin good Cooter was determined to be a cuttin wood I saw him yesterday, I swear he was a stranger For in his uniform, Cooter was a forest ranger Frank was the boy, who was so sweet We usually pictured Frank as an athlete But since he left High School, he learned to talk faster And now our Little Frankie , is a Sportbroadcaster. Lester left High School in his Senior Year For good Lester, we all shed a tear First he was a driver, of a terrible machine But now he’s Commanding General of the United States Marines Vyle was the comic, the funny one you see When Vyle was not at school, somewhere else he’d be We suspect he went a courtin’ upon the romance trail. But now we know where he is, Head Man at the Carnival. Athelene was the brain and the scholar of our Class Ambitious and skinny was this brown-eyed lass Fifty years she has been married It’s Mrs. Bundy to the last. Wardie is the one that was all the girl’s delight Nothin’ to see him have a different one each night Now he’s an electrical engineer And not a girl has he seen in many a year. Jerry was the one who was quite a star Jerry was the Big Boy ,who went quite far When he left High School, on a Pro Team he did play We all know Jerry now as Head Coach at UCLA. Barbara Leonard 'Barb Perseverance wins the crown. Robert Dean ’Jeep’ True friend forever a friend. Walter Stevens ’Walt’ Unruffled disposition. Donald Adams ’Don Happy go lucky, not a care in the world? Jean Jandrew 'Just Jean’ Faithful to duty, Loyal to ideas. uiDtBCLnssratn 'pTetAtiKUt cutd Pres. Gloria Deming, Vi: Trea3. We became the first Allentown team to win in their section and play at Alfred University. We set a record when we defeated Rushford for the section title. No other team had captured the section and still remain- ed unbeaten. We swept through the league, downing all we played. When the Eagles went down to defeat at Alfred we were good sports. Although going to Rochester was the big goal, we were satisfied with waht we ad done. Now we take a look at the players on this team. The players on this teqm. The scoring was well divided. Three men went over the 200 point mark. Frank Cady, guard led the scorers with 257 points for a 18.5 game average. Center, Jerry Glass was close behind with 248 points plus a 16.8 game average. The third highest scorer was Durwood Coats with 204 points for a 13 9 game average. These boys were set up by the two playmakers, Guild and Kruger, who in addition to their fine passing, came through with timely baskets when they wereneeded. They scored 86 and 73 points, respectively. The substitutes, Walter Stephens Donald Adams, and Bill Blue performed well when they par- ticipated in the games. We won our opening game against Belmont 42-35. Our next important event was the Richburg contest to determine first place. We won 43 to 40. Then came the game against Scio. We won the game by a score of 113-34. It established a new team scoring record and Frank Cady set a new county individual scoring record with 46 points. Before a capac- ity crow at Allentown we beat Richburg 56-48, and annexed the section 2 crown. Then before 1100 fans we defeated Rushford 56-53 and won the right to play at Alfred University. Then came our defeat, afterl4 straight wins Campbell beat us at Alfred. Another highlight of the season was the comical shooting of Cooter. His impossible shots kept every one on edge. One thing we have overlooked is the coach. If you had listened closely, you would have heard him chanting, Stay between your mand and the basket, and when you didn’t he wjmld become very aggravated. So we draw down the cur- tain on the 1950-1951 Basketball Season. The game was played with Campbell, the champions of Steuben County. LLENTOWN WINS ‘ALLEGANY COUNTY CLASS C CROWN Winsllth Bolivar, Continue Unbe GENESEE, N.
