COMUS if-BI Ernest Qsblep When the h ll 'ay xssue of the Canary went to press this year lt carried an article to lVlr Ernest Ashley to whom the staff paid trlbute for his fine work as Parks Commxssloner of Allentown And before that Issue was off the press the school was shocked to hear the sad news of Mr Ashley s sudden death We now agam pay trxbute to Mr Ashley not only as a member of our school board and commlssloner of our parks but as a true frlend of Allentown and Allentown people become known to all the town for hrs honesty falrness genxahty and good sense After hrs electron to the school board he became known for hrs fine sense of what was Ht and rlght and essentxal to the welfare of young people Then a llttle whxle ago people m Allentown made hlm Parks Commxssxoner Suddenly they saw new beauty spots wherever they drove ln or about the clty Not places of beauty plastered wxth slgns and advertlsements but beauty unspoiled enhanced by havlng all dlsordered and dlshgurmg growth of weeds and scrub removed made allurmg by paths and cleared vlstas along streams and under trees Mr Ashley not only developed places where people mxght enjoy coolness and beauty he provlded spots where chlldren might romp and run wxthout danger from motor trafflc Small wonder that people loved hlm They loved hlm for hls thoughtfulness they loved hxm for hrs great heart So It was wxth much sadness that the school sald lts last farewell to thus man among men who not only made his own monument rn natural beauty xn and about Allentown but also wxthout knowing xt built himself a place ln the hearts of all Allentomans Page Twenty four W' is c t 5 3 i Y.
