It was lwith this admirable spirit that Dr. Crawford, with the Facultyis co- operation, renewed the -memory of Timothy Alden and formulated a plan of keeping remembrance of him burning in the heart of the New Alle- glheny. On April 8, IQO8, a day in honor of our founder was formally estarbrlished, in a manner described thus -by The Campus of that date Z- VVhile a rhush of solemn quiet 'b-rooded over Old Allegheny and the bell on Bentley echoed its tolling summons over the valley, a slow funeral train moved across the campus drive, bearing 'between reverent lines of students, the mortal remains of Dr. Timothy Alden Hrst president found- er and guardian Oenrus of the early fortunes of Allegheny college and his wrfe Por many years the body of Dr Alden had been buried rn a small Presbyterian cemetery near Sharpsvrlle Pa far away from the scenes of hrs great work unhonored by the world almost forgotten The first rn- terest rn the day s event was created a year ago by Francis La Bounty in his commencement O13.t1011 The interest grew until rt culminated rn the above ceremony Qentrment like the lustrous pearl must have a certain nucleus a con- crete personalrty about which to form f or some reason the name of our founder has been allowed to lapse into neglect, almost into oblivion NVe shall do well rf we keep that name familiar to the rising generation of Allegheny s children and if in the lonO list of those who have helped to make this fair college some now gone from us others ahve and with us and at work for us we shall xx rite fl rmothy Alden s name as our founder our hero our seer lmmmmmllmu u um mr Ui lll l W 2 2 , . . b' V ' .
