Among the greatest achievements of President Crawford's quarter-cen- tury at Allegheny may be placed the raising of the Half Million Dollar Endowment Fund, April 21, 1912. It will al-ways remain as a tribute to the executive ability of the man in whose m.ind the idea of an increased endowment fund first took definite form, and to 'whom the credit for its successful culmination is due. Diuring the campaign President Crawford threw 'his inexhausti-ble sup-ply of energy into- the fight, and 'while others doubted and hesitated, he pressed on with the confidence that won out. T'o him it 'meant' endless travelling with no time for rest 3 days and nights o-f constant effort, never losing faith or diverting this eye for a minute from the goal. ' A The event 'marked the beginning of a N ew Allegheny , an Allegheny of renewed strength and widened range, an Allegheny in keeping with the ideal 'which the President ah-as ever set before him during this t-wen-ty- five years -of service. The addition of this fund raised the endowrment of the college to SI,O25,000, placing Allegheny fifteenth among American colleges in point of endowment, and opening to her a new era of ad- vancement. - In February, IQIO, the plan was first advanced by President Crawford when he asked permission of the Bo-ard of Trustees to take up -the matter of a gift from the General Educational Board. President Crawford him- self, sh.ortly after the completion of the campaign, told the story of its early stages as follows: About two years ago the Board o-f Trustees de- cided to enter upon a campaign for additional endowment for the college providing 'we could secure a substantial gift from- the General Educational Bioard. At the request of the Board of Trustees I had an interview with the secretary of t-hat Iboard, Mr. Buttrick, 'but I secured 'but little encour- agement, he saying that there were alreafdy forty-six colleges ahead of us. However, at a second .interview 'he promised to send a nran to look over the ground, and later 'he himself made the inspection.
