Uhr Gllnzing nf the lgrvp Svrhnnl T.he preparatorydepartment established by an announcement from the board of trustees in September o-f 1834 for 'many years followed the vicissitudes of the college's early struggles for existence, and shared in the sunshine of its prosperous season. The founding of this branch of Allegheny ,was coincident with the acceptance of the patronage of the Pittsburgh 'Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.. A varied career unfolded 'before the new school. For years the num-ber of Preps was over fifty percent of all students attendent upon Allegheny College. Prom 1870 to 1875 a period of gloom followed when had -the college been forced to recruit its students from those -whom it prepared the roll would have fbeenmscanty indeed. However, anxious hearts were once more to learn that the darkest ,hour is just 'before the dawn for in IQO5 was laid the cornerstone of Alden Academy. Henceforth the Academy prepared students for Allegheny from which it lead a distinct existence under the leadership of Prof. P. S. Breed. Thoroughness in thought and in execu- tion -of details, great and small, was everywhere employed. During this time, the time of great success, Alden was composed of five rooms, the Auditorium, Gymnasium, Laboratory, Society Room, and Recitation Room. The fate decreed for the Academy universally was no-t long spared Alden, however. 'Gradually as High Schools grew up the college prep school lost ground. In 19108 and IQOQ Alden ibecaeme a school for boys only, and by IQI2 the advisability of closing the Academy 'was quite ap- parent. Thus ended the Alden prep school, and thus the department of Chemistry found for the next few years a new home. 23
