Dr. CIZINXN ford was so full of energy that he vitalized the college when it was near to decadence and threw himself into IIS rejuvenation some- tnnes almost unaided It is most difficult to furnish enthusiasm when you must shoulder responsibilities alone. Dr Crawford s energy was never lacking and 'he never was ready to believe he had done en-ough I remem- ber the times of old wooden walks, a campus th.at never had seen a lawn mower, gas stoves until they were replaced 'by such coal -stoves as country stations iave. . I have never known Dr. Crawford to talk five minutes without saying something di-i rectly or indirectly laudaftory of Allegheny College, yet I have never heard him say one word that even hinted at a magnification of his own achievements. This is real greatness. C b I have never heard President Crawford say one word that even sav- ored of resentment toward his enemies, yet we all know he has had ene- mies. To all outward appearances, he has the power of retaining a kindly attitude toward those who oppose him.
