V ..j.i. . im 1.i.i..i.l : i -I '-I E S Q E what We Smih Ghent Bag 5 E s E E In the kind words and royal :welcome of this day I see much to en- E ',J.' courage an-d inspire, but I see also muc-h to humiliate. I fbovv in rever- 2 E ence at the thought of the heroic men vvhose feet have made holy the E E Walks and halls of yonder hill. The succession to vvhich you have called E E me is an honorable one. The command to enter the labours of these E 27 noblemen ovenvvhelms me. To be identified with the administration of a 2 E college is a grave responsibility. There is much increase of such responsi- E E bility when that college is one of proud ancestry and nofble history. It is E T with a sense of great unvvorthiness, Mr. Chairman, that I accept the keys g E and take into sacred keeping the charter which has been committed to my E E care. I can not hope to do what others have done, 'but I promise you all 2 2 that I can do for the institution that you love and cherish. 3 ,E Q The great thought of the co-llege is the making of a man. Not a one E E sided preacher with trained mind and untrained morals ibut a well rounded E E m-an. There is no -higher ideal than this. Wli.at is the making of fi sci- E 2 entist, or a mechanical engineer in comparison vvith. the 'making of a man. : E There are some even in this fast hurrying present of ours -who do put E E 'emphasis on manhood. The number is increasing of those who demand -I: E that he who stands at their bedside to .-prescribe for them in sickness shall 5 2 be .a man as well as a fphysiciang that he who pleads their cause at the -bar 5 E shall have character as well as legal information. All this is in 'harmony E 5 with col-lege idea. It is fb-rain and heart, trained and disciplined as a basis. E E Foundation in mental and moral character first. This is what Mr. Glad- lg 2 stone plead for in his Oxford Lectures of last year. He protested against E E utilitarian ideals 'which he saw getting a hold on the university teaching 1 : of -England, and .advocated a return to the old ideal of intellec-tual and E E moral fiber, as a beginningg after that, specialization. VVe ought n-ot to E E forget this: -that the great aim of the college is not to fit young men and E E women to get a living. It is to fit them to live. If they are fitted to live E .T the question of getting a living will be a comparatively easy oneg 'but if 3 E they are only fitted -to get a livin-g they will occupy a very narrow corner. E E It is the young 'man or Woman fitted to live who is in demand for the large E E place of honor and influence.
