During the 1983-1984 school year, the Student Council has sponsored Cos- tume Day. the Christmas Door Decorating Con- test. the Christmas Dance, and many school assemblies. The Student Council also sponsors an exchange student each year and the Student Council Citizenship Award. It provides many services for the students, including the school store, which serves as a convenience to the stu- dent body. Each year the Beta Club mem- bers attend the District Beta Club Con- vention in November and the State Beta Club Convention in March. The members spend a weekend in Raleigh, meeting and talking with Beta Members from every club in North Carolina. He has worked really hard to make the band better performers and better musicians. With the addition of new instruments, he has improved the sound; and with a new style of uniforms, new flags, and more elaborate shows, he improved the appearance. JROTC is designed to teach the cadets leadership patriotism, self-reliance, basic soldier skills, and good citizenship. The program is a four year curriculum. Successful completion of all four years will permit the college bound cadet to enter into the third year of Senior ROTC in college. Those cadets who choose to enlist in the Armed Forces will be enlisted in the grade of PVT E2. This will permit them to receive approximately $160.00 more per month than their contemporaries who have not had JROTC. Since JROTC program is in it s first year, only Leadership Development I has been offered in this school year. School year 84-85 will offer both Leadership Development I and II. Leadership III and IV will be phased in each succeeding year. The Alleghany High School Cadet Corps is 91 strong. Currently, there are 57 males and 34 females in the program. Since a large measure of flexibility is permitted. A.H.S. has attempted to incorporate adventure type training in its program. Thus far selected cadets have participated in an outward bound course which is designed to teach self-confidence and reliance by having the participants transverse various types of difficult obstacles.
