A SISTER A sister is someone to share with, and someone to have a good time with. A sister is someone to talk to. and someone to confide in. A sister is someone who loves, and someone you can love in return. But a person never realizes how much one really loves a sister, until it’s too late. Oftentimes one remembers the fights, the arguments, and the disagreements. Hut one often takes things for granted and fails to tell her how much you love and respect her. So. my friend, learn to talk things out with that sister. Cherish each day with that family member. Love and tenderly care for that special one. Tell her you love her while she’s alive. For someday she will be gone, and then it’s too late. by Tamara Perry Blevins Dorothy Jean Perry August 18, 1962 — October 1, 1979 Our minds are filled with sadness when we think of the few years Dorothy Perry was with us. Dorothy had a wealth of undeveloped talent and untapped potential. We cherish the good and happy times that all of us shared with her. The beauty' of her smile and the radiance of her personality have enriched the students and faculty at Alleghany High School. 37 A ORGANIZ TIONS Officers Linda Caudill, Vice-President; Tammy Blevins, Secretary; Paula Wagoner, Treasurer. On November 10, 1979, fifteen nervous girls, sponsored by mer- chants and individuals, participated in three competitions, lady’s choice, talent, and evening gown for the title of Miss Alleghany of 1980. The curtain rose to a Disco dance to the theme of the Wild, Wild West. Brant Burgiss the Master of Ceremonies, got the event underway by introducing each contestant, who exemplified her fa- vorite look. The talent was composed of Disco and baton routines, jazz dances, skits, and musicals. Allehany doggers accompanied by the 4-H Ramblers with a ballet by Margaret Smith were added attractions. Former Miss Alleghany, Cheryl Gambill, did a fire baton performance. The highlight of the night came with the evening gown competi- tion. Afterwards, the award of Miss Congeniality, voted by the con- testants, was given to Linda Caudill. After much delay due to the strong competition, the judges awarded the following honors: Best Non-Finalist Talent, Tammy Andrews; Third Runner-up, Susan Aldred; Second Runner-up, Diane Stoker; First Runner-up, Lori Edwards; Miss Alleghany, Tammy Gambill. The Pageant Committee was responsible for the theme, decorat- ing, and cleaning up the stage with a faithful few doing the work. The Playmakers worked closely with the program on lighting and music. Through the efforts of the Pageant Committee, the Playmak- ers, the Master of Ceremonies, and the contestants, a fast-paced, successful production was created for a large audience. Shaking a Foot? Roman is the seventeen year old son of Natalioand Austina Martinez, who originated from Spain. His father is a financial con- troller for Fabrica Nacional De Vidrio. He has two sisters, Maria and Ana Isabel, ages eleven and twelve. Roman, a graduate from Liceo Militar Monsenor Arias, plans to study computer science. After attending a high school of twelve hundred students, he enjoys our small high school. His favorite sport is tennis. His hobbies are playing chess, reading, and swim- ming. . . , . c Roman says the main difference in the two countries is the form ot life. The Americans are more care-free. In Caracas, it is difficult to make friends because of the large number of people. He doesn t enjoy the American food as much as that in Venezulea. Roman is staying with Jeff Parsons, a sophomore at Alleghany High School. During his visit, he has adjusted well and won the love ana respect of the student body. Thomas Leonard Absher Billv Thomas Alford Betty Anderson Wiles Sharon Lee Andrews Bonnie Darlene Bare Carol Dianne Bare Sandra Lynne Bedsaul In the fall of 1976, one hundred and sixty-one jitters girls and boys walked through the doors of Alleghany High School. It was a big step toward adulthood which involved adjustment to a new school . . . new class members . . . new faces . . . new decisions. Even though we were young and inexperienced, we became a part of the student body. Through the guidance of the class offic- ers, Tracy Moxley, Brant Burgiss, Myra Cox, and Tim Caudill, we accepted the challenge, met the job, and conquered it. Our class excelled in many fields. In the Miss Alleghany Contest, Sharon Henry became the first freshman to hold the title. Two first-year teams, volleyball and tennis, were Conference Champions, as well as the wrestling team. Not only did we excel in these two areas of beauty and sports, but we also made other outstanding achievements: Janet Hart and Logan McCall received the freshman physical education awards; Jo Ann Dickens and Sandra Bedsaul were representatives on the Homecoming Court; and Eight members of the class became Eagle Scouts. Even though it was our first year in high school, we freshmen had begun to adapt and to prove ourselves in many ways. The one hundred and fifty-six member sophomore class en- tered Alleghany High School with high spirits and enthusiasm, because this was the year that most of us would receive our license. However, the opening of school was saddened for us since a freak accident during the previous summer had taken one of our classmates, Danny Murray. Half way through our high school career, we became true members of Alleghany High School and were inducted into the honor clubs. The class officers were Tracy Moxley, Jo Ann Dickens, Mark Caudle and Janet Hart. Again, we proved ourselves capable of achievement in these areas: The Junior Varsity Football and Volleyball teams were Confer- ence Champions; Brant Burgiss was named N.C. representative for the Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation Leadership Seminar; The Homecoming representatives were Carol Bare and Jo Ann Dickens; and Susie Williams was the 1977 Snow Queen with Patricia Todd as Snow Princess. But we did not have to gain recognition by winning a certain title because the other sophomores were active in football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, golf, tennis, softball, track, cheerleading, and matmaids. One hundred and thirty-six juniors, realizing we were almost to the top, returned to a busy year . . . receiving the title of up- perclassmen . . . measuring for class rings . . . anticipating the Prom . . . taking the PSAT . . . working on the Miss Alleghany Pageant . . . striving for the title of Junior Marshal . . . being a member of the Trojan Staff. . . hoping to become a Senior. In November we lost another member of our class, Steve Fin- ney, who was the victim of a tragic accident. Our outstanding achievements this year included many ac- tivities: Jo Ann Dickens was selected as Homecoming Queen, the first underclassman to hold the title; In the Miss Alleghany Contest, the first runner-up was Carol Bare with Lorianne Edwards as the third runner-up; For the first time, the Junior-Senior Prom was held off-campus at the beautiful Gravstone Inn with a theme of Summer Nights ; We initiated the the governor s competency test; 127 Donna Renee Fanner Linda Irene Fender James Richard Finney Steven Talmadge Finney July-’62 — November-’78 Mark Caudle studied mathematics at the Governor’s School during the previous summer; Brant Burgiss, Janet Hart, and Mary Mitchell were exchange students to Belgium; The District Beta Club president was Brant Burgiss with Shir- ley Kennedy as secretary-treasurer; The carpentry, bricklaying, and electricity' classes completed a house which sold for considerable profit for our school; We elected Jo Ann Dickens, Steve Finney (replaced by Carol Bare), Peggy Reeves, and Barry BickerstafT as class officers; The cheerleaders were the first to become District finalists; and The softball team became Conference Champions. What a year for us — our BEST! The Alleghany High Senior Class with one hundred twenty- nine members became the envy of the school because of privi- leges . . . honors . . . superiority . . . independence . . . new responsibilities . . . leadership . . . Trojan Pride. Toward the middle of the year we began ordering graduation announcements, caps, gowns, and diplomas.
