As school life fades away, reflections become more prominent in the minds of each of us. What arc these reflections? Thoughts, Personalities, Emotions, and Lives blending together to make a school year which will remain as a treasure. vj HR 2 6 WM The class is on the grass. Frank the tank goes to the bank. Love is blue, and John gets two. And so ends another year, with many a laugh and tear. Cheers and applause gave our District VII AA Championship team a big send-off to the state tournament. Not everyone can be another Issac Newton, when he faces the problems of modem chemistry. ®l] (Trojan Allrjhang Hijh School Sparta, North (Carolina Dolume 3 14 '■I 11 I Administration and Faculty Graduates 1970 Underclassmen Organizations Sports 17 33 47 73 97 (Administration Sc faculty frequently thought of as merely instructors, ttjese skilled educators mold tl}t future of eacl] student’s destiny. 17 County Board of Education; Mr. Fletcher Spry. The Science Department strives to present the complex mysteries of our scientific world in the clearest picture for the students. This essential department pro- vides us with a foundation for the knowledge of the world around us. The Science Department instructors are Mrs. EUa Doughton. Mr. Ken Thomas, Mrs. Minnie Lou Irwin, and Mr. Charles Choate. 20 That complex world of numbers, equations, and symbols, is a course of study which touches every student at Alleghany High School. The Mathematics Department members are Mr. Bill Jarrett and Mr. Max Absher, experts at confusing the simple mind. Parabolas? Logarithms? Permutations? 21 In our modem world a girl must take her place with ease as a wife, mother, and future citizen. Such a girl must acquire social graces, understanding of children, and pride in herself and her country. This is the purpose of the Home Economics Department. Under the expert supervision of Mrs. Maybellinc Choate and Mrs. Sue Davis and the combined efforts of every girl taking home economics, these goals may be achieved. 22 Learning a trade, developing a skill, advancing with pride in your work, gaining a sense of accomplishment from a job well done-are all a part of our excellent Vocational Education Department. These men, Mr. Walter Lee Hampton, Mr. Joe Blake Hampton, Mr. Muncey T. Crouse, Mr. Jack I'elmet, and Mr. James Finney know every aspect of their respective skills and trades. 23 Those who cannot learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. These men, Mr. George Keith, Mr. Walter McMillan, Mr. Willard Moxley, and Mr. Cecil Shatley, provide us with a knowledge of the defeats and triumps of the past, and in doing so, help us to prepare for the future. 24 The Physical Education department, under the capable direction of Mrs. Ruth Andrews and Mr. Phil Bowers plays a fundamental role in preparing each student for the demanding physical world outside. A sound body is the foundation for a sound mind and a well rounded student. 25 A world of commerce awaits the business students who master their talents under the professional instruction of Miss Carol Kennedy. Mrs. Billie Daniel, and Mr. Melvin Miles. Typing, shorthand, office practice, bookkeeping . . . are fundamental to a good Business Department. 26 The ari of making oneself understood, at home and abroad, is made easier by Mrs. Pearl Reeves, our speech in- structor, and Mrs. Kathleen Maxwell, our instructor in foreign languages. Their tal- ents help to make each of us a more articulate citizen. Also Mr. Daniel Hale works dili- gently to complete a well- rounded program of Special Education. 27 The study of English is the study of communication. Writing, gram- mar. literature, and other facets of our language are demonstrated to all students by Mrs. Helen Woodie, Mrs. Sarah McMillan. Mrs. Ouida Willis, and Miss Linda Kdsel. 28 Instruction in the more practical fields of study comes under the direction of these men: Mr. Jimmy Maines, Mr. Edward Johnson, and Mr. Zane Woodic. These men strive in their own departments to prepare their students for the world awaiting them. 29 Appreciation of literature and music make each student’s life richer and more complete. Mr. Larry Carmichael instructs the Alleghany High School Band, but moreover, molds our talents into polished abilities. Mrs. Una Fdwards and Mrs. Vccic Yasinsac work to make our library an excellent place to discover new adventures and learn new facts in the written words and illustrations of books. 30 “Leave the driving to us” should be the motto of our Bus Drivers at Alleghany High School. These capable students have proved themselves to be responsible and hard-working in facing the task of transporting students to and from school each day. The efficient cafeteria personnel of Alleghany High School have done an excellent job in providing healthful and enjoyable meals for us. This important and hard-working staff should be given credit for making everyone’s school day more bearable. The classrooms and halls of our school are kept neat and presentable due to the untiring efforts of our Custodial Staff who “clean up” after us. Mrs. Effie Tucker and Mr. Frank Sapp labor continuously to make Alleghany High School a more pleasant place to study. 31 (Kraduates 1970 juniors, stepping into [ t future, yet remembering tIje past The Senior Class Officers have helped lo make this, their last year at Alleghany High School, a much more memorable one. Jr. 4? Betty Jo Whitaker James Nelson Wyatt Michael Gary Wyatt Roger Dale Wyatt John Walter Johnson February 24, 1952-September 13, 1969 Johnny Johnson’s modesty and unpre- tentious nature would prefer that he not be overly eulogized. Yet in this memorial those sterling qualities he so obviously possessed should be recognized. Johnny was a Christian and always exhibited those essential qualities of Chris- tianity, humility, thoughtfulness, considera- tion, and above all a forgiving spirit. These he abundantly evidenced in his personal relation- ship with both young and old alike. Johnny excluded no one from the warmth of his smile or captivating personality which inspired all who knew him. It is apropos to Johnny’s life to say the only superior person is the unselfish one who respects and serves others. “For everyone who promotes himself will be humbled but those who learn to be humble and compassionate will be lifted up.” The above picture dramatizes physically what Johnny has now spiritually attained- “His Mountain Top Experience with God,” who has lifted him up and claimed him for His own. Thus ends a brief memorial to the short but exemplary life of a beautifully charactered son, brother, classmate, and friend . .. John Walter Johnson. 44 In the minds of the graduating seniors of 1970 will remain many fond reflections of their final year at AHS. One of the highlights of this year was the visit of Maercio Sampaio, an exchange student from Brazil. His extended three-month stay benefltted all who became acquainted with him. 45 (3[or ttje Underclassmen, ttje future seems remote, but in reality, is fcery near. This year has been a very successful year for the Juniors. The Junior Class has been led by Shelia Blevins, Secretary; Ronald Edwards, Presi- dent; Kathy Upchurch, Treasurer; and Robbins Miller. Business Managers: Elizabeth Brooks Michael Johnson Cathy Joines Tri-Editors: Rex Mitchell Dean Nichols Joan Kennedy 74 1970 ®rojatt j taff 75 A vital service organization of Alleghany High School is the Student Council. Members are elected from each homeroom; the officers arc elected by the entire student body. This organization provides many valuable services to all students and teachers throughout the school year. 76 Outstanding academic achievements through- out their years at Alleghany High School make the J unior, Marshals one of the most honored groups in the student body. Their meritorious record proves them capable of being the scholars of tomorrow. From left to right, they arc Nancy VanHoy, Chief, Jaylenc Halsey, Diane Bryan. Judy Shaw, Johnny Irwin. Nancy Benjamin, Robbins Miller. 77 Playing an active part in the affairs of a nation-wide organization is the Alleghany High School chapter of the Distributive Education Gubs of America. Students involved in this program learn more about the complex business world of which they hope to become an integral part later in life. Merchandising, Economics, Business Management, arc but a few of the various fields explored by this growing organization. 78 One of the most active and productive programs in the Vocational Educational Department of our school is the Alleghany High Chapter of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. The many different skills Earned through participation in this organization arc displayed in the work of the individual members and the club as a whole. L 79 The future business men and women of tomorrow may be found among the members of the Future Business Leaders of America. In this, the club’s first year, the student parti- cipation has been extremely good. 80 The stydcnts of Alleghany High School who wish to embark upon a career in teaching have formed the Future Teachers of America Gub. This club enables the members to observe the responsibilities and requirements of this profession through assisting the teachers. 81 The happiness and well-being of the family arc the chief concerns of the Future Homemakers of America. This club centers around classes of Home Economics offered to every girl in the student body. Much valuable insight into the problems of homcmaking is gained through participation in this organization. 82 One of the largest organizations in the student body is the l-uture f armers of America. Every aspect of an agriculturaf vocation is included in this club’s curri- culum. A new building and much newly purchased equipment have greatly ex- panded the horizons of the F.F.A. 83 Members of the Health Careers Club busy themselves preparing for a career of serving their fellow man. Much interest is displayed in a future in the field of health by these students. 84 Two of the newer clubs created a! Alleghany High School are the Library Club and the Audio-Visual Club. The Audio-Visual Club, under the direction of Mr. George Keith, aids teachers in the preparation and upkeep of pro- jectors. record players, and other special materials used in the teaching pro- cesses of today. The Library Club provides an invaluable aid to Mrs. Ldwards and Mrs. Yasinsac and to the entire student body by helping to maintain the proper facilities and atmosphere in the library. 85 High standards and rigid qualification requirements make the Beta Gub of Alleghany High School one of the more exclusive and outstand- ing organizations in the student body. Many important functions are carried out by the Beta Gub, such as the operation of our school store and representing our school at Beta Conventions and other school- oriented activities. 86 One way in which interested students may advance their knowledge through their own participation is by joining the Dramatics Club. The members of this club find both entertainment and mental stimulation in their programs and productions. 87 88 The Alleghany High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Larry Carmichael, has been instrumental in the development of the talents displayed by its members. Many long hours of practice are necessary for each band member to attain the level of quality essential to top-quality performers. 89 A superb talent is exhibited by the members of the Alleghany High School Chorus. This group participates in many activities throughout the school year under the di- rection of Mr. Hdward Johnson. 90 The staff of the Free Press? .. . Maybe someday. A lot of uninhibited thoughts and vivid imagi- nations go into the making of a newspaper. The Journalism Club attracts some of the unique indi- viduals of our school. 91 locusing their talents on the activities of the school sports, socials, academics, the Photography Club has made great strides in this, their initial year. 92 To promote interest in inter-scholastic debate, oratory, and public speaking is the primary purpose of the Debate Club. Each member must display an interest in speech and a willingness to work. The Men’s A Gub of Alleghany High School is an honor organization whose members have displayed leadership and abilities in some form of athletics. Pride, courage, stamina, personal sacrifice- all of these things are a part of every A Gub member. 94 The school spirit is really exemplified by the overwhelming enthusiasm of the Pep Club. All our athletic teams are loyally supported at the home games. The cheerleaders welcome all the aid given them by the energetic members of this club. 95 j ports (Outstanding leadership and facilities ljatie combined to produce an unequaled athletic program JRiss ®rojan 98 Miss Joan Kennedy JHomecomtng (Attendants Glerida Sexton, Senior Cathy Church Robin Jones, Juniors Diane Atwood Gaye Caudill, Sophomores Paula Cox Joyce Musgrovc, Freshmen ®ur (E I] eer leaders re ®fye Heart ®f j cfyool Spirit Glenda Sexton Trcva Williams Sandra Poole Shelia Blevins 100 Charlotte Hardin Cathy Church 101 L to R; Claudia Busic.
