The yd? of 6!6L!0C N THE CLo1sTER of the church of the Virgen de la Asuncion de Malacatepec in Milpa Alta, Mexico, a stone idol has stood on its pedestal for year-s. At its base, flowers bloom. In the cloister patio is a well, one of the sources of Water 'supply for an arid village. The idol presumably is Tlaloc, the Rain-God -but the villagers or parish priest will give only noncommittal answers. It has always been there? Quien sabe que sera? is perhaps the most common reply given to an inquisitive traveler. But the flowers surrounding the idol tell the story of a watchful tenderness which deceives the persistent assertion of ignorance. No flowers are planted in the other three corners of the cloister. 4' 22 Y
