7 . -« .. . r : -awm S V y Sfc -. jtf A- __ CLASS HISTORY In August of 1981, we, Owen Gardner, Shiela Gardner, Catherine Hafford, Christine Hafford, Kay Hafford, Jennifer Harvey, Julie Jackson, Mary Kelley, Cheryl Kelly, Frank McBreairty, Karen McBreairty, Lana McBreairty, Ruth McBreairty, Carola O’Leary, Lana Pelletier, Owen Pelletier, Todd Pelletier, and Kurt Smith started our freshman year of high school. This year required a big adjustment for us. We were finally growing up and had to deal with the changes — each in our own way. Frank McBreairty and Jennifer Harvey left during March and April of this year. By our Sophomore year we had begun planning our yearbook. Working hard to raise money, we shared many experiences that will be remembered and cherished for years to come. During this yearJulie Jackson and Kurt Smith left. With the arrival of our junior year came more excitement. We sold tickets, calendars, and put on dances to raise money. Ruth McBreairty left during the first quarter of this year. As we started our senior year those who remained were: Owen Gardner, Shiela Gardner, Catherine Hafford, Christine Haf- ford, Kay Hafford, Cheryl Kelly, Karen McBreairty, Lana McBreairty, Lana Pelletier, Owen Pelletier and Todd Pelletier. This year brought many responsibilities. We knew the end of our school days were drawing near and we had to be prepared. We all pulled together and did our share and are proud to say that we accomplished what we had dreamed of since grammar school. As we leave Allagash High School, we take with us the many memories of our school days, that will never be forgotten. 2 Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1985, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to Patricia Pelletier. Being the first class she taught, we feel that while we were learning from her, she was learning from us. She is a dedicated professional who always seemed to have time for our problems. If you were feeling down, she could always cheer you up and make you feel better about yourself. And gladly would she teach, and gladly learn. 3 Secretary Linda McBreairty Principal A1 Feero PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE During the two years prior to this school year 1 had daily contact with some of you in classes. I noted in many of you a willingness to learn and a desire to try new things. I also noted that there was a high percentage of students in the Class of 85 who participated in many school activities. During this school year it became apparent to me that the Class of 85 was responsible for organizing, directing and contributing to the success of many school activities. The Class of 85 has demonstrated that it possesses very desirable personal traits in school spirit, dedication, concern for others less fortunate and unselfish participation in activities for the benefit of other students. Life is not unlike the Allagash River in that both have many branches. You all have the resourcefulness to successfully travel any branch you choose and 1 expect you will do it successfully. Good luck, be proud of Allagash, and make Allagash proud of you! 4 If you don't have a goal, there's nothing to shoot for. Owen Gardner Jr. Basketball 8th, 1, 2, 3, 4 Yearbook Staff 4 7 8 — Kahlil Gibran Shield Gardner Student Council 2, 3,4 Basketball 8th, 1, 2, 3, 4 Yearbook Staff 4 Library Staff 4 In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds it’s morning and is refreshed.” 9 10 Catherine Hafford One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonged to him and the other to the LORD. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. LORD, you said that once if I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me. The LORD replied, My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you. ” 11 12 Christine Hafford Yearbook Staff 3, 4 A ROSE I would rather have a little rose From a Garden of a friend Than flowers strewn around my casket When my day on earth must end. I would rather have a loving smile From one I know is true Than tears shed around my casket When my world is through. Bring me all the flowers today Whether they're pink, white or red I would rather have one blossom now Than truckloads when I'm dead. 14 Kaye Hafford President 4 Vice-President 3 Yearbook Staff 3, 4 Library Staff 4 Basketball 8th, 1, 2, 3, 4 A Prayer for Today This is the beginning of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it... or use it for good, but what 1 do today is important, because I am exchanging a day of my life for it! When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something I have traded for it. 1 want it to be gain, and not loss; good, and not evil; success, and not failure; in order that I shall not regret the price I have paid for it. — Author Unknown 15 16 Cheryl Kelly 19 o CM Lana McBreairty Treasurer 4 Secretary 3, 4 Yearbook Staff 4 THINK AS I THINK Think as I think, said a man, Or you are abominably wicked; you are a toad. And after I had thought of it, I said, I will, then, be a toad. — Stephen Crane 21 22 Lana Pelletier President 1, 2 Student Council 2, 3,4 Yearbook Staff 4 Library Staff 4 Manager 4 Basketball 1, 2, 3 To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occa- sions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual unbidden and un- conscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my sym- phony.” — William Henry Channing 23 Owen Pelletier Treasurer 3 Basketball 8th, 1, 2, 3, 4 Yearbook Staff 4 LESSON They said you'll never make it, And they thought that they were right But 1 kept on plodding onward. Because I hoped I might. And they shook their heads in wonder That I lacked the sense to quit But I held my chin up higher, And I didn't mind a bit. They said, you'll never make it, As the problems multiplied But I had to make an effort And to know at least I tried. So I dug my heels in deeper, Though sometimes my spirits lagged And I shouldered what was lightest. And the rest I sort of dragged. And I found to my amazement At the ending of the day That what they said 1 couldn't, 1 had managed anyway. It only took three little words, Teacher, help me, and I rid Myself of doubt and all they said I'd never do . . . but did. — Author Unknown Todd Pelletier Standing: Kaye Hafford — President, Charles Saunders — Advisor, Shiela Gardner — Student Council Representative, Cheryl Kelly — Vice-President. We can name many great ones whose fame shall endure as long as man remains on this planet, for their lives have contributed much to the benefit of their fellowmen. There are others whose footprints are there but have left only a dark pattern on the memory of mankind by an influence that was not a benefit but a blight. We can 'I all be great and famous, but all of us can use what time and talents we have in the best way we can to help others and make them happy. This is to leave shining footprints for someone to follow. — Esther York Burkholder Louie Pelletier Matthew Jackson Troy Gardner 55 This trophy cast was made and donated hy Ijouie, Troy, and Matthew. I should not be withheld but that some day Into their vastness I should steal away, Fearless of ever finding open land, Or highway where the slow wheel pours the sand. I do not see why I should e’er turn back, Or those should not set forth upon my track To overtake me, who should miss me here And long to know if still I held them dear. They would not find me changed from him they knew — Only more sure of all I thought was true. 78 IN LOVING MEMORY OF DUNCAN KENNETH McBREAlRTY 4 27 29 — 11 24 84 A book cannot teach wisdom Humor is not a smile Work means not dedication Nor will talk be all worth while. But yet his wisdom his smile his dedication and words of love will be treasured in many hearts forever. Fortunate are those who knew him And wise to live his way He left a mark of inspiration For us to live by day to day. He believed in dedication And proved to everyone What an eager mind accomplishes By what he’d said and done. A friend to all and foe to few So devoted to the Riverview A clever mind and helping hand A faithful, true and honest man. As time goes on we cherish the strength, courage, honor, and memory of a special friend. By nieces Susie and Sheila Pelletier IN MEMORY OF LOUISE GARDNER 8 12 20 — 1 10 84 WHAT A FRIEND What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer! Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged, Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness, Take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge, Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer; In His arms He’ll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there. IN LOVING MEMORY OF THOMAS PELLETIER 7 31 09 — 12 28 81 LOVING MEMORIES Your gentle face and patient smile With sadness we recall You had a kindly word for each And died beloved by all. The voice is mute and stilled the heart That loved us well and true, Ah, bitter was the trial to part From one so good as you. You are not forgotten loved one Nor will you ever be, As long as life and memory last We will remember thee. We miss you now, our hearts are sore, As time goes by we miss you more, Your loving smile, your gentle face, No one can fill your vacant place.
