Text from Pages 1 - 100 of the 1969 volume:

We, the Yearbook Staff, do proudly present our 1969 edition of the Highlander; it has been ours for a year and now it is yours. We hope it gives you as much pleasure as it has given us while making it. Here we fake pride in our school and whaf if has done for us in fhe pasf. It is a cornerstone of our culture and a foundation for our success. Here we have re- ceived preparation, guidance, and inspiration for the day we assume the role as citizen. Our school is a part of our legacy of freedom, and may it ever remain ‘dedication We, the Senior class of 1969, do proudly dedicate this issue of the Highlander to Mr. Malmborg and Mr. Dunham who taught us the value of friendship and the need for understanding. Under their guidance we shall pave our paths in the future always toward greater achievements and long-awaited successes. Shelia Beth Hafford Loving Memories This has mute and stilled the heart That loved us well and true Oh, bitter was the trail to part From one so good as you. You are not forgotten, loved one Nor will you ever be. As long as life and memory last We will remember thee. We miss you now, our hearts are sore As time goes by, we miss you more Your loving smile, your gentle face No one can fill your vacant place. The day has come that we must go ... to search for bigger and better footholds beyond the next horizon. But there is no such thing as saying good-bye to the place of childhood memories; you can always come back to it. So we pause to reflect back upon the past. We will forever hold fond memories of our town; we are proud to have been part of it! Jarewed J- rincipal75 ifJfjeA cifye Class of 1969, I am speaking to both of you. Pay strict attention, because my audience is small. Neither of you can become lost among the members of your class, hoping to go unnoticed. The achievement of this class must of necessity be your own personal achievements and satisfies compiled for this class will be nothing more or less than your own personal records. Whenever the class of '69 is recalled, all thought will turn to you and when it is judged, you will have to answer. Having the entire responsibility of your class upon your shoulders is a great burden. There is no way you can cast it aside or bear it lightly. Moreover, you do not bear this burden for yourselves alone. You bear it for your parents, your community, your teachers and for Allagash High School. 9 MR. ROBERT PLAISTED English I. The .parents were very proud of their children and hoped that they would glean much knowledge from their new halls of learning. During the second year of their stay at Allagash High School these four students were joined by a newcomer from a distant town. This newcomer was Mary O'Leary. The second year was especially eventful for the class of '69 for, along with gaining one new student, two were lost. Donna Walker moved to a large city in Massachusetts to seek her fortune. Daphne Kelly fell in love with her Prince Charming and became a housewife. Thus there were three members of the class of '69 working toward their goal of gradu- ation. During their last year Mary O'Leary traveled to a distant town to enter a larger school. This left one girl and one boy, both quite grown now, to complete the program of Allagash High School and to graduate in June of 1969. This girl and this boy were Cynthia Harvey and Wayne McBrearity. 17 SITTING, Left to Right: Cathie Pelletier, Melody McBreairty, Lena Kelly, Donna Hafford, Veronica Walker, Gail McBreairty. The season is now over for Wayne McBreairty and his team mates and. although Allagash managed only a 4-8 mark against Maine Class M and S competition, they fared a bit better against some New Bruns- wick foes, falling short, of course, of a Class S tourney berth. Allagash played five teams other than their regular varsity schedule in the state, and in the total of 17 games, Wayne McBreairty poured in 558 points, for an average of a hit over 32 points per game. In case you’re wondering about Wayne's ability to compete against good competition, listen to how he did against the eventual eastern Maine Class S champion. Against the Island Falls Elks, Wayne fired in 66 points in two appearances, and, although his club dropped both games he left the Elks with a healthy re- spect for his basketball abilities. Wayne is hard to handle, says Coach Gilpatrick, referring of course to the opposition's attempts to stop Wayne from scoring. He has been a defensive headache for the opposition during his last three seasons in an Allagash uni- form. During these three years, he poured in a total of 1095 points an average of 365 per season. In his final three appearances for Allagash he had scoring nights of 58, 35 and 29 points a total of 122 and a 40- points-plus average. All the good ones don't appear in the tournament as coach Gilpatrick says. And Wayne McBreairty certainly rates as one of the best. 49 . This company does not own land, but was established to represent many individual own- ers and trusts. The owners we represent do not have any mills; they simply sell standing timber to log- ging organizations. Access roads are built, and mature trees are harvested under close super- vision of Company personnel. Under our progressive multiple use management concert, a major portion of the private logging roads not in current use as such, are available to sportsmen as access to the lakes and forests of Northern Maine. Because these roads are built and maintained for the primary purpose of logging, if is necessary to supervise and direct non-logging traffic in a way which will avoid interference with these wood harvesting activities. For this reason, you will find manned gates at stra- tegic locations leading to the lands under our management, and a fee will be charged. The gate attendant will also assist you with any information you may require in regard to the area you plan to visit. Seven Islands Land Company, and the land owners we represent, believe in selective cutting and sustained yield management as the best possible method of attaining the highest long range multiple use of these lands. This means that, by partial cutting of mature trees, and leaving young, vigorous trees to grow, we are maintaining a healthy forest. In our o- pinion, maintaining an adequate forest accomplishes many things other than just growing frees as a raw material: by protesting the water table, it sustains and regulates the flow of rivers testing the water table, it sustains for game fish, plus better canoeing; it provides more feed and better cover for game animals and birds; it helps retain the natural scenic beauty of the North country. Under multiple use planning, we also offer private camp site leases in certain sections. For information on leasing, or other matters of interest, please inquire at our Bangor office. 52 J.D.
