On an early morning in June of 1957, the citizens of Dickey were awakened by the noise of heavy trucks moving machinery to the head of the Big Rapids on the Saint John River, followed by a crew of surveyers and drillers. Reports stated that this was the starting of locating a place on the Saint John River where a hydro-electric dam could be constructed. The citizens wondered if the dam, talked about more than sixty years ago, would actually be built, Soon, however, the project was cast aside. In June of 1963, another move was made and drilling and surveyors was resumed, but at a different location. The site of the old ferry landing in Dickey was proven to be the ideal spot. In 1965, the bill for the Dickey Dam went to Congress and a hard battle resulted. Finally the project became a reality. President Johnson signed the bill at his Ranch in Texas in October of 1965, approving the 227 million dollar project at Dickey. Dickey made headlines and became the top conversation piece far and wide. Now, only fond memories will remain . . . memories of the myriads of Fir, Spruce, and Pine, of the lapping waters of the Saint John River in summertime, and the excitement of spring ice-breaking time. Our favor- ite places will have vanished and our school corridors will greet new faces. Gone will be that peace and quietness that we knew back in that morning of 1957. We were all happy to welcome Senator Margret Chase Smith to our school, and enjoyed hearing her speech on the stage of our gymnasium. Senator Smith said that she wished to thank the residents of Allagash for their efforts in support of the Dickey Dam. She also spoke on the future of Allagash, and said she wished to see the young people of our town in- terested in the project for it would be they who w’ould develop the future of the Allagash Area. Senator Smith, who arrived in a caravan of about 30 cars, was intro- duced to our community's oldest resident and was presented with a bou- quet of red roses. Upon leaving the school, the caravan proceeded to the Dickey Dam Site near the Saint John River Bridge. There Senator Smith expressed her sensitiveness to the beauty of the Allagash Area, and said that she has been planning for many years to make the Allagash River canoe trip, and will do so when Congressional sessions do not prevent her from doing so. 16
