WE, THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1966, PROUDLY DEDICATE THIS YEAR'S EDITION OF THE HIGH- LANDER TO THE ENTIRE FACULTY OF ALL AG ASH HIGH SCHOOL, WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THEIR GUIDANCE, UNDERSTANDING AND INTEREST WHICH THEY HAVE GIVEN US DURING OUR YEARS IN HIGH SCHOOL. 2 ADMINISTRA TION Principal, Garfield C. King As your teacher, principal, and friend, we have reasoned together for the past six years. Certainly if I have anything of worth to offer you, you have already received it. I find myself in the position of the man who, having said all that he had to say, sat down and penned a postscript. P.S. Your parents, teachers, and friends are proud of you. There hopes and prayers go with you. Your future awaits you. Your responsibility confronts you. Now, with joy and more than a little nostalgia, while trusting always that history will bear evidence that we have done our work well, we present you to the future. We completed our Freshman year and began our Sophomore year with the same group of students. During our Junior year, Clayton Jackson moved to Conn, to live with relatives and Calvin Hafford left us to serve with the U. S. Army. However, we gained a student that year also. Elwood McBreairty joined our class after he rejoined our high school. That year complete, we began our Senior year minus another student, Jan Soucy, who moved to Conn, with his parents. So here we find ourselves with only five students in our Senior Class: Nancy Hender- son, Myrna Clark, Lester Walker, Dale O'Leary, and Elwood McBreairty. Nevertheless, each of the five Seniors eagerly anticipate graduation day -- the day that the doors of Allagash High School will close behind us forever. We will leave it with gratefulness for what it has done for us, for the preparation it has given us so that we may be better equipped to face the world on our own. We also express thanks to our teachers who have given us guidance throughout grammar school. To the Faculty and the undergraduates, we leave our best wishes for success at Allagash High School. 9 Senior Class Officers: (SITTING) Lester Walker, Vice-President, Dale O'Leary, Presi- dent. Reports stated that this was the starting of locating a place on the Saint John River where a hydro-electric dam could be constructed. The citizens wondered if the dam, talked about more than sixty years ago, would actually be built, Soon, however, the project was cast aside. In June of 1963, another move was made and drilling and surveyors was resumed, but at a different location. The site of the old ferry landing in Dickey was proven to be the ideal spot. In 1965, the bill for the Dickey Dam went to Congress and a hard battle resulted. Finally the project became a reality. President Johnson signed the bill at his Ranch in Texas in October of 1965, approving the 227 million dollar project at Dickey. Dickey made headlines and became the top conversation piece far and wide. Now, only fond memories will remain . . . memories of the myriads of Fir, Spruce, and Pine, of the lapping waters of the Saint John River in summertime, and the excitement of spring ice-breaking time. Our favor- ite places will have vanished and our school corridors will greet new faces. Gone will be that peace and quietness that we knew back in that morning of 1957. We were all happy to welcome Senator Margret Chase Smith to our school, and enjoyed hearing her speech on the stage of our gymnasium. Senator Smith said that she wished to thank the residents of Allagash for their efforts in support of the Dickey Dam. She also spoke on the future of Allagash, and said she wished to see the young people of our town in- terested in the project for it would be they who w’ould develop the future of the Allagash Area. Senator Smith, who arrived in a caravan of about 30 cars, was intro- duced to our community's oldest resident and was presented with a bou- quet of red roses. Upon leaving the school, the caravan proceeded to the Dickey Dam Site near the Saint John River Bridge. There Senator Smith expressed her sensitiveness to the beauty of the Allagash Area, and said that she has been planning for many years to make the Allagash River canoe trip, and will do so when Congressional sessions do not prevent her from doing so. 16 Office Staff: Janice Kelly, Myrtle Kelly, Elwood McBreairty, Kathy Kelly, Dale O'Leary, Myrna Clark, Nancy Henderson, Mr. King.
