Superintendent of Schools tg mont Wanta WML lflztfiout ou The chief executive officer of this group is the friend of all the students-Mr. Bettinger, the Superintendent of Schools. Besides his school worries his outside activities really keep him hopping-serving as chairman of Community Service for the Ration Board and a director of Red Cross for Alhambra. His very able assistant, Mr. Stokesbary, is always as busy as Mr. Bettinger himself. Two of his most important activities are head of the Alhambra Red Cross and Director of Curriculum for the schools. I251

BOARD OF EDUCATION: Mrs. Frances Burton, Mrs. Mary A. Cornelius, Mr. George L. Yelland, Mrs. Elsa Pattison lSec.l, Mr. R. Leslie Sparks lPres.l, Mr. George E. Bettinger, Mr. Aubry Miller, Dr. Samuel Broadwell, Mr. Maurice Stokesbary. e ust QQ lgifant Of the million and one headaches of the Board ot Education, we at Alhambra High School are twenty-two hundred of their larger pains. Like the director of a play who sits back stage and never gets any glory, the members of the Board work hard to make our school year the best possible for us, but they get very little credit. Holding semi-monthly meetings, passing upon the budget items, being respon- sible for the raising of funds to properly operate the schools, determining the policies under which the schools in the district shall be operated, electing teachers recommended by the superintendent of schools, passing upon petitions from citizens, providing facilities-all these are just a few of the matters which must be considered by the Board of Education. lI24J

E261 no ,Q Miss Mildred Crosswhite, Girls' Vice-Principalg Mr, A, Ewing Konold, Boys' Vice Principalg Mr. Norman B. Scharer, Principal. - ecwe Us ace gt It was Marching Along Together that Mr. Scharer made his theme this yearf The fine teamwork among the vice-principals, faculty, and students was brought about by Mr. Scharer's effortsg we think he has done an excellent job. He can rightly say, Alhambra has reached and maintained its high scholastic rating because of cooperation among its well- trained faculty. Keeping our girls in tow was the big job capable and popular Mrs. Crosswhite took over this semester. Already she has been commended on her fine work. Aside from her regular duties, Mrs. Crosswhite is faculty adviser to the Girls' League. Mr. Konold is the boys' special property, but many girls have a claim on him too. As added duties he is faculty adviser to the Boys' Federation, coordinator of our large club pro- gram, and faculty adviser to the commission. A.H.S. was proud when Mr. Konold received the National Distinguished Service Award as Man of the Year.
