1 acwc .9nfernafiona!.jQ6ghway On March 15, 'I930, a brave advance force, sponsored by the Automobile Club of Southern California, started its expedition to explore the treacherous track that is now being smoothed out into a highway. These men took their automobile over mere oxen trails and traveled the small mountain roads in spite of slips and slides. The idea is a by-product of the Pan-American Union, proposed by Iames G. Blaine when Secretary of State in 1881. The highway will stretch about a total of 14,000 miles, but of this only about 10,000 miles will be open all the year around, Extending from Fairbanks, Alaska, to Buenos Aires, Argentina, it will be by far the most spectacular project of its kind ever attempted by man. 9
