Chia! Engineer . . rincipaf Wy. Schafer Mr. Norman Scharer, the Principal of Alhambra High School, is truly a man from the far frozen North, for he was born in one of the coldest sections of our country-in Michigan. He was thawed out, however, into his present warm, congenial state when he came to live in California. About four years ago Mr, Scharer detoured and took a trip to South America. He was impressed with the similarity of Peru to the California of a hundred years ago. The likeness was along these lines: climate, topography, people, government, church, natural resources, possibilities, and transportation, Mr. Scharer came to California to attend Pasadena College, where he graduated. A year was spent at the University of Michigan in graduate study. Returning to California, he received his Master of Arts degree from the Uni- versity of Southern California. Among Mr. Scharer's records of miles successfully covered along life's highway are: six years of teaching, two at Ramona Elementary school, four years at Alhambra High, and five years as an administrator in the Alhambra schools. His children are Barbara, thirteen, and Ion, six. It is to the school's advantage that its principal believes firmly in student- body government. Mr. Scharer feels that the past school year has been an extremely suc- cessful one. To paint a verbal portrait of Mr. Schafer: he is often serious, yet he is not above filling in his conversation with some current informal expression. He resembles Norsemen of Viking days-strong, well built, clean and clear cut. Mr. Scharer comments thus on the 1941 NALHAMBRANH theme: Tolerance, the great American characteristic that is lacking today in many parts of the world is a trait for which the Alhambra High School Student Body is noted. Thus it is quite fitting that the staff should select the Pacific International Highway as the theme for this excellent yearbook. This great highway will do much to promote tolerance in the western hemisphere, creating a group of nations that will cooperate even as students in our high school. cc- .gt f' -X Q H' 3 I 7.
