Similarly, the successful fulfillment of the policies of our composite system of school adminis- tration is due to the cooperative effort of the entire school district brought about by the Board of Education. In the plans for the highway, the United States figures prominently bel cause it is the largest country. Likewise, of the twelve public schools in Al- hambra, Alhambra High School is the largest and often requires the most time and thought of the Board of Education that guides it. The school board is in the nature of a legislative body. Its members are elected by the people for a term of four years: they serve without salary. Mrs. H. C. Baldwin, president of the school board, and Mr. Leslie Sparks, a mem- ber, have each served six years. Mr. Samuel Broadwell, vice-president, Mr. Aubry Miller, and Mrs. Hazel Postle have each served three, two, and one years respectively. rince eorge Along the Pacific Highway in British Columbia, there is an important city named Prince George, There is a very important Prince George along Alham- bra High School's highway, too. While this congenial fellow may be more ex- tensively known as Mr. George Bet- tinger, Superintendent of Alhambra schools, there can be no doubt about the fitness of his title, for IVIr. Bettinger is a prince of a fellow. He is known and respected by all for his kindliness, consideration, and friend, liness. Mr. Bettinger is an especial fa- vorite with students because of his easy smile and youthful, wholly likeable per- sonality. Our Prince George is a native Cali- fornian, his college alma mater is thc University of Southern California. Most of Mr. Bettinger's work has been in the executive branches of schools. He has served as superintendent of schools for seven years. With regard to the 1941 HALHAMBRANH theme and its value, Mr. Bettinger makes the following comment: Your theme, 'The Pacific International Highway' is particularly apropos at this time since events in Europe and Asia are forcing us to become better acquainted with the peoples of the Americas. The future of America is in the Americas. ' 11
