NV, SULLIVAN JONATHAN W1NKElL Board of Education In featuring the Board of Education we thought it very fitting to include Johna- than Winkel, president of the first Board of Education of the Ind. School District of Algona organized in 1876. Mr. Winkel is the only member of that board, now a citizen of Algona. At pre- sent writing he is in California where .he went to spend the winter' for his health. Mr. J. W. Sullivan was born and raised in Johnson County under the shadows of the State University, where he graduated from the Law Department in 1887. After graduation, he went to Sioux Falls, Sl. Dlak., where he began the practice of law, but not being satisfied with S. Dak., he returned to Iowa and settled at Algona in 1890, opening up a law office. He was elected to the school board in 1900 and has served continually ever since. In the spring of 1904 he was elected president of the school board to, succeed Mr. E. B. Butler, wlhich position he still holds. Mr. Sullivan has always manifested a deep interest in our public schools and has willingly given his time and thought in seeing that the schools maintain their effici- ency and are run on an economical basis. He has one son wlho graduated from the high school in 1922, and is now attend- ing Notre Dame. The patrons and community are to be congratulated on having so busy a man willing to devote a part of his time and energy in serving their common interests. Mr. T. P. Harrington, second in years of service on the board was born in Wis- consin. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1882, settling near Clarion in Wright County. After attending the rural schools and Clarion thigh school, he entered the State University graduating from the Law Department in 1899. Immediately after graduation he came to .Algona and began the practice of law. Mr. Harrington has always been public spirited and vitally interested in every- thing that enhances Algona and its citizens. f 1 14 if J, HLGD mulN ,- At all times he has been deeply interested in educational problems, and has given unstintingly of his time and energy in trying to make the school of the greatest service to the public. He :has three children in school - two in the grades, and one as junior in the high school. Dr. E. C. Hartman was born in Illinois, and reared in Wisconsin. After finishing the public schools. he attended Northwestern University where he Hnished the Liberal Arts and medical course in 1907. After two years as interne, he came to Algona and began the practice of medicine. He became a member of the board in 1914, and is now entering upon his fourth term. He is not only interested in the scholastic attainment of the clhildren, but gives much time and thought in determining how the general health and physical condi- tions of tlhe children may be improved. He is always ready to give of his time and service to promote the general welfare of the schools, and is an advocate of Nothing is too good for the children of Algonaf' He has three children - two in the grades and one to enter next fall. Mr. M. P. Haggard has bhe unique distinction of being the only member of the board, born in Kossxutlh Cfounty and an alumnus of the Algona High School. For years he was engaged in the abstract business, and at present in the loan and real estate business. ' He has always been a 'booster - full of pep and go. and vitally interested in the betterment of Algona and its public schools. . . He is now serving :his eighth year as a member of the board. He has three children - two in the high school, and the youngest not of school age. Mr. Haggard like other members of the board, is a very busy man but is always ready to give his time and labor for the welfare of the children of Algona. Mrs. E. C. Dickinson has the honor of being the nrst lady member of the Board of Elducation. She was born in Scotland where she secured her elementary education in a private school. After that she entered George Watson's Ladies College of Edinburgh, from which she graduated in 1896. For some time after tlnishing her college work, she was engaged as governess, teaching the children of a private family. Then Mrs. Dickinson had the good fortune of capturing a young American, or being captured by him. Tlhey came to America and in 1912, the family moved to Algona, where they have resided ever since. ' Mrs. .Dickinson has been very much interested in all civic organizations and is a. great advocate of a general education, fboth mental and pnhysicalj. She is ever ready to give of her time and energy that the efficiency of our schools may be increased. - She has two daughters - both graduates of our higwh school - the older now teach- ing at Lakota.. 'Phe other attending college at Ames. Algona is to be congratulated on having such capable and efficient members of the board - all busy, but never too busy to give a part of their time and energy in planning for the best possible education for its children.
