NV, SULLIVAN JONATHAN W1NKElL Board of Education In featuring the Board of Education we thought it very fitting to include Johna- than Winkel, president of the first Board of Education of the Ind. School District of Algona organized in 1876. Mr. Winkel is the only member of that board, now a citizen of Algona. At pre- sent writing he is in California where .he went to spend the winter' for his health. Mr. J. W. Sullivan was born and raised in Johnson County under the shadows of the State University, where he graduated from the Law Department in 1887. After graduation, he went to Sioux Falls, Sl. Dlak., where he began the practice of law, but not being satisfied with S. Dak., he returned to Iowa and settled at Algona in 1890, opening up a law office. He was elected to the school board in 1900 and has served continually ever since. In the spring of 1904 he was elected president of the school board to, succeed Mr. E. B. Butler, wlhich position he still holds. Mr. Sullivan has always manifested a deep interest in our public schools and has willingly given his time and thought in seeing that the schools maintain their effici- ency and are run on an economical basis. He has one son wlho graduated from the high school in 1922, and is now attend- ing Notre Dame. The patrons and community are to be congratulated on having so busy a man willing to devote a part of his time and energy in serving their common interests. Mr. T. P. Harrington, second in years of service on the board was born in Wis- consin. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1882, settling near Clarion in Wright County. After attending the rural schools and Clarion thigh school, he entered the State University graduating from the Law Department in 1899. Immediately after graduation he came to .Algona and began the practice of law. Mr. Harrington has always been public spirited and vitally interested in every- thing that enhances Algona and its citizens. In 1904, Mr. Harrington was appointed as a member of the board and has served ever since, entering now upon his 19th year as a member of the board. 14:11 -.1 MM, V , M F577 2 ,nw , - f-U 1-1.1, 1 L.
