DONALD I. BERNS 5 ' if 4 6 A review of the tremendous progress the United States of America has made during the middle 1900's in the fields of scientific development reveals to us more and more the need for a well rounded and strong educa- tional program. We have witnessed great strides in modes of com - munication bringing world wide events to our living rooms as they happen. We have succeeded in assuming the lead among the nations of the world in placing useful satellites in orbit and in space travel. Our strides in nuclear science and the use of atomic power for industrial purposes are rapidly overshadowing their wartime functions and showpromise ofa very productive future and a saving of our declining needed natural resources. Electronic computers are able to do the work of great numbers of human minds and hands with complete accuracy. Electronic robots will soon be probing the ocean bottoms and perhaps uncovering untold quantities of oil and mineral resources. World travel in jet propelled stratocruisers enables man to reach any country of the world within one short day, actuallyshrinking the world, so we are all neighbors. All of this has greatly changed our lives. And while we look at space travel, instant communication, elec- tronic machines and nuclear power with awe and wonder- ment, we must not forget the great role of the American family, our schools and our churches in discipling us, so we can continue to be socially well adjusted human beings. Neither must we lose sight of the importance of a sound educational training in the fundamentals and in the ability to think, nor can we fail to train ourselves to choose right from wrong, the ethical rather than the im - moral and the just rather than the unjust. 1 fsck HARVEY H.
