Secretary DOUGLAS CASE . ; ; : Ler ke ; : Treasurer The Student Senate is the governing body on campus. Not only does it approve the constitutions of all other students organizations, but it acts as a mediator between stu- dents and faculty. Some of the other functions of the senate are to sponsor various charity drives on campus, allot money to campus organizations that meet the requirements of the Senate, and to co-operate with other campus groups in sponsoring different activities. STUDENT COUNCIL . OFFICERS BURR ROBBINS . : : ‘ : President | ANNETIE:ARGANA 4 oj) =p PEL ene oVice-President JOYCE ETHERIDGE. : : ; : : : . Secretary ROBERT COFFIN ; ; ; : . : . ; Treasurer | The Student Council of the Technical Institute is the student governing body for all activities pertaining directly to the Institute. The members are elected from the student body and representative of the classes. The council works for closer co-operation between students and faculty as well as closer co- operation among the schools of the University. 68 OFFICERS DOROTHY F. CARABILLO . , ; President MARIE CHERICETTI : Vice-President EDITH FAGAN... , : : Secretary MARIE FULLER. : : : Treasurer The Women’s Student Gevemnient has played an especially important role in student affairs this year. Composed of a representative from each residence house for women on campus, this year’s council, in co-operation with Miss Geen, has succeeded in securing later closing hours for all resi- dent women. This is the essence of the new, shorter, and simpler constitution that was ratified in the fall. Another important step in the history of the W. S. G. was to place more responsibility on each representative in that she has the power to settle certain minor offences within her own house. 69 STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICERS } DOUGLAS CASE, DR. H. O. BURDICK : Co-Chairman | CORINNE HERRICK ; ; . Secretary The Student Affairs Committee, an outgrowth of the Student Life Com- . mittee, has succeeded the previous organization as a forum where student and faculty opinion meet and merge. | Under the co-chairmanship of Douglas Case and Dr. H. O. Burdick, this committee discussed many phases of campus life during the past year. Plans were made for all-campus dances, and for the observance of Mothers’ Day on campus. The committee also assumed responsibility for arranging the Campus Activities Calendar. As a meeting ground for faculty members and representatives of the student body, the Student Affairs Committee discussed matters introduced by both groups. Informed student and faculty guests were invited to the weekly meetings to enlighten committee members on particular situations. The personnel of the committee during this year included Dean Brinton Stone, Dean Elizabeth Geen, Douglas Case, Dr. H. O. Burdick, Corinne Herrick, Chaplain George Ball, Dr. Murray Rice, Barbara Guillaume, Marie Cherichetti, Mr. T. A. Parish, Alan Aronsohn, Robert Hanright, and Donald Jonas. 70 OFFICERS DOUGLAS CASE : President JOAN BAIRD ; Vice-President The cabinet of the Religious Fellowship of Alfred is composed of Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish members. Through such representation, it is hoped that students will become experienced in living among persons of varied faiths with a minimum of conflict. The purpose of the R. F. A., however, is much broader than that statement suggests. Its program includes faculty firesides, discussion groups and other activities which contribute to the welfare of students. The Newman Club represents all Catholic students on campus and its function is both religious and social. Assisted by their chaplain, Father Gerald McMinn of St. Bonaventure College, the club has had many religious services and interesting lectures. NEWMAN Ge Urb OFFICERS FRANK SNYDER : President FRANCES MULLINS Vice-President JULIANNE SANFORD Secretary LOUIS PANPINTO : Treasurer 71 OFFICERS SAT VARMA ; . : : ; : ’ : President The Independents is an organization of students not affiliated with sororities or fra- ternities. One of the big programs of the year was the sponsorship of a variety show, “Scrambled Eggs,” put on for the benefit of the World Student Service Fund. The show was supported by the Footlight Club and many of the stud ents on campus. The Independents also sponsored an “East Meets West’ program in which the Indian students on campus discussed their country. Under the leadership of Sat Varma, President, the Independents have presented these and other programs of cultural advancement for the entire campus. . INDEPENDENTS tide WHO'S WHO MEMBERS Constance Brennan Dorothy F. Carabillo Corinne Herrick Barbara Guillaume Dominick Laurie Douglas Case Hannah Saunders The outstanding achievement of any Senior is to be selected for inclusion in the directory of “Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges.” The students so honored are selected by an impartial faculty committee on the basis of scholarship, character, partici- pation in campus activities, and promise of future usefulness to business and society. This publication is released through the co-operation of over six hundred American universities and colleges. It provides a means of national recognition for students of accredited colleges, and its purpose is to serve as an incentive for students to get the most out of their college life; as a means of compensation for what they have already done; as a recommendation to the business world; and as a standard of measurement for students. VEE CLUB OFFICERS FRANKLIN HEASLEY ; ; ‘ . Commander This organization is known on campus as the ALVETS. Although the club has not con- tributed to the social calendar this year they have been active in the social life on campus. 73 i The Chorus, maintaining a nearly consistent attendance of about sixty members, has met with Prof. William Fiedler on Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the year to enjoy not only singing a different type of music than Alfred has ever attempted before, but also presenting it in public perform- ances. At Christmas, Handel’s Messiah was given before a capacity audience in the University Church with the assistance of four soloists from Rochester’s Eastman School of Music. Brahm’s Requiem was sung on Palm Sunday, with a repeat performance later. UNIVERSITY CHURCH CHOIR Students, faculty members, and towns- people comprise the membership of the Uni- versity Church Choir. Mrs. Samuel A. Scholes is the director and Mrs. Benjamin Crump is the organist. . Attendance in the choir is not half as much work as it is a pleasure and there is satisfac- tion in adding to the beauty of the Sunday church service. Christmas is a favoite season with the very lovely traditional candlelight service. The choir also sang with local choral groups in Hornell. Other important occasions were the broad- casting from Hornell and the presentation of the Crucifixion at Easter. 74 rear EL CH OTR The Chapel Choir, under the direction of Prof. William Fiedler, has changed slightly in its aspect this year. Beginning as a girls’ choir three years ago, it has now extended itself to become a mixed choir; the members are Miriam Tooke, Lois Sutton, sopranos; Norma Jacox, Hermine Deutsch, altos; Edwin Laurie, Edgar Bates, Lawrence Olson, tenors; Lou Hargas, Jerry Deutscher, and Philip Crayton, basses. Besides singing for the regular Tuesday morning chapel services at 11:00, the choir has rendered selections for special occasions such as the Founder’s Day assembly. The compositions of special interest to this group are those of Bach and the other old masters. UEN@lVver RO! TY ORCHESTRA ¥ The University Orchestra is essentially a small chamber ensemble specializing in works of some of the earlier orchestral composers. It also serves as a nucleus for the larger group which accompanies the University Chorus in such productions as Handel's Messiah and Brahm’s Requiem. It is designed to serve a dual purpose in making available for students a medium of musical expression and providing for the University an orchestral ensemble for suitable occasions. FOOTLIGHT ©€l=U;baE OFFICERS JOAN HEISE ; : : : : ; ; President ELIZABETH PENDLETON _.. ; ‘ : : Vice-President GRACE CONGDON . ; : ; Business Manager This past season found the Footlight Club back to a pre-war schedule. The season opened with the revival of the Frosh-Soph plays which were discontinued during the war years. These plays were student directed as usual. The club assisted in the production of the Variety Show which was given for the World Student Service Fund. This show later ‘went on the road” to the Bath Veterans’ Home. The major production of the year was T. S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral. The season was completed with the annual presentation of an assembly play. THETA ALPHA PHI The New York Alpha Chapter of Theta Alpha Phi, the national honor- ary dramatic fraternity, is located at Alfred University. Its membership is made up of those who have shown unusual interest in, and have particu- lar aptitudes for, dramatic produc- tion in its various phases. SPANISH CLUB | OFFICERS CORINNE HERRICK , President JEANNE MORGAN Vice-President LOIS SUTTON Secretary-Treasurer JUNE ALLAN . é . Social Chairman LYNN SCHNEIDER . Cultural Chairman MISS MABEL TAYLOR . . Faculty Advisor The purpose of the Spanish Club is to promote an interest in and an understanding of the Latin American countries among students. At monthly meetings the students are given an opportunity to converse and sing in Spanish. The chief club activity this year was Spanish week, which featured exhibitions, entertainments, a banquet, and movies. Main emphasis was given to Puerto Rico this year during Spanish week. Once more the French Club has had a busy and interesting year. Many former French students, returned from the war, have added new zest to the club. This year’s subject for the annual French week was taken from highlights of previous year’s presentations. Once again the results were well worth the efforts expended, for everyone enjoyed participating in preparing the colorful exhibitions, the banquet, the entertainment, and the French film. The monthly programs including the Rainbow Corner, films, skits, talks, and a spring hike were also especially enjoyable this year . Several years ago The American Craftsmen’s Co-operative Council decided to sponsor a school to be devoted to the development of a higher quality of craftsmanship on a practical professional level. This year The School for American Craftsmen became a part of the Liberal Arts College. In its quarters in the old Crandall Barn behind the president’s home the school instructs its students in the hand techniques of textiles, pottery, woodworking, metal-smithing, and wrought iron. To achieve its objectives, the school links instruction in design and drawing and the history of the Arts and contemporary crafts with shop techniques and production methods. Through the use of his modified apprenticeship system it is hoped that_ the Designer-Craftsman will be so educated that he can create original, useful, and needed craft products which are beautifully fashioned by hand. kd AMERICAN CERAMIC SOCIETY OFFICERS DOMINICK LAURIE : ; ‘ : President The American Ceramic Society on this campus is a student branch of the professional society. By print- ing each week’s news from the Ceramic School, Ag-Tech Institute, Craft School, and Liberal Arts Col- lege, the Fiat has sought to bring the campus closer together. More than once the number of activities warranted a two-page increase from the standard four page paper. Special issues were published at Christmas and April Fool’s day. Such regular columns as ‘College Town,” candid comments on student life, and “Letters to the Editor,” outlets to heated contro- versies, were two closely followed features. Secretary The Alfred Campus Union has been, from the beginning, an outgrowth of student desires and energies in creating a meeting place of their own. The first plans were drafted and carried out by a volunteer group of students and faculty members, using the first two rooms of Burdick Hall as a snack bar. As time has gone by and as Union needs have demanded, the Union has expanded in size, efficiency, and equipment, so that now in addition to the original snack bar meals are served and room is set aside for dancing. With the completion of a State Housing unit the Union will expand still further to furnish more for the students in the way of recreational facilities and much needed additional meeting space. Beyond this there are plans for a real Student Union building for Alfred’s campus but as yet they are indefinite. 96 INTERSORORITY COUNCIL Spapeersess iS OFFICERS CORINNE HERRICK. : : ; President JANET MATSON . ; . Secretary-Treasurer The purpose of the Intersorority Council, composed of two representatives from each sorority, is to ‘‘unify the sororities, to make for better relations, and to control all matters which may be determined to be of interest to the various organizations represented.” The 1946-47 Council attempted to place all sororities on a par by devising a rushing system fair to both large and small sororities. The council can boast of having given a gala Intersorority Ball, March 8th, as a climax to the rushing season. This affair was under the chairmanship of Neysa Jean Dixon, '48, and proved the degree of co-operation existing among the four sororities. The Intersorority Council will continue to foster this co-operative spirit. a7. 4 i OFFICERS NORA UTAL : : : : , 4 : 5 ; President JOAN GAFFNEY fs : ; : Vice-President OLIVE COHEN . : vate : Secretary | IONA BUHL ; ; ; é : ; : Treasurer Members Peggy Baker Leah Schwendler Joan Gaffney Barbara Ann Ruff June Minnick Olive Cohen Jean Keisler Nancy Terry ‘lona Bohl | Miriam Tooke Nora Utal Pledges Joan Hatfield Kay Smith Frances Barnett Ann Heylmun Peggy Pausewang Jerry Vencho . ° Constance Wands Mariana Spink Carolvymenalish Joan Bloor Helen Schwartz malie 4 . PATS § FESTIVAL | QUEEN AND ATTENDANTS With the corsages and dance programs put away and the lipstick cleaned off our best “tux” collars, we are already thinking back with gay memories of this year’s St. Pat’s festival. | Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ceramic Engineers returned to Alfred again this year amid a week-end of gala festivities. The festival started Thursday afternoon with a tea dance in Social Hall with Al Rawady and his band furnishing the music. Immediately following the tea dance the Fraternities held open house for members and guests. On Friday morning the St. Pat’s Board served breakfast in the Brick, with a menu of fruit cocktail, eggs, muffins, cereal, cookies and coffee. At eleven o'clock that morning Alfred witnessed one of the largest and best St. Pat’s parades “in history.” Klan Alpine Fraternity came through with the winning float. ... The American Ceramic Society. Just as the last float passed by John Heebner as St. Pat arrived over Pine Hill by plane. As he jumped from the plane the parachute refused to open and poor Pat had to be transported to the balcony on Main Street via the Alfred ambulance and stretcher where he immediately proceeded to give his much looked forward to oration. The movie ‘The Song of the South” was shown that afternoon. The climax of the whole affair was the big ball that evening in Davis Gym. Ray McKinley’s band furnished the music. Jayne McQuillan, was crowned Queen, attended by Constance Brennan, Barbara Guillaume, Mary Alice Butler, Corrine Herrick, Priscilla Cochrane and Ann Garside. The gym was gaily decorated with Shamrocks and roses woven into arches between the posts. ST. PAT AND QUEEN 112 i : : Aram: Boe al = VY) LL Li.
