The criteria for the University of Georgia Certificate of Merit is to maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above throughout the junior year. The scholars who receive those certifi- cates also find themselves recipients of many invitations to attend various colleges scattered throughout Georgia and the surrounding states. During the summer of 1983 Jennie Ingram attended the Georgia Governor Honor's Program in Dahlonega, Ga. One of 600 participants, Jen- nie's schedule consisted of a four hour Social Studies ma- jor, a two-and-a-half hour drama minor, and various evening activities. Both a fun and learning experience, the agenda included various trips such as one to the MLK Cen- ter for Non-Violent Social Change. To the right are ad- ditional recipients of the Univ. of Georgia Certificate of Merit Award. To be chosen as a scholar by the Phi Delta Kappa fraternity is indeed a great honor for this is one of the most prestigious organiza- tions of its kind. Last year, two juniors re- ceived nominations for this honor from the educational fraternity. 26

JUNIOR- SENIOR PROM The prom is a very special occasion for both Juniors and Seniors. It is the time of year when young men and ladies put on their debonair tuxedoes and elegant gowns to dance the night away under romantically dimmed lights. However, the Junior and Senior prom is more than just a fully extravagant experience. It is the highlight of the final two years in high school, culminating in an evening whose memory will not soon be forgotten. 25

Monica Sams was the recipient of an invitation to attend the Minority Introduction to Engineering (MITE) Program at Georgia Tech. She was one of approximately 120 students from fourteen states who attended MITE '83. Its purpose was to foster an interest in engineering in mathmatically and scientifically exceptional students. At the end of the first semester of the junior year, four students are selected by Presbyterian Col- lege as Junior Fellows. These juniors are the two female and two male scholars who hold the high- est cumulative averages for their high school ca- reers. They are invited to attend a Summer Hon- ors Program on the South Carolina Univ. Cam- pus to gain college credit and living experiences. The P.C. Junior Fellows for the 1983 school year were Halimah al-Qadi, Jennie Ingram, Philip Olivarez, and Philip Rowland. A Summer Scholars Program was sponsored by the Newspaper Fund, Gannett Corporation, and Bobby Eddy. Nichele Hoskins at- tended this program at the University of Texas at El Paso. During the 1983 school year three students were chosen as recipients of the U.S.N.J.A. All members of the Beacon Staff, and possessed journal- istic excellence and dedication. Congratulations are due to Nichele Hoskins, Anthony Jones, and Dawnique Williams for earning this national recognition. Monique Courts was chosen by application for Clark Col- lege's Summer Health Pro- gram. The program is for up- coming and post seniors in High School. An applicant is selected by grade point aver- age and science and math background. They also take the applicant's future goals into consideration. During the two month stay, these chosen few study biochemis- try lab, communications, and math. 27
