Unity is the one factor no group can survive without, for internal discord disrupts the natural flow of events within that group. Alfred E. Beach High School is one tremendous jigsaw puzzle. Each person who contributes daily to the activity of the school is one small, but vital portion of the overall picture. The student who struggles to solve an especially mystifying math problem, the patient teacher who desperately tries to explain the method he should use to solve it, the people who maintain the classroom in which he learns, and the administrators who supervise the functioning of our school all represent an important part of the whole. Within this yearbook are divisions that play a role in the smooth operation of this institution. Student Life , Administration and Classes each focus on the individuals, while Sports and Organizations focus on larger pieces of the puzzle that are themselves composed of individuals. Features emphasizes individuals who stand out in a group, or those within a certain group. Even the Ads section illustrates an important part of our school individuals and groups that support our Alma Mater. Every individual is part of the framework of our school. Each is dependent upon the other for overall unity and harmony. We are all just pieces of a puzzle . . . The Administration Above are representatives from the FBLA organization. To the left are students exhibiting spirit. Each of these pictures represents a piece of the entire Beach High puzzle. The Teachers The Students Academics in the classroom Student Life It is sometimes difficult for the high school stu- dent to comprehend what he ever did to deserve Mondays. After an all-too-brief weekend, the mere thought of trudging from class to class, loading up on homework for the week, is enough to make one's shoulders and spirits droop. So, each student must struggle through a seemingly unending six and one half hours of agony, all the while keeping his sanity by bearing in mind that he must survive only one Monday per week. Friday. Ah, marvelous Friday! As students floun- der through the week, their spirits miraculously rise with each passing day. Hail, Friday! Jubila- tion! Friday, the day of pep rallies, parties, and The weekend's finally here! It doesn't matter that the entire class has just failed the pop quiz in biology, or that an English teacher has just given her students enough homework for the next ten months. It only matters that it's Friday. Day of redemption — glorious Friday! 9 BACK TO When school becomes your every- day occupation, classes seem to be- come your master. However, there is always one place to escape the grind of classwork. The much-ac- claimed and much-visited cafeteria takes its position of tantamount importance once again as shown by Nathaniel Harvey's daily visit. The first eager student is all smiles. These students are racing to get back to school. 10 SCHOOL The end of summer comes al- most before the student real- izes it and certainly before he is ready for it. After a vacation that swiftly slipped away, the prospect of nine months spent in serious study does not seem very appetizing. However, school is not all intense educa- tion-seeking. There is time for visits to the area water foun- tain when lively class discus- sions dry the throat or to a locker to prepare for whatever may come next, whether it is changing a flat tire or study- ing in the lobby. BULLDOG Elements of Bulldog enthusiasm are shown above. ENTHUSIASM Beach High School fans show their spirit. Mr. Mole and others anxiously await the kick-off. MEMORIES REVISITED Though the main goal of each stu- dent is to receive an education, there is a time during every stu- dent's day when he needs relax- ation. It is this earnest desire for a bit of peace that sires haunts and hangouts — special places at which work-weary students con- gregate during certain times of the day. These recreative hours in a stu- dent's life, along with the serious periods of study and meditation — and all the times in-between — come together to form one compos- ite picture of his high school years. One important event in the school life of almost every student at some time or another is ring day. On ring day, the air is charged with excitement and every purchasing student is filled with happy thoughts of his upcoming gradu- ation. In future years, the treasured class ring will serve as a pleasant reminder of the bygone days of youth. OUR UNIFYING FORCE With the many components that form the entire school picture, the principal is probably the most important element of all. Without a strong leader at the helm, a school has little chance of functioning successfully. Our principal, Mr. Richard R. Mole, is like most other principals in that he is an integral part of our school and its activities, but, somehow, our beloved “Chief has come to symbolize a great deal more to our faculty and students than just the head of operations. He conducts every portion of Beach High School's business with only the best interests of our school and its private community in mind. Mr. Mole knows that the B.H.S. reputation must be upheld in every situation, and he has dedicated his career to doing just that. It is because of this devotion to making and keeping our school num- ber one that earns our principal the great respect and admiration that his Beach High family holds for him. Mr. Mole is the chief piece in our school's puzzle. He is the unifying force we need to make one total picture. 16 OUR FOREMOST PURPOSE . . . The student's main purpose for attending school is participation in an intellectually stimulating environment so that he may broaden his perspectives of life. This aca- demic atmosphere is just one portion of a student's life — one piece of the many that make up a rounded individual — but it is the portion that is his most important con- cern. On these pages, students involved in the daily pursuit of knowledge are shown — each striving to reach his academic peak. 17 e 18 HOMECOMING SWITCH-UP DAY HOMECOMING PUNK ROCK DAY Beach High School's atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm as Homecoming Week 1983 descended upon the school. Each day brought a host of activities — singing the Alma Mater, decorating homeroom doors, “switching up with fellow students, and dressing as punk rockers — to boost the spirit of the student body. Shown on the opposite page are students who participated in Switch-Up Day by dressing as totally opposite people. On this page, students who participated in Punk Rock Day are shown in the apparel of followers of a re- cent music craze. 21 THE BULLDOG REVIEW Mrs. N. Herrington, Star Teacher Umar al-Qadi, Star Student When the 1982 Golden Bulldog Yearbook was brought to the school it was, as always, an excellent yearbook, but the Annual Staff felt something lacking and cast about for a solution to the age-old question: What about spring events? In the 1983 Golden Bulldog the staff presented its answer — The Bulldog Review — a section devoted to coverage of spring and summer events that had never before gained notice. The 1984 Bulldog Re- view's purpose is the same — to give recognition to those feature events that so richly deserve it. The first of these events to be presented is the Star Stu- dent and Teacher Awards. The Star Student is the highest scoring senior on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. This stu- dent in turn chooses a teacher he feels has helped and inspired him the most throughout his four high school years. We are happy to congratulate Umar al-Qadi and Mrs. Herrington on this memorable honor. 22 In the area of science, many students deserve recognition for their entrees in the Science Fair and for other outstanding accomplishments. Halimah al-Qadi was the recipient of a Special Microbiology Award granted in honor of her exceptional science project. Other winners were in Research Paper Competition. Parul Chandra — 3rd place; Monique Johnson — 2nd place; Umar al-Qadi — 1st place; Monica Sams — 1st Place; and Dawn Gibson — 1st Place. For projects entered, Halimah al-Qadi and Dawn Gibson won 1st Place ribbons and Karen Cowart and Michael Coffe both received 2nd Place ribbons. Steve Chapman also received a blue ribbon for his project, but in addition, was awarded an Air Force Aviation Award. On the state level Halimah al-Qadi received a white ribbon and Dawn Gibson an honorable mention. Steve Brightweil has had the privilage of being the Key Club Governor, which entails leading as well as supervising all Key Clubs in the State of Georgia, this past year. This office holds a great deal of authority and glory, but with it comes the overwhelm- ing responsibility and the hours of hard work which are completed with unbridled devo- tion. Steve has been an active member in the Beach High Key Club since ninth grade. A cluster of plaque awards, certificates, tro- phies, ribbons, and other academic para- phernalia won by various Beach High Stu- dents, displays the ambition and superior drive for excellence that is instilled within many of our student body. 23 ALWAYS JUNIOR- SENIOR PROM The prom is a very special occasion for both Juniors and Seniors. It is the time of year when young men and ladies put on their debonair tuxedoes and elegant gowns to dance the night away under romantically dimmed lights. However, the Junior and Senior prom is more than just a fully extravagant experience. It is the highlight of the final two years in high school, culminating in an evening whose memory will not soon be forgotten. 25 The criteria for the University of Georgia Certificate of Merit is to maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above throughout the junior year. The scholars who receive those certifi- cates also find themselves recipients of many invitations to attend various colleges scattered throughout Georgia and the surrounding states. During the summer of 1983 Jennie Ingram attended the Georgia Governor Honor's Program in Dahlonega, Ga. One of 600 participants, Jen- nie's schedule consisted of a four hour Social Studies ma- jor, a two-and-a-half hour drama minor, and various evening activities. Both a fun and learning experience, the agenda included various trips such as one to the MLK Cen- ter for Non-Violent Social Change. To the right are ad- ditional recipients of the Univ. of Georgia Certificate of Merit Award. To be chosen as a scholar by the Phi Delta Kappa fraternity is indeed a great honor for this is one of the most prestigious organiza- tions of its kind. Last year, two juniors re- ceived nominations for this honor from the educational fraternity. 26 Monica Sams was the recipient of an invitation to attend the Minority Introduction to Engineering (MITE) Program at Georgia Tech. She was one of approximately 120 students from fourteen states who attended MITE '83. Its purpose was to foster an interest in engineering in mathmatically and scientifically exceptional students. At the end of the first semester of the junior year, four students are selected by Presbyterian Col- lege as Junior Fellows. These juniors are the two female and two male scholars who hold the high- est cumulative averages for their high school ca- reers. They are invited to attend a Summer Hon- ors Program on the South Carolina Univ. Cam- pus to gain college credit and living experiences. The P.C. Junior Fellows for the 1983 school year were Halimah al-Qadi, Jennie Ingram, Philip Olivarez, and Philip Rowland. A Summer Scholars Program was sponsored by the Newspaper Fund, Gannett Corporation, and Bobby Eddy. Nichele Hoskins at- tended this program at the University of Texas at El Paso. During the 1983 school year three students were chosen as recipients of the U.S.N.J.A. All members of the Beacon Staff, and possessed journal- istic excellence and dedication. Congratulations are due to Nichele Hoskins, Anthony Jones, and Dawnique Williams for earning this national recognition. Monique Courts was chosen by application for Clark Col- lege's Summer Health Pro- gram. The program is for up- coming and post seniors in High School. An applicant is selected by grade point aver- age and science and math background. They also take the applicant's future goals into consideration. During the two month stay, these chosen few study biochemis- try lab, communications, and math. 27 Administration OUR PRINCIPAL MR. RICHARD R. MOLE Overseeing the activities of a school with some 1,700 students is by no means an easy task. Our principal, Mr. Mole, is almost constantly in action — conferring with assistant principals, advising students, and often taking time to contemplate solutions to school problems. He is the strong leader responsible for the progress of our school. 30 ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS MR. ROBERT BLAKE MR. CORDIE WRIGHT MR. WAYNE BLAND With the hundreds of administrative tasks to be complet- ed around the school, Beach High's principal delegates some of his power to three assistant principals. They are a vital part of the smooth functioning of the school. Each assistant principal is responsible for a different facet of the school's functions. Mr. Blake handles much of the important reports and other paperwork. Mr. Bland, a former teacher at Beach and a first-year assistant princi- pal, assists Mr. Mole and disciplines students. Mr. Wright is also a disciplinarian of students, among many other duties. 33 DEDICATION MRS. OLA B. LEWIS Each year the Annual Staff chooses a member of the faculty to whom the product of its countless hours of labor — the yearbook — is dedicated. This person is always one who has contributed a great amount of support to the Annual Staff and the school, and who embodies school spirit. This year's staff dedicates thel984 Golden Bulldog to Mrs. Ola B. Lewis, a faculty member who exhibits the finest qualities of devotion, enthusiasm and support. 34 FACULTY AND STAFF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT SCIENCE DEPARTMENT MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT BUSINESS DEPARTMENT EXCEPTIONAL CHILD EDUCATION ART AND MUSIC DEPARTMENTS CUSTODIAL STAFF Hats off to our fine custodial staff here at Beach High School. Beach High School is more than just a gathering of pupils in a stimulating learning en- vironment, it is a fellowship ... a family. The Beach High family is not only a communion of love and friend- ship, but also one of togetherness. Community .. . Teachers and stu- dents work together to accomplish goals. 115 i IN QUEST OF A TITLE The Beach High Bulldogs were the unani- mous underdogs as they went into the Homecoming game against the Groves Rebels. The Bulldogs showed their true fighting spirit by letting their determina- tion push them to a victory over Groves. The offensive backs prepare for victory WE THREW OUT THE RECORD BOOKS The Mighty Bulldogs spent countless hours of practice preparing for the challenge of Beach High School's 1983 football season. The players trained diligently for weeks be- fore the beginning of school and after school hours every day so that hundreds of Bulldog fans would proudly display their Beach High Spirit. WE ARE THE BULLDOGS! The 1983 football season was one of transition for Beach High School. The Bulldogs entered the season with the same coaching staff, the determination of Coach Middleton, coupled with that of the Bulldogs. While last year's team can be described as respectable, the present team can be called formidable. ttL 4 LADIES VARSITY BASKETBALL From left: Kiwonder Davis — Soph., Steph- anie Lewis — Sr., Sheryl Moore — Soph., Jackie Jones — Soph., Cheryl Davis — Jr., Katrina Edwards — Fr., Contessa Tolbert — Jr., Monique Courts — Jr., Jaqueen Evans — Jr., Michelle Pendergraph — Soph., Jeree Jefferson — Jr., Melvaree Davis — Sr., De- bra Sloman — Sr., Deidre Johnson — Sr., Martesa Anderson — Fr. The Ladies Varsity Basketball Team is coached by Ronald Booker and Abro Williams. Coach Booker has been with Beach High's Ladies Basketball Team for seven years, and during these seven years he has always produced a good team. He puts forth extra time and effort in coaching each girl. Coach Booker believes in loyalty, dedication, pride, and leadership — not only to him but to the teammates and the school. He also believes that if an athlete can't function in school he will not be able to function on the basketball court. Therefore each player has to obtain a 2.0 average, (but he prefers better), and the team's average must be at least 3.0. If this average is not maintained the players can expect to hear from him. Coach Booker received his 100th win in seven years on November 26, 1983 and has lost only 32 games. Coach Williams has been his right-hand man through good times and bad. Together they have worked diligently to make the Beach High Lady Bulldogs the best basketball team around. f 122 GUARDS TEAM FORWARDS J.V. Without the help of these young ladies, the varsity team would have a difficult season. 124 LADY BULLDOGS IN ACTION Coach Booker voices his opinion in the huddle. MISS QUINTESSENCE AND RUNNERS-UP Nicole Rivers a freshman here at Beach, is Miss Quintes- sence for the 1983-84 school year. Though this vigorous Virgo is seldom without tasks to perform, Nicole does find time to spend on her many hobbies which include dancing, skating and modeling. One of the requirements for Miss Quintessence is that she must be a good student. From Left at Bottom: Stephanie Burgess, who is also a fresh- man, is a diligent worker and student. This Sagittarius is an aspiring poet who enjoys dancing, and skating as well. Stephanie has many goals as a student here at Beach, one of which is to return as a member of the Drill Team next year. Sabrina Kent is a sophomore here at Beach, but she is also a first-year member of the Drill Team. Her zodiac sign is Scorpio and she enjoys playing softball and listening to music. Sonja Biggins is a junior who is also a first-year Drill Team member. This Sagittarius enjoys playing the piano, skating, and dancing. Another of her favorite pasttimes is socializing with all types of people. Miss Quintessence personifies the zenith of dedication and precision as drill team performer. She shows dedication and loyalty towards being the best every day in practice and at all games. 162 The Marching Blue and Gold Quintessence is a prestigious division of the marching band. The Beach High Drill Team consists of thirty-nine members exhibiting coordination, poise, neat appearance and endurance under the supervision of Mrs. Essie Johnson and the officers. DRILL TEAM OFFICERS The Marching Blue and Gold Quintessence is a team dependent mainly upon creativity and precision for its success. As with any performing group, it is necessary for a constant flow of ideas to be available to the performers, and for the Drill Team, it is the officers who compose this pool of creative genius. These inventive young women are: Commander, Denise Baker; First Lieutenant, Karen Cook; Second Lieutenant, Willa Brown; Drill Sergeant, Dawnique Williams; Sergeant, Cynthia Holmes; Corporal, Bernadette Ball; Choreographer, Henrietta Fleming. Once the finishing touches are put on every routine, it is up to the rest of the team to breathe life into an otherwise lifeless plan. 166 First Row, Left to Right: E. Stephens, C. Nelson, T. Beach High School Marching Band is one of the most exciting organizations in our school. Members of the Marching Bulldogs have a great amount of pride in their school and in their football team. Their spirit emerges in full force at the driving pre-game pep rallies. They strive to produce the high- est quality performance at each halftime during the ten-week season. During halftime they get roaring cheers from the audience. They let the audience know that they back their Bulldogs one hundred percent — win or lose. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS HAVE GOT IT TOGETHER J.V. Not only does it motivate the various teams to perform well, but an abundant supply of spirit also encourages the student body to appreciate its school and to take pride in it. This is why it is important for students to show enthusiasm at games, pep rallies, and wherever else it is needed. School supporters must not simply sit quietly spectating an event, but they should actively participate by proudly displaying their school colors. On this page, several of the school-supporter” organizations — the band, the drill team, and the majorettes — are shown in perfor- mance. 173 t The officers of the Beach High Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America are Carol Colson, President; Eric Roberson, Vice President; Gina Pruitt, Secretary; Melissa Burnsed, Treasurer; Cathy Edwards, Reporter; Caroline Latimer, Historian; Paulette Humphrey, Chaplain; Jennifer Joyner; Sgt. at Arms, and Emily Harpe, Parliamentarian. THE GOLDEN BULLDOG STAFF 1983-84 The Golden Bulldog Yearbook Staff works hard to produce a top quality annual. Through out the year, the deadlines are hard to meet, but the diligent staff always comes through. Staff members' work consists of drawing layouts, taking and developing pictures, tracking down the names of all Beach High students, and selling advertisements. Without these industrious students and their advisor, M.B. Heath, the 1984 Golden Bulldog could not exist. To qualify as a member of the staff, you must maintain a 2.0 grade point average, sell a minimum of $150.00 in advertisements, and be willing to give some of your free time to the staff. M.B. Donna Lynn Morris Hope LaChelle Williams MISS BEACH PAGEANT 1983 Since the beginning of time, few events have come close to the spectacular event of the Miss Beach Pageant. The night of Wednesday, December 14,1983 at 7 o'clock p.m., was a time of anxiety, high-strung emotions, and mild form of dread on the part of the contestants. The audito- rium filled with rows of expectant faces — some clouded with worry, some with joyful anticipation, and all with much hope. Meanwhile, behind the stage, there was a great deal of running around and trying to get ready as Donna Lynn Morris, Hope LaChelle Williams, Lisa Carol Sterling, Monica Dian Sams, Jennifer Anne Ingram, and Linda Renese Jordan prepared for the four categories of compe- tition including sportwear, talent, evening wear, and last- ly the impromptu questioning. AS Caroj terUn Monica Dian Sams Jennifer Anne Ingram During the impromptu questioning, the following ques- tions were asked: Donna Morris What person has influenced your life the most and why? Honesty, integrity, and friendliness because they exem- plify true friendship which never fades away. Monica Sams What reforms do you feel are needed in public education? A stronger foundation in God is needed, for to get back to the basics we need God in our lives. Jennie Ingram If you had three wishes, what would you wish for? The first would be world peace; the second, for all to have the love of their fellow man; and the third, for everyone to hear the word of God. Linda Jordan If elected President of the U.S. in 1984, what would be your first act? Why? To end all nuclear armament supportings because it has caused too much trouble. 197 198 On the night of the pageant, the Miss Beach contestants presented many different talents. It was an extravaganza of music, drama and laughter as each contestant brought delight to every member of the audience. The first contestant, Donna Lynn Morris, gave a beauti- ful rendition of The Rose from the movie of the same name. Donna was accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Mary Sue Reagan. Hope LaChelle Williams, the second contestant, per- formed a comedy skit. The skit, entitled I've Gotta Be Me, was a commentary on the virtues of individuality. Contestant number three, Lisa Carol Sterling, showed her dexterity as a flutist by performing a classical piece. Lisa was accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Reagan. Monica Dian Sams, the fourth contestant, displayed her acting ability by dramatizing Go Down Death. The poem is a sermon in verse written by James Weldon Johnson. The fifth contestant, Jennifer Anne Ingram, sang Out Here On My Own from the movie Fame . She was accompanied by Mrs. Reagan on the piano. Linda Renese Jordan, the final contestant, sang Send Her (Him) My Love, originally performed by Journey. Linda was accompanied by Mrs. Reagan on the piano. The highlight of the pageant's intermission entertain- ment was the performance by Lawrence Bradley, Dean Maddox, Josh Bryant, Don Moore and Sam Johnson. They performed a snappy, upbeat version of the old Christmas classic Jingle Bells . After Miss Beach 1983, Denice Brown, took her final walk the much-anticipated moment arrived. The run- ners-up were named and Miss Beach 1984, Hope La- Chelle Williams, was crowned. Beach High School stu- dents always eagerly participate in the week's fes- tivities — displaying their school spirit and joining in a gala display of school pride. The Homecoming Week's festivities culminated with a night of won- der and majesty during which the Homecoming Queen — the epitome of school spirit — was crowned. The first contestant for Miss Homecoming was Denice Baker, Commander of the school's drill team, The Blue and Gold Quintessence. Though Denice spent much of her time perfecting the team's routines, she also served as Clubs Editor on the Beach Beacon, the school's newspaper. Denice was named First Runner-up. A Varsity Cheerleader, Harleisa Davis, was the sec- ond contestant. Harleisa displayed one of her many talents, singing, by participating in the school cho- rus as well. A major promoter of school spirit as Editor-in- Chief of the Beach Beacon, Nichele Hoskins was the third contestant. Nichele, a former Varsity Cheer- leader and Student Government Reporter, was named Second Runner-up. 205 CONTESTANTS 1983-1984 Deidre Johnson, Captain of the Varsity Cheer- leaders, was elected Miss Homecoming 1983. Dei- dre, one of the most spirited students in the student body, also served as President of Future Homemak- ers of America and held membership in the Beta Club, an honor society. A member of the Charismarettes (Majorettes), Joe- queata Russell was the fifth contestant. Joequeata was also once active as a member of The Marching Blue and Gold. The sixth contestant was Tonya Wilmore, a Varsity Cheerleader. Tonya served as Vice President of Fu- ture Homemakers of America and held membership in Future Business Leaders of America. Tonya was named First Runner-up. 206 All of the anxiety of Homecoming Week climaxed on the night of Octo- ber 8, 1983 with the passing of the Homecoming crown to Deidre John- son. During the halftime festivities at Memorial Stadium, Deidre was crowned before the hundreds of Beach High students and alumni in atten- dance. This victory came as a great surprise to Deidre, but certainly not an unpleasant one. Deidre is pictured at right with her escort, her brother Richard Johnson, and Miss Homecoming 1982, Wanda Williams. Above, Wanda crowns a tearful yet jubilant Deidre; Deidre holds the game ball and she is shown with her escort. Many students at Beach have part-time jobs. These students maintain acceptable academy averages as well as a part-time job. If it weren't for these dedicated staffers, the Golden Bulldog would lack its originality. Each staffer was asked to sell $150 worth of ads to be a member of the staff. Technical services for the paper industry Around the corner, around the state. By any measure, it was a monumental undertaking. The challenge was, using the best available technology, to provide our Savannah Plant with total self-sufficiency in the generation of electricity. The outcome of that challenge is this coun- try's largest industrial power boiler. The $139 million project includes: •A coal and wood waste fired boiler which operates at pressures up to 1800 psi. •A turbine generator capable of producing 72,000 kilowatts an hour. •A six week maximum (or 42,000 ton) coal storage area and handling system. •A precipitator for removing particulates which operates at 99.6% efficiency. •A computer-based system for energy management which allows use of the lowest cost fuel. Our dependency on fuel oil natural gas is now only 10%, compared with 25% before the boiler went on line. Meeting the challenge is saving the equivalent of one million barrels of fuel oil annually. However, the individual, a microcosm of the whole, repre- sents the uniqueness that is every bit as important to the survival of the total group. The Beach High School family and every family member represented oneness. As in any family there were times of togetherness — laughter, joy and comaraderie — but there were also times of aloneness — contemplation, solitude and distinction. Still, one was so much more than just one; it was a group standing as one, each member believing in the other and staunchly supporting the parts and the whole. Every individual is one small piece of a huge puzzle — each joining with another and expanding from scattered frag- ments into one harmonious picture. 264 265 A'dam t, Connie S7 Adams, Shawn SO. 82. 251 Adams, Thomas 106. 214 Adana Kenneth 263 Addison, li .i 7. 187. 215 Adgcr, Pam 136 Adkins D-.nne SO. 251 Aiken , Ann 36 Al's Cleaners 226 Alkofcr Simone 106, 146 Alexander. Stacy 176 Young, Wilbert • 203 267 268 EDITOR'S NOTE Dear Students and Faculty, A yearbook is as much a part of a student's high school memorabilia as the class ring or a scrap- book of treasured mementos. It is a priceless collection chronicling golden moments of our teenage years in words and pictures. Because it is such an important element of our carefree school days, the annual staff labored meticulously to produce a book that, hopefully, meets with the approval of the students, faculty and administra- tion. Along with the title Editor-in-Chief came many afterschool and weekend hours of toil. At times responsibilities weighted heavily upon my shoulders, but there were always those who soothed my anxieties and supported my cause. I could not have succeeded at this monumental task without God's guidance and inspiration. Also, my tolerant, loving mother, Mrs. Elease D. Sams, was a major motivating force during my times of despair. It is needless to say that the encouragement of my patient adviser, Mrs. Ma- tilda B. Heath, was of tantamount importance. There are a few staff members whose work was of special quality and whose attitudes were ex- tremely pleasant. Marcey Dolgoff's division pages and layouts contributed greatly to the at- tractiveness of the book. Lisa Sterling's creative use of graphics in Classes and Hope Williams' perseverance with layouts earned my sincerest gratitude and admiration. 1 must also thank Mrs. Ola B. Lewis and Mrs. Essie D. Johnson for a strong background in English which is vital in writing good copy. The result of hundreds of man-hours spent by the Annual Staff, this yearbook is a labor of love standing as a testament of the pride we hold for our cherished Alma Mater. It is our sincere hope that the 1984 Golden Bulldog will be treasured by members of the Beach High family for many years to come. Sincerely, 6 JOSTENS
