Happy Birthday To You . . . Alfred Ely Beach High School celebrated its birthday for the first time last year. After much planning, and preparation, this historic institution culminated weeks of effort with a program on February 18, 1982. The idea for a birthday celebration originated with our principal, Mr. Richard Mole. Because Mr. Mole is an alumnus of Beach High, his interest in the school's history was deeply rooted. After preliminary research by the Sports Staff of the Beacon, Mr. Mole asked the Newspaper Staff to further research the history of our great school. The Newspaper Staff then compiled information, contacted former graduates and solicited student involvement by sponsoring an essay contest. Also compiling information were Becky Ingram, Vicky Hall, and Sonya Pleasant. The theme, We have sailed the rough seas of the past. Beach High, where do we go from here? proved to be an excellent focal point for the educational and entertaining program. At the start of the program Monica Sams served as mistress of ceremonies and Steve Brightwell gave the inspiration. After the introduction by Leslie Brown, Dr. Clifford Hardwick, a former graduate of Beach gave an inspiring speech highlighting our school's glorious history and its hopeful future. Brian Silverman presented from the city of Savannah, a document proclaiming February as A.E. Beach High School Month. The birthday celebration not only gave the students a hope for our school's future, but it also provided a reason for pride in our school's history. Let us strive to make both the pride and the hope remain forever alive. A True Champion Last year at the JCL State Convention, Henry Chow was a recipient of the Lily B. Hamilton Scholarship. This scholarship is award annually to two or three stu- dents from Georgia who have contributed the most to the efforts of the GJCL in their four years of high school. While at the convention, Henry won five first place ribbons. These were in the field of mottos, and literature tests, pencil drawings, posters, and maps. Henry has certainly proven that he is a true champion in every aspect of the phrase.
