■ r '• • • .■ • % i • • 1982 Golden Bulldog A.E. Beach High School Savannah, Georgia Alfred Ely Beach The history of the present Alfred E. Beach High School dates back to a period closely related to the history of Negro education in Savannah and Chatham County, Georgia. The individual responsible for helping to begin this his- tory was Colonel Alfred Ely Beach. Colonel Beach was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in the year of 1826. He was educated at Monson Academy in Monson, Mas- sachusetts. When very young. Colonel Beach became a mechanical genius and was also noted as an inventor. His inventions included the first successful typewriter with radial swinging arms. He was responsible for the begin- ning of the elaborate pneumatic tube system much used in New York to transport mail and telegrams. Colonel Beach was concerned with the welfare and education of Negroes in Chatham County. The American Missionary Association with the aid of a substantial contribution from Colonel Beach, opened a school for Negroes in Savannah, Georgia, in 1864. This educational unit was located at Harris and Price Streets and named Beach Insti- tute. Negro education between 1911-1950 reached its peak on the eighth grade level, but in 1915 Cuyler Junior High School was erected and the ninth grade was added. This level was maintained through 1922. In 1922 one teacher was employed and one class on the tenth grade level operated in the stone building at Cuyler Junior High School. The period of operation was brief. The first Congregational Church then decided to re-open the old Beach Institute and the school bore the name Beach Continuation School. In 1924, The Chatham County Board of Education was requested to include the continuation school as a part of the Savannah-Chatham County School System. This was granted and the school was renamed Beach High School. Louis Callen became the first principal. During the period of 1924-1929, the old Beach Building failed to accomodate the growing student body and was also in need of extensive repairs. At the invitation of John Wesley Hubert, Principal of Cuyler Junior High School, the Chatham County Board of Education was asked to move the school to the west wing of the Cuyler Junior High School. Mr. Haynes became the principal of the combined schools, serving until his retirement. At the retirement of Principal Hubert in 1940, Martin G. Haynes, Principal of the West Board Street Elementary School was named principal. Mr. Haynes passed away in 1948. He was succeeded in that same year by Otha L. Douglass. Beach and Cuyler as combined schools were separated on January 26, 1950, and the senior High School moved to the newly built Alfred E. Beach Senior High School on January 30, 1950. In 1965, Mr. Douglas was transferred to Scott Junior High School, and Mr. Joseph Green, then principal of Beach Junior High School, was named principal. Mr. Green served until his retirement in 1970, at which time Mr. Otis J. Brock was named principal. During the administration of Mr. Brock, intergration was accomplished, the curriculum was expanded and the school community greatly enlarged. In 1976, Mr. Richard Mole, a loyal, dedicated alumnus of A.E. Beach took the reins as principal. Under Mr. Mole's tutelage the school has made great strides academically and has taken on a new sense of pride demonstrated by the students, the parents, and the community at large. He has impressed upon the student that all things, regardless of their level of difficulty, can be achieved if there is unity. With this philosophy and Mr. Mole's guidance, the school will continue to perpetuate the name: Alfred Ely Beach. Beach High Alma Mater BEACH HIGH ALMA MATER Beach High Alma Mater fairest Dearest school so true Faith and loyalty we cherish Praise we sing to you Truth and love and honor right, Make us strong and bold. Hail thy loving colors bright. Hail the blue and gold. God protect dear A.E. Beach High May she firmly stand Through the years before her lying. Guided by thy hand. Beach High! Beach High! Alma Mater Voices loud we raise. For our school, we sons and daughters Sing thy glorious praise. CHORUS A. E. BEACH MCQMM1 4 JLLDOOS1 4 From the outset of this year, it was obvious that it would be the best year yet, the students, unified with the usual Beach High Spirit, were ready for work, and the teachers were anxious to begin guiding their pupils along the path of knowledge. However, faculty meetings, books, and the student's test were not the only elements with which the students and faculty were concerned. At every football game, a tremendous group of Bulldog Fans could be found cheering their team, chant- ing Fight Fight Bulldogs, and singing the Alma Mater. Football was not the only athletic activity that was attended by beach High students and personnel. Basketball, Softball, Soccer, and many other sports provided entertainment throughout the entire year. What do students at Beach High do when they have finished with their books and have no athletic games to view? They turn to organizations. The clubs serve the school and community with many contributions. These organizations also develop leadership qualities in students and prepare them for the future. Activities held during the year such as Miss Beach, and Miss Homecoming, give students a chance to join one another in friendly competition. The overwhelming sense of friendship experienced at Beach High School has helped to make The Year of the Dog the most fulfilling year ever. 5 6 7 LIFE 4 These pages chronicle students' everyday happenings during The Year of the Dog. With photo- graphs and words of wisdom, we will learn of the people and ideas that make our school unique. GRADUATES 46 The goal of yesterday will be the starting point of tomorrow. — Anonymous Graduation marks an important stage in the lives of these young men and women. It should not be looked upon as the end of fun and frolic , but as the begin- ning of new and challenging exper- iences. For this glorious achieve- ment, we salute you, class of 1982! SCHOLARS 86 Learning is a great thing, for the key of knowledge unlocks the door to success. This section presents those students who use each day as a stopping stone towards their goals. FACULTY and ADMINISTRA- TION 26 B.H.S. is truly proud to boast of its great instructors and administra- tors. Here we find the people who are instrumental in the accom- plishments of our students — dur- ing The Year of the Dog and ev- ery year. ATHLETICS 70 Meet the teams that made this The Year of the Dog . Football, softball, basketball — in every sport, other teams tasted the Mighty Bulldog's fury! INNER CIRCLES 132 Now in the spotlight are the inner circles of Beach, which are vital in the functioning of our school. These is an organization for every interest at Beach, so be sure to size up this portion of the book. ACTIVITIES 116 This portion covers main events of B.H.S. Included are our reigning queen and Miss Homecoming. ADVERTISEMENT 202 This book is brought to you by . . . In the limelight are our spon- sors, who helped make our book possible. Beach High School Students know that there is a time and a place for everything. The students on these pages focus their attention on doing the best work possible. The students here at Beach High realize that although school can be a place for socializing, its main purpose is to educate its students. Work before play 12 We do not only gain knowledge from books 13 Teacher of the year finalist for Chatham County Fun Time The Beach High Bulldogs have that spirit! — Especially during homecoming week and pep rallies. A sea of blue and gold fills our school's auditorium as we celebrate together. The love, togetherness, and good cheer the student body shares is indeed unique in an academic environ- ment. 14 lr. Everyone Is The Architect Of His Own Future 19 Remember It Takes Both Black And 20 White Keys Of The Piano To Play The Star Spangled Banner Our Biggest Fan Among the many Beach High graduates there is one in particular that stands out among the rest because he is still with us, not as an administration member but rather a volunteer who can always be found in or near the Doghouse helping the coaches in whatever needs to be done. He is always at every game supporting the Bulldogs with all his heart. His true spirit is always shown. Since this spirit has been so strong in the past and seems that it will always be, we feel honored that he has such pride in his Alma Mater. It is for this reason that we proclaim John Brown — also known as Big John — Beach High's greatest fan. 22 Smile An Everlasting , Memories Of A Year Gone , Written In Everlasting , Scattered Pictures In Our Minds. There Is No Danger Of Developing Eye Strain 24 From Looking On The Bright Side Of Things. Looking on the bright side of things is not one of the normal reactions you would receive from a high school student. With all the homework, classwork, and other extra assignments, the outlook for most is very grim. However, there is always a bright side to everyth- ing, no matter how tragic the circumstances may seem. We, as students, should make it our responsibility to have a positive attitude toward every goal we want to accomplish, whether minor or major. It does not matter how negative you may be about your present lifestyle or your future, a positive atti- tude always helps to make your work more worth- while. When you consider all the aspects and advantages of looking on the bright side of things, you can see for yourself that it is better to have a brighter out- look rather than having eyestrain from not looking for the bright side. 25 FACULTY i, ADMINISTRATION Dedication Each year the Golden Bulldog Staff picks the one member of the Beach High Fam- ily that they feel best exemplifies out- standing leadership ability and school spirit. This year, because of his outstand- ing cooperation, support, and spirit we feel honored to dedicate this year's book to Mr. Hutchins. 28 Mr. Richard R. Mole Concern for and trust in Beach High and its stu- dents, faculty, and administrators continue to be the prime force of importance in the life of our Princi- pal, Mr. Richard R. Mole. His major concern is for the welfare of Beach High's student body. He be- lieves in change for the sake of improvement, not merely for the sake of changing. The phenomenal growth of our school during the past five years exhibits his hard work and dedica- tion to our school. As we walk around our school we can see many of the improvements achieved by Mr. Mole. Namely is an addition to our school's library. We the members of the Beach High family feel that persons who unselfishly give of their services should not go unheralded. Beach High's values are traditionally high, yet no other man exemplifies this heritage as does Mr. Mole — Through his very actions, words, and deeds. 29 Assistant Principals Mr. Robert E. Blake Mr. Cordie Wright A principal's duties are very demanding. He takes on many responsibilities. Fortunately he has fellow Co- workers to help him out. Our three assistant principals are Robert E. Blake, Cordie Wright, and Ray Pandtle. They each work very hard trying to carry out their duties and responsibilities to improve our school. t 30 Mr. Ray Pandtle “Teacher Of The Year Mrs. O.B. Lewis The 1981-82 Teacher of the Year is none other than the illustrious Mrs. Ola B. Lewis. She has taught at Beach High School for six years and has been teaching for twelve years. Mrs. Lewis, lovingly known around the school as Super- teach 1 ,' emulates that title. Since coming to Beach High school, she has been an extremely active faculty member. She was Beach's representative on the Board's Plan for Planning Committee under Dr. Harrison. She also co-chaired the school's SAC study. Presently, she is chairman of the English department, the school's repre- sentative for the Superintendant's Employee Advisory Committee, and the school's staff development represen- tative. Mrs. Lewis was also one of five persons chosen to revise the English curriculum for the quarter system and was hired to write the courses for the transition to the semester system. And last, but certainly not least, Mrs. Lewis is not only our teacher of the year, but she was chosen as one of two finalists in the Chatham County Teacher of the Year Contest, a first for Beach High School. Dedication is the word that best describes her. Mrs. Lew- is, who has often acted as a mother and big-sister figure, has the philosophy that the key to learning is mutual respect and understanding. With these ingredients and a little motivation, she feels that every person is able to learn. Our teacher of the year is a versatile young lady. She is a wife and the mother of one son. Her hobbies include singing, reading and public speaking. Hats off to you, Mrs. Lewis! We are proud of you. You indeed exemplify the epitome of a true Teacher of the Year. 32 Mrs. Edna Bowens Mr. Eugene Fallis Miss Virginia Hudson Mr. Frank Blackshear Mrs. Patricia Lawson Mr. Beryl Rubnitz Mrs. Anna Aikens Mrs. Essie Johnson Mrs. Ola Lewis Mrs. Geneva Smith Mrs. Alix Thompson Ms. Cheryl Smith Reading is only part of the job, but under- standing is what it's all about. Our lives as high school seniors Dwindles slowly to an end. The days that we have spent here, Have been days of hectic strain. The years that we have spent. Were years of joy and pain. Remember when we started out; How shy we used to be! We were scared to reach out and touch The concepts of reality. But as the years went by. Reality began to shine Replacing all the shyness Hidden in our minds. As seniors we have learned, That to succeed we must be as one. And if we were not as one. The job was -not well done. So, as one, we will be. Together, we will stand. And as people — and as bulldogs. We will forever walk hand-in-hand. Written by: Frank Simmons, Jr. SENIOR CLASS SONG My Greatest School Lyrics by: Frank Simmons, Jr. and Eric Graham Beach High, There's only you in my life — The only school that's right. My high school. You took me in my first day And led me all the way. And I, I want to show — All my pride in you. No other school will do. And your love. It tells me how much you care. Oh yes, you will always be My greatest school. Beach High, Thanks for the memories — The times you've given me Forever, I'll hold you close to my heart, I wish we'd never part. And Beach, I'll do my best for you. I'm sure, you know, I don't mind. Cause you, you mean the world to me I know, 1 found — In you, my greatest school. And Beach, I'll do my best for you. I'm sure; You know 1 don't mind. And you. You are the school for me. Cause no one can deny This pride I have inside. And I'll do my best for you, Beach High, My Greatest School! Even before the start of school, the Golden Bulldog Staff began the long and hard journey towards producing an annual. After a difficult summer full of ad sales and annual meetings. Staff members come to Beach prepared for the grueling tasks lying ahead of them. With deadlines to be met, our editor Hope Farrer and the adviser, Mrs. Heath, struggle along with the whole staff to get photographs taken, layouts drawn, and copies writ- ten. Eventually as the year progresses, the last deadline is met and the rest of the year is spent in anticipation of the upcoming annual. When the yearbooks finally arrive, there is obvious pride in the staff for the unquestionably supervisor GOLDEN BULLDOG that has resulted from their persevering efforts. Every year, more than 20,000,000, Americans roll balls down gleaming wood- en alleys, or lanes, and try to knock down 10 wooden pins. This year our team consists of three very talented players: Robert Reid, Cheryl Lindblad, and Greg Lindblad Captain: Greg Lindblad 178 Tennis Team Tennis is an exciting game played with racquets and a ball on a large court. Two players bat the ball back and fourth over the net strung across the middle of the court. Each player tries to score points by hitting the ball so that his opponent cannot return it over the net and inside the court. The 1981-82 tennis team is composed of 10 talented players: Back row 1-r — John Walker, Debra Smalls, Cynthia Stevens, Levi Davis, and Phillip Rowland. Front row 1-r — Jody Webb, Linda Arkwright, Chandra George, and Norris Thomas. Advisors: Mr. H. Jenkins Miss J. We are very proud of the pro- gress of our soccer team. It was organized four years ago under the leadership of Mr. Shoff. Their strongest area is found in their offense. During these four years, they have learned that teamwork is very impor- tant. It has helped to improve their passing and shooting. Their goal is to further improve and strengthen their defense. They are trying hard to become the region's third place winner for the 1981-82 year. The Beach High Softball team had a good season for the school year 1981-82. Their record was 13-7, in spite of a losing streak of 7 games at the end of the season. Go- ing to the Regional tournament was only part of the Lady Bulldogs' perfection. They won 3 games out of 5. 199 Football Awards Willie Jones — Most Valuable Player George Brunson — Offensive Back 1 Carlos Walker — Defensive Back Joseph Barnwell — Defensive Lineman John Nixson — Defensive Back This year the 1982 Golden Bulldog spotlights Coach Ronald Booker for his diligent work in athletics. Coach Booker is respected by both fel- low teachers as well as students. His students say that, he makes team members feel like a family and he strives for perfection but care only about having his team do its best in representing Beach High; not in winning or los- ing. One student remarked that Coach Booker has encouraged a strong women's sports pro- gram. Coach Booker's fellow instructors attribute his highly ranked teams to hard work, understand- ing, patience, and the care he puts forth. It is their belief that he doesn't care about winning, but wishes only to build students into adults. In short. Coach Ronald Booker has become a respected member of the Beach High Family through an enormous dedication to Beach High and its students and faculty. 201 '00 ADVERTISEMENTS (912) 234-5810 Home (912) 236-1506 Office [0 CARTHON REALTY COMPANY We Appreciate Serving You Sally Stanley, Sales Associate 1101 Stiles Ave Savannah, GA 31401 r Please Don't Forget Us . . . In 1980, we made great strides toward this objective. We produced each ton of paper in Savannah with 20% less fossil fuel than in 1979. Since 1972 we have reduced our fossil fuel usage by 41%. To continue this energy saving perfor- mance, a $112 million power boiler is under construction at the Savannah Plant. The combination coal and wood waste boiler will be completed the first half of 1982. It will provide the plant with an energy independence it has never before had and will reduce our dependency on fuel oil by the equivalent of a million bar- rels a year. The annual staff worked hard this year but the 1982 Bulldog would not have been possible without your patience, guidance, and inspiration. Putting an annual together is sometimes difficult, yet we all managed to see it through. The juniors and sophomores are looking forward to more rewarding work on the staff, but the seniors will be leaving the Bulldog staff for new and exciting experiences. They will miss the joy and satisfaction of annual production, and maybe, some of the tribulations but they all agree that the worst part is leaving the teacher they care so much about. These words are mere indicators of the great love and affection we have for you, Mrs. Heath. We could never express how we feel about you, but please accept this page as a symbol of how much we care. And Today Well Lived, Makes Every Yesterday A Dream Of Happiness And Tomorrow A Vision Of Hope. The World Is Ours Our high school years are just preliminaries of work- ing towards the goal which each of us has set. There will be many years of hard work, responsibility, and challenges ahead. The education we are get- ting now is very important, because it is preparing us for stepping out into the world. For when we can truly say without a doubt that we have made a contri- bution to society through our successes, then we can state proudly, The world is ours! There are very few, excluding previous editors who recognize the great emotional stress placed on the person undertaking this monumental task. This yearbook could not have been completed without the direction of my advisor, Mrs. M.B. Heath. There were numerous occasions on which she neglected herself to aid the annual staff. When others would disappoint the staff, Mrs. Heath would smile encouragingly and say, How bout them dawgs! I thank God for letting me work under such a remarkable lady. Many thanks go to Mrs. Ola Lewis and Ms. Anna Ferguson for constantly proofreading and editing many pages. I would also like to express my appreciation to Mrs. Jesse Jenkins for being an outstanding homeroom teacher and my avid supporter. Chris deserves a great deal of praise for her diligence as a co-editor. It was always encouraging to know that I could put my trust in her when necessary. Special thanks go to my twin ', Sharon Bond, for being such an outstanding class editor. She was always ready to lend her assistance to anyone needing help. My utmost gratitude is extended to, my sister, Shari Farrer, for her immense support throughout my high school years. She inspired me to strive for th highest goals possible. My final and most gracious thanks go to my mother for giving me the strength to go on when I thought I could go no ftpther. Mom 1 hbpe you are as proud of me as I I am of you. f To the class of 1982, I hope you value and cherish this book for many years to ii 268 , . JOSTENS iNOION Y E RBCXX CONPiNY •
