Did You Know Who He Was? Colonel Alfred Ely Beach was close- ly related to the early education among Negroes in Chatham County. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1826, he was educated at Monson Academy, Monson, Massachusetts. At an early age. he became a mechani- cal genius and inventor of note. His inventions included the first successful typewriter with radial swinging arms. He was responsible for the beginning of the elaborate pneu- matic tube system which now trans- ports mail and telegrams around New York City. In 1864. the American Missionary Association, with the aid of a substan- tial contribution from Colonel Beach, opened a school for Negroes in Sav- annah. Georgia. This educational unit was located at Harris and Price Streets and named Beach Institute. The school closed in 1916 and remained closed until 1922. It was reopened as the Beach Continuation School. In 1924, this unit became part of the local school system. Beach closed its doors again in 1929 but carried its name to Cuyler Junior High. It remain- ed there at Cuyler and Anderson Streets as Beach-Cuyler until January 1950.
