Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1973 volume:

The Golden Bulldog Published by the Students of The Mighty Alfred Ely Beach Senior High Did You Know Who He Was? Colonel Alfred Ely Beach was close- ly related to the early education among Negroes in Chatham County. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1826, he was educated at Monson Academy, Monson, Massachusetts. At an early age. he became a mechani- cal genius and inventor of note. His inventions included the first successful typewriter with radial swinging arms. He was responsible for the beginning of the elaborate pneu- matic tube system which now trans- ports mail and telegrams around New York City. In 1864. the American Missionary Association, with the aid of a substan- tial contribution from Colonel Beach, opened a school for Negroes in Sav- annah. Georgia. This educational unit was located at Harris and Price Streets and named Beach Institute. The school closed in 1916 and remained closed until 1922. It was reopened as the Beach Continuation School. In 1924, this unit became part of the local school system. Beach closed its doors again in 1929 but carried its name to Cuyler Junior High. It remain- ed there at Cuyler and Anderson Streets as Beach-Cuyler until January 1950. At this time, it moved into the at 47th and Hopkins ecame known as the Al- igh School. present pla Streets and fred E. Bead int bee :h Hi; Alfred Ely Beach (1826-1896) wmits S?t%TX..r to ... To Beauty 4 Miss Homecoming and Court Miss Booster and Court The key of Leadership was a well used key at Beach this year. Leaders, from the principal’s office to the offices of student leaders, provided the impetus to keep the school in motion. Mr. Brock writes annoucements. Stephanie advises Wille on Student Qouncil affairs. Mrs. Hamilton takes time out from a conference for a smile. Miss Judd gives pointers to a student. Gregory conducts a Senior Class meeting. 5 Joe Owes concentrates on the game Quarterback Jim Wynn confers with the coaches Cheerleaders keep the crowd excited Mr. Johnson keeps an eye on things Mrs. Bennett. Sandra Capers, and Brenda Reeves count money The band was a major source of spirit for booster club raffle 6 To Spirit Spirit is one of the keys to a good school year. Although Beach High School did not have one of its best years competitively, its students showed a lot of spirit. This was reflected by the cheerleaders, attendance at games and pep rallies, and a general feeling of harmony. We, of the Yearbook staff, feel that Beach really got it together in 73 Majorettes practice routine for upcoming game 7 Though injured. Phillip Williams came to cheer the team on Football team prepares for Johnson game To Unity Beach High School was known for its friendly atmos- phere. Not only were the stu- dents congenial; but also the faculty and staff. Unity is harmony ... the sense of being one. Thus the key of unity was one of the most important and prized keys. Listening to a lecture together Black and white together ;! Posing for a picture together Working together Eating together Cheering together Playing in the band together Testing together Working together Walking the halls together To Happiness Happiness . .. the expression that puts us among the good times, good friends, and a smile; which means Friday is nearing, the team is winning, three o’clock is coming and just plain old “goofing off”. As school days come to an end these are the things we remember as well as the things we learn in classes. Almost time to clock out. Trying to cut the lunch line Going home What’s going down Getting a quick game of basketball before being caught cutting class. To Knowledge aon Each member of the faculty and ad- ministation influenced the students tre- mendously. Together educators and stu- dents worked for perfection. Thus, the key that the faculty held was one of the most important. The key. which someday may bring success or failure, is the key of knowledge. Books motivate learning Fascinated by germs. 12 Mrs. Wynn solves a problem. Miss Noonan demonstrates with Oscar. Knowledge of the world begins at Beach. A prime source of knowledge is the library. Talking it over with Mr. Martin. Movie Projector stimulates the mind. Dr. Garvin gives a lecture. Mrs. Patterson aids students with a problem. The bull- dogs had a well-balanced attack which featured the hard driving of Willie Brunson, the rebounding of Aaron Davis, the defense of Joe Riddle and the hot shooting of Ray- nard Sills. The bench was another factor which played a large part in the ‘Dogs’ success as Coach El- lington used substitutes frequently. The road we take will lead us to success or failure. We do hope that all of our students will take the road to success for this is why we come here daily and give our time and energy. We all know that the road to failure will look like the easier road and be more inviting to travel, but let us not forget that success is not easy and is very hard to obtain. I am sure that we can all agree that things that come easy and are in abundance have very little value, but the things that are hard to obtain are in demand. As we work here at Alfred E. Beach High School let us give all we can in every area, everyday, to make each of our lives the best we possibly can. For what we do today, will determine what we will be tomorrow. Your stay here will be short, but life is long and we need to be well prepared for it. I do hope we are ready and have taken the road that will lead to success in this long life. If not, let us begin. May I also wish each of you a successful life and much happiness as you go out into this world. We want you to know that we will be here to serve you after you have gone. 88 Luck to all of you and especially the class of “1973. Assistant Enforcers Mr. Robert E. Blake Mr. Charles L. Johnson. Jr. Q. What is your philosophy on education? B. Education should be available for everyone, but to succeed, students would have to put forth an effort to receive direct benefits. J. Individual experiences, formal and informal, determine goals to achieve in life. Q. What changes would you like to see at Beach? B. For people to forget about Beach’s old reputation. J. More student-teacher involvement in activities and a change of the dress code. Q. What successes have been made at Beach since intergration? B. Beach has proved that intergration can be done and in the right way. J. The halls are quieter, the Beta Club established and Educational offering (electives) broadened. Q- What would you do if students stopped cutting? B. I'll be amazed and wouldn’t know what to do. J- Look for a new job. Q. What most of all would you like to tell the students? B. Education is self-learned and you get out any endeavor what you put into it. J. Students should take a more serious look at their talents and fit them into the demands of the future world. But our hearts we’ll leave behind. And all the happiness that we knew Will keep Golden Memories in our minds. We’ll cherish the day we met you. And honor the day we left; We’ll never in life forget you You’re a Golden Memory within yourself. There will always be those memories Which we have shared together From our games and mighty victories; We’ll keep those memories forever. We shall have long lasting memories That will keep us together where ever we go, And as long as we are apart. Our memories will keep us as one. Everyone knows the reasons we have the greatest school in Chatham County is be- cause our principals Mr. Brock, Mr. Blake, and Mr. Johnson, our teachers, our stu- dents, and our staff members. I am happy I was part of this great institution. Without the moral, spiritual, and physical support of the teachers and staff members, the task of compiling and completing the '73 Golden Bulldog would have been in- surmountable. My sincere thanks go to Mrs. Wynn, Mrs. A. E. Hamilton, Miss McPhail, Joe Nelson, Ned Gwinner, Loretta Pletcher, and Barbara Smith, for I learned at an early age that team work will pull a great load.” I would like to have all students join me in thanking Mrs. Heath for her great work with the annual staff. I do hope that this edition will show the improvement we wanted so much. Let us strive to make the next edition even better. 160
