Jr. His efforts have been untiring, his humor never failing, his helpfulness sincere; and to him, our teacher, our friend, we pay this tribute. BIOPERSE Mr. Charles L. Johnson. Jr. is a native Savannahian. He received his early education at St. Benedict’s Catholic School and received his high school diploma from Beach- Cuyler. He received his B.S. degree from Savannah State College and a M.L. degree from the University of Pitts- burgh. Mr. Johnson is at present instructor of physics at Alfred E. Beach High School. His is assistant line coach of football, and a member of the guidance and athletic committees. He is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He is married to the former Ernestine Pelote. JOHNSON, Advisors The rejuvenated MARCHING BULLDOG BAND under the direction of a new band director has made tremendous strides toward becoming the greatest unit in the history of the school. They adopted the fast step march made famous by Florida A M University and acquired a host of charming and talented majorettes. They made numerous trips with the football team and to observe college bands in action. Varsity Club The VARSITY CLUB was organized in 1953 when it was felt that athletes who had won a letter needed to be bonded together for a common purpose. The VARSITY CLUB seeks to promote, stimulate, and maintain throughout the school and community good sportsmanship and school spirit. The cluh also regulates the wearing of the coveted “B.” Each year this organization presents an athletic assembly program, when letters for the current year are presented and special awards are made. Reporters The NEW HOMEMAKERS of AMERICA is a national organization of pupils studying homemaking in junior and senior high schools in states having separate schools for Negroes. In 1955 there were 1,254 chapters with 52,956 members in 16 states. Now there are over 60,000. This is a non profit organization which has for its purpose the development of social qualities, the provision for wholesome recreational activities and the promotion of better home life for its members and their families. INDUCTION SAVE THE CLOTHES PROJECT THANKSGIVING DONATIONS The MASQUERS, dramatic organization of the school, has stimulated much interest in the field of dramatics. The membership has tripled in the last three years. In recent years the MASQUERS have presented such plays as DRUMS of DEATH. The HALL OF FAME was designed to honor these students whose ex- cellence might otherwise not be noted. Betty Jean Robinson and Benjamin Colbert were selected for their outstanding talent in art. Barbara Greene is Editor of the Golden Bulldog and James Wilson served as Editor-in-Chief of the Beacon. For their acting ability and cooperation, Van Buren Jones and Charlie Phillips were selected. Charlie was also business manager of the Golden Bulldog. Van Buren. an accomplished pianist is the composer of the Class Song. The outstanding chorus members were Willie Roundtree and Willie Burton whose voices brought much acclaim to the school. Margaret Sumpter, president of the Honor Society which is the top scholastic organization of Alfred E. Beach. CORORNAT FRANCES SMITH 10th Grade Winner ALEX JENKINS 11th Grade Winner GWENDOLYN BURTON . . . and now MISS BEACH!!! Before a capacity crowd, the students and faculty of Alfred E. Beach presented their first coronation ceremony. Four charming, talented, and studious young ladies from each grade level had been balloted on during the school day. Now, every one was waiting eagerly for the announcement of the winners. After a short program of entertainment the twelve charming girls breezed down the aisles of the auditorium to the stage. Vernon Smith, master of ceremonies, introduced each contestant as she ascended the platform. Otha L. Douglass, principal, announced Ida Matthews as the 10th grade winner and Gwendolyn Burton as the 11th grade winner. Each received a tear-drop pearl necklace. Then he held the audience in suspense as he announced the new Miss Beach, Charlesetta Ferguson. On behalf of the entire school, Mr. Douglass presented Miss Beach a gold wrist watch emblematic of her title. Mrs. Marie Ellison presented her a beautiful gold cross from the P.T.A. The runners-up for Miss Beach were Safronia Lawson, Ruth Williams, and Judith Robinson. lOlh Grade With “Fashions Through the Ages” as their theme, the Alfred E. Beach High School student body celebrated their homecoming, October 16, 1958. Each float depicted an era of fashions. There were “Fashions Into Space,” “Colonial Fashions,” “The Gay 90’s,” and many more. “Futuristic Fashions” was the winning float, entered by the 11-5, 11-6, 11-7, and 11-8 classes. Featured in the parade was the newly crowned Miss Beach, Charlesetta Ferguson. Her attendants were Gwendolyn Burton and Ida Matthews. That night at the football game climaxing the days activities, Miss Beach watched the mighty BULLDOGS crush Center High. 32-6. miss Beach Lovely, talented, and charming, these are the characteristics of our Miss Beach, who is none other than Charlesetta Fergerson. Miss Fergerson participates in many school activities. Among these are Kappa Tri-Hi-Y, where she serves as, secretary; secretary of the Inter- national Friendship; assistant secretary of the National Honor Society; feature editor of the Beacon; and a member of the Excelsiors. With her various activities, she still finds time to participate in such organizations as the NAACP Youth Council, and the El Dorodo Debs Social Club. She is a member of Saint Paul C.M.E. where she plays an active part in the Church’s Christian Youth Fellowship and Sunday School. Upon graduation she plans to attend college. Her tentative major will be laboratory technology with a minor in business education.
