56 THE GOLDEN BULLDOG Published by the Students ALFRED E. BEACH HIGH SCHOOL 3001 Hopkins Street Savannah, Georgia DEDICATION In recognition of our profound appreciation for the untiring effort that Mr John H. Law has put forth to develop the Hi-Y movement at Alfred E. Beach, we dedicate the fifth edition of the COLDEN bulldoc. Mr. Law is a member of the Social Science Department of Alfred E. Beach High School, active in civic and religious affairs of the city, and an ardent supporter of the Hi-Y movement. Mr. Law is a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church where he is director of the Altar Boys. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. In September, 1931, Mr. Law organized his first local Hi-Y at Beach-Cuyler. Since then he has been a moving spirit in organizing chapters in other high schools. At present he is advisor of the Delta and Sigma Chapters of the Hi-Y. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE To the Seniors of 1956: It seems but a short time since you embarked upon your high school career. The time has passed very swiftly leaving its imprint upon you educationally, socially and spiritually: Time in itself, is not such an impor- tant factor, but-the way it is used is all important. When you entered Beach, you were beginning life. It has been said that this is the most important part of your life, because this is the time habits are formed..But the period in which your ideas and ideals are formed seem to be even more important. H. W. Beecher says, “It is the ideals with which you go forth to measure things, determine the nature, so far as you are concerned, of everything you meet.” Has your high school training enabled you to form, the right ideals? Have you anchored deep into your souls the worth while things of life? The prayers and best wishes of the Principal and Faculty go with you wherever you go. Sincerely yours, 0. L. Willie Wilson Nathaniel Wright Omega Hi-Y Shirley Irving Lester Dozier CLASS SONG By Euleta Smith and Minnie Ruth Smith Our hearts are full of sadness Our eyes are filled with tears We hate to leave you, dear Beach High, After all these happy years. We’re thanking all our teachers For the way they’ve made us turn, Through all the toil and tear drops We have never failed to learn. We love you, praise, adore you, How much you’ll never know; We think of you with joyful hearts, And will forever more. So may God bless and keep you Forever in His eyes; You’ve played your part, in our our heart, For you really are our prize. CHOMJS To our parents so kind and patient We now give a rousing cheer, For the years they’ve stood beside us To make tasks easy to bear. And as we leave you, dear Beach High, We look back with tear-filled eyes; So we pledge our hearts to you, old Alma Mater true, Farewell, Beach High, farewell. HISTORY As we entered the “Golden Gates” of Alfred E. Beach High on September 8, 1953 we were taking our most important steps toward obtaining our high school education. Although the time may have seemed long, actually these past three years flew by rapidly. There were a number of important events that oc- curred during our three year period at Beach High. Some of these high school memories will remain with us throughout our entire lives. None of us will ever forget the growling Bulldogs of “53-54” as they won numerous victories for our school nor shall we forget the “Parakees” when they appeared on the Annual Harvest of Talent. The audience gave them a tre- mendous round of applause as they left the stage. We were thrilled when Gloria Murray won the title for the tenth grade attendant to Miss Beach. Of course, we did not know she would receive an even higher honor in the years to come. Other memories of “53-54” would include the exceptional basketball team and the “Faculty Follies.” Remember how Principal Douglas performed along with the female chorus line and the “Mutt-Jeff”’ tap dance by Mr. Wright and Mr. Harris. The very enjoyable production of “Stagline” was presented by the Dramatics Department in “54.” After watching our school mates perform with professional ease during the entire play we looked with great antici- pation toward the following year when the Dramatics Department would again present one of their superb productions. As we moved into our junior year, time seemed to have taken on a little more speed toward our senior year. Julia Tolbert won the title for 11th grade attend- arit to Miss Beach. We were very proud and happy for her to receive this honor. In November of “54” the students who had main- tained an average of 85 and above during our tenth grade year were admitted and inducted into the Beach High Chapter of the National Honor Society. This was indeed an honor to those who made the Honor Society and an inspiration to our fellow classmates. Even though Woodville defeated Beach with a 19-0 victory for the city championship, the school spirit still remained strong. Somehow we were able to endure the slangs our rivals gave us due to our defeat. The basketball team was still going strong as Rich- ard Denny became the second three letter athlete for dear old Beach. They won the first Annual Regional Tournament after an excellent display of their basket- ball talent. The delightful comedy of “55” entitled “Papa Was A Preacher” was another production by the Dramatics Department which included a great cast under the excellent direction of Mrs. E. P. Law. The auditorium of our school was filled with roars of humorour laugh- ter from the beginning to the end of the play. It was really a success! The “Operetta of 55” which was entitled “Drink Water Sanatorium” is another everlasting memory which was performed beautifully by the chorus under the splendid direction of Mr. P. J. Smalls and Mrs. E. P. Law. The gay colored costumes and the beautiful background scenery which was painted by members of the Art Department with Mrs. S. P. Waters supervising, gave the stage a magnificent setting along with the radi- ant faces of the participants. Our senior year which began September 6, 1955, finally came. This is the year we had waited so patiently for. Time certainly played the leading role for us as we looked forward to June 1, 1956, graduation day. The first important flight of our education journey had been completed; we would receive our high school diplomas for the work we had-accomplished during our twelve years of schooling. At the beginning of our “55-56” term, the Driver Education Program was introduced and added to our school curriculum. This gave many students with the desire to drive an opportunity to learn all the funda- mentals and safety percautions of driving. The auto- mobile for the course was donated by the local Dearing Chevrolet Company. Mr. F. R. Glover was assigned to instruct the students who registered for this course. The “Pre-Halloween Carnival” was another enjoy- able event that was held in our school gymnasium dur- ing our senior year. The “Ugly Man Contest” an inter- esting feature of this affair went over big. The ugliest man was crowned during the Carnival; the votes of the students had been counted prior to the Carnival. Other features of the Carnival were games, fortune telling, dancing and the presentation of the Male Chorus Line. This line was composed of male faculty members, as usual, they stole the show. On Thanksgiving night our hearts were filled with joy as we won the city championship from Woodville. As our football team ran up and down the gridiron they had a strong determination to win back the vic- tory that our school had long been noted for. This triumph brought our school a 14-6 victory. During the last few months of our stay at Beach High we were in a constant rush. There were the senior meetings, senior expenses, ordering of the rings and senior programs that kept most of us busy. As we finished our final school duties we were then able to feel relieved. Although our life at Beach included much hard studying, we were still able to enjoy many pleasant events that occurred during those wonderful years. The memories of our “dear ole Alma Mater” will be cher- ished by all the seniors of the “56” graduating class. We are thankful to the entire faculty for the guid- ance they gave us, and as we part from our dearly beloved school we wish for the future seniors much success and happiness throughout their last year at Alfred E. Beach. SUPERLATIVES TALLEST SHORTEST FATTEST THINNEST BEST LOOKING CUTEST Arthur Hunter—Betty Bright CLASS PET MOST POPULAR MOST COMICAL BEST PERSONALITY . . . MOST AMBITIOUS .... So let’s all see that which has not happened yet. We see first of all, those Grads who have not left our Alma Mater. Behind the principal’s desk, is the past president of the Student Council, Eugene Hagins with Lonnie Wiggins at the typewriter. Jackie Tyson is instructing Family Relationship in a modernized classroom that has recently been completed. In the gymnasium a dream has come true, for Euleta Smith is now in charge of the girl’s Physical Education classes. The ever great Bulldogs are proud of the winning streak they are having with their coach, a former team captain, Russell Ellington. For these Grads, there are no barriers—Monta- gue Denny, President of the United States has had a very successful term and is thinking about a second. We are extremely proud to say that Caleb Weston, now a Georgia Congressman, is doing much for the United States tax situation. William Johnson, Edward Days and Thomas Reddick are stars among the “Big Five” on the renown basketball team “The Harlem All-Stars,” who recently returned from a European tour. Bobby White and Earl Davis, former Bulldog players, have just signed a contract with the Washington Red Legs. The Crystal Ball reveals that Earthell Beckett, Rose Bryant, and Emily Lavendar have opened The B. B. L. Dance Studio in Detroit, the word is that they are giving Arthur Murray quite a time. John Maddox is now manager of the Moulin Rouge assisted by Daniel Harris and James Stewart. Levi Moore’s band is giving previously famous bands a “run for their money,” included in his music makers are Ramsey Adkins on trumpet, Comer Flynn on sax, Joseph Johnson at the piano and Drucilla Holmes as their vovalist. Lillian Williams is replacing Liberace at the Copcabana. In the field of research, Thurman Sanders is beginning a completion of Einsteins’ work with Leon Banks, his associate. Benjamin Sommersett and Morris Sams are now instructing Physics at Howard University. Mary Arnold is a consultant with the New York Social Department, while her “sister,” Alfreda Anderson is head nurse at the Daniels Memorial Hospital. John Gaynus is a col- umnist for the New York Times, while Dandy Tay- lor is editor-in- chief of the New York Herald. The Saturday Evening Post latest issue is filled with many illustrations by Katherine Murphy and Harry Owens. Mary Hippert is the new manager of the Conrad Hilton Hotel. At Saks, Queen Esther Blake has secured a position as buyer for this concern. In Hollywood, Barbarba Smith is starring in the Broadway hit “Cleopatra,” while Georgia McPherson, producer at MGM, has just released their latest production in which the cast included film stars Gloria Murray, Virginia Smith and Jakie Miller. Joseph Walker, Harold Cody, Frank Dickerson and William Eason, known as the Para- keets have placed the Drifters’ names in the fine print on the personal appearance bills. Leroy Lock- hart is starring with Sidney Pointer in a RKO production. You know that Allen Sykes heads this movie house, with Maxine Butler as his number one talent scout. It has been said that Miss Butler is trying to sign Julia Tolbert for their coming production. Andrew Phoenix, Joe Polite, and Rob- ert Jordan are opening with a new comedy routine at Ciro’s within the next month. Lonnie Morrell is working with Rochester on his new comedy show, she has been a booming success. There are many other Beachites who are doing great things to uphold our school traditions, we are proud of all of you and we hope that our Crystal Ball is not misleading us. For the first dozen years we have run quite a race But there’s college in store so we can’t change our pace. For some this will be the sad end of school days But the learning goes on as you learn of life’s ways. We wonder as proudly we march down the aisle O’er which road we will move as we run the next mile.
