Prior to reporting aboard CDR WELLS was executive officer of the USS POINT DEFIANCE QLSD 319. He was born 10 July 1925,in Philadelphia, Penn. and was commissioned 20 February 1946, receiving a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the Uni- versity of Texas. After earning 'another BS degree, this time in Elec- tronics from the Massachusetts Institute of Tech- nology, CDR WELLS went to the USS SPOKANE QCLAA 1209 as a electronics officer. From 1955 to 1957 he served aboard the USS W. C. LAWE CDD 7635 'as engineer and operations officer. Prior to re- porting to the LAWE, CDR WELLS earned his Mas- ter's Degree in Physics at the US Navy Postgradu- ate school. CDR WELLS also served on the staff of Commander Mine Force Atlantic and at the US Naval Ordnance to POINT DEFIANCE, he earned his Doctorate in Physics at Stanford in 1962. CDR WELLS holds the Victory Medal iWorld War ID, American Theater, Navy Occupation Service Medal with European Clasp, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Two Bronze Stars, and National Defense Service Medal. Speaking as an oracle of officialdom, Command- ing Officer of CUNNINGHAM, I declare that the ship and the men the reader sees pictured herein have served gallantly, effectively, and professionally in the van against competent military forces serving governments opposed to freedom of the individual and 'specifically interested in destroying American lives, American property, and the American Dream of international peace and prosperity. They have roamed the Western Pacific with unswerving pur- pose, toughness, and dignity that is typified by the cold grey steel of the ship herself. As the person inside the oracle, my thoughts often rest on the magnificent ship unity that developed during the cruise. It showed sometimes in trouble and stress, and sometimes in triumph and good cheer, and it was great to be a part of it. It was a most memorable cruise for me. After leaving in early April, I miss the excitement and challenge of destroyer life and you individual men in CUNNINGHAM'S crew. I know that as you continue t work hard, play hard, and use your time well, it will add to the lore and achievement record of a fine ship. The best of luck and smooth sailing to each of you. In June 1948 he enlisted in the Navy and was admitted to the US Naval Academy on a Fleet Ap- pointment in 1950. He was graduated with the class of 1954 and his subsequent tours included duty in USS COLAHAN 4 DD 6587, USS TWINING CDD 5405, MINRON 11, and USS WILHOITE QDER 3975. Ashore he attended the six-month Mine Warfare Staff Officer's Course, US Naval Post-Graduate school, George Washington University, and the US Naval War College Command and Staff course. At the Naval Academy for two years, he taught tube and transistor electronics, computer logic, motors and generators, and measurement techniques. He holds a BS degree from the Naval Academy, a BS Clilngineering Electronicsb from the Naval Post- graduate school, and an MA CPersonnel Administra- tion? from George Washington University. He is a qualified Mine Countermeasures Officer and is qualified for command of destroyers. - LCDR SUTHERLAND wears the Navy Commenda- tion Medal with Combat UVM, China Service Medal CExtendedl, National Defense Medal with Bronze Star, Vietnam, Service Medal with Bronze Star, and Navy Expert Pistol Medal. He reported aboard CUNNINGHAM in July 1966. For me this cruise was characterized by a happy phenomenon not often enjoyed by destroyer XO's-- a truly stable crew. Some sailors reported aboard and a few left for other duty stations, but over all everyone had a chance to learn his shipmates' names and to measure their mettle as seamen. It might even be half-jokingly said that you were all on board long enough for us to straighten out your pay records. Some old timers would say 'That's no joke, son!! But it was a good feeling to see familiar faces daily, people you knew you could trust, who made sacrifices on your behalf, who be- lieved Cas you didb that each had to pull his share of the load to achieve the end result--a fighting ship of the line. Thus it will be with real regret that I see a goodimany of you fade off as the ship enjoys her home port stay. 'One year from now over fifty percent of the crew will be new. Those of you who will be gone will not be forgotten. And those of you who remain will be the nucleus about which CUNNINGHAM'S fighting spirit will be maintained and fanned alive again in another deployment to Asian waters--steel men who sail in steel ships.
