Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1969 volume:

The class of 1969 sincerely dedicates this book to a man who has shown deep concern for all-not only as the Senior High Student Council Advisor but as a teacher, friend, and companion. He has helped plan our activities throughout our school years at Alfred-Almond and we deeply appreciate it. For adding both enjoyment and meaning to our education, we thank you Mr. Stillman. 4 Man is but what he makes himself. And you have made yourself great in our eyes. PHYLLIS MATTISON Elementary and Junior High Guidance Counselor 11 Rex Ahrens The only guy, it seems, brave enough to take on Physics as a Junior! He was an electronic whiz at vocational school and has be- come a welcome addition to our soccer team. Rex sure can liven up an eighth period study hall, too! Barbara Auer With green eyes, light brown hair, and very little height, Barb has been active in Drama Club, Horizon Club, and the Senior Play. Her interests include danc- ing, reading, and music, while her dislikes range from stuck up people to lima beans. Carol Braack Carol pursues an interest in music; she takes piano lessons and is reknowned for being able to reach those high notes on the flute. Everyone unanimously agrees she is a giggler and is always ready to share a laugh. Interested in typing she plans to follow a secretarial career. 12 Carl Burrow Of the enthusiastic type — Carl goes for most sports; wrest- ling, track and hunting. His looks are very deceiving to any girl who can't help but feel sorry for sad looking boys at times. Carl claims his main hang up is that of being too short. Nancy Butler Faced with the task of being literary editor of this remarkable edition, Nancy single handedly brought out cries of wild enthu- siasm (?) from the Senior Class with her weird questionaires. Nancy is known for cramming up to the very last minute. Marilyn Cameron Our representative to Ghana for the past year and a half, Marilyn is back with us for the rest of her senior year. She was not forgotten during her absence because of frequent (?) correspon- dence. As the first Feature Editor of the Flashlite, she did a tremen- dous job. 13 Suzanne Cappadonia Cute, dark hair, dark eyes, and pierced ears. These adjec- tives are descriptive of Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy. She is quite often hilarious but can be very sincere. Groovy but kind of weird, this girl likes Sidney Poitier and her mom's lasagne. William Cleveland An easy guy to make friends with, Bill is described as being sensitive and a dreamer. He is interested in old cars, guns, and the guitar. He dislikes strict teachers and people who talk be- hind other's backs. Ray Carter Ray's always easy to spot on a soccer field, just look for his generous thatch of curly hair! His main interests are sports and driv- ing his (48) Pontiac. Ray will long be remembered for his great sense of humor. 14 Ethel Coddington Light hair and a bright smile can be identified with Ethel. A strong individual, she refused to fill out any bothersome forms for this write-up. She is always able to add her help and comments. Michele Costello Michele is a real knockout with her long blonde hair and devastating smile. She has a great capacity for understanding and is willing to listen to anyone. She professes a great interest in lepre- chauns, eclipses, and loves the finer things in life. Carol Daniels Carol claims the most unique interest in the Senior Class - she loves antique cars. She has a quiet disposition with future hopes of becoming a nurse. She will be remembered for stalling the Driver Ed. car on hills. 15 Kathleen Dungan As Rose in our Senior Play, Kathleen gave a good example of her acting talent. She also enjoys activities such as sewing, reading and singing. One of the few stu- dents who daily brave the bus ride to Horned Vocational School, she is taking a course in Office Prac- tice. Harry Drake Harry may be one of the quieter members of the class but it is not because he is at a loss for things to say. As a part of the cast of the Senior play, he did a superb portrayal of a doctor who was on the team of bad guys. He enjoys hunting and is interested in dramatics. Pete Eisenhardt From sports to circulating Alcens, Pete is a very versatile person. A handsome addition to our class, he claims his dislikes are school lunches , and squeaky shoes. His performance in the Senior Play was sensational. He says his hang-up is worrying. 16 Gary Elwell One of our vocational stu- dents, Gary hates getting up in the morning, especially on Mon- day. He enjoys writing poetry, carpentry, and short wave radios. As Mr. Foster, he was the hero of the Senior Play. Gary is one who is not afraid to say what he thinks is right. Marshall Flint Marshall is one of the happiest people around. He enjoys good humor and manages to even have fun while taking the sciences. He handles bricks and lab cars for Mr. Gerace with great dexterity. He manages to bring good cheer to everyone in his immediate vicin- ity. i Jay Evans Jay hates dull moments, but there never are any when he is around. A wrestler and member of the track team, he likes hunt- ing, fishing, and parties. He has a super power (he can wiggle his ears) which he only uses in times of dire need. 17 Dale Freeland Active in Cross Country, Ex- plorers. and girl watching. Dale's interests also include racing bikes, and water skiing. He dislikes people bossing him and his pet peeve are guys who think they are tough and are not. Terry Fraser With an impish grin, Terry possesses an off beat sense of humor. He takes fiendish delight in teasing but people find it hard to stay mad at him for any length of time. Known as a movie projec- tionist in the Alfred area, he has suffered a great deal of teasing. Cheryl Friend Our blonde cheerleader, Cherie is a girl of diversified tastes. Tall and independent, she enjoys being in the midst of things. She loves excitement, therefore she attends many ski parties and is often seen riding her steed. Cherie is fondly described as friendly. 18 Francis Gay nor Francis is hard-working and has always been willing to help in the class projects. He chooses his friends wisely and is ever loyal to them. He has survived the perils of Bus 24 and has obtained valu- able vocational training. His future looks very promising. James Flynn Jim comes to us from Bloom- ington, Indiana for his senior year. His interests include sports and girls; while his dislikes range from homework, snobs, and the lack of a football team. Jim's pet peeves are dead towns and “dead” people. 19 Dwight Gertz Always prepared to give a well-based opinion, Dwight puts forth a most convincing argument and for that reason very few have any desire to oppose him. He enjoys sailing and is a member of the swimming team. He will long be remembered for pulling 100 on his World History Regents. Christine Gibbs Cute and generous, Chris is one of the friendliest people around. She was one of the first of us to obtain her license. Chris is interested in sports and has proven this as our girl's bowling champion last year. Terri Gifford Terri is a sports enthusiast who particularly enjoys bowling. She is a member of the girls' bowling team and can often be found at the lanes with Carol. She endures teasing in Driver Ed. and a more sincere person would be hard to find. Judy Graham Another member of our voca- tional crew, Judy has been active as a Future Homemaker of Ameri- ca. She is a faithful friend and has great patience; sometimes able to calm the livelier of her friends. 20 Lucille Kellogg A famous track star, Lucille is most often found to be laughing. She is usually in the center of things and was a great asset as assistant director of the Senior Play. She co-lead our class through the stupendous magazine sale and still has time to be Alcen business editor. Jerry Kernan Jerry loves the great outdoors, and enjoys a good time whenever and wherever he can find it. He built some fantastic scenery for the Senior Play and diligently repaired it when it collapsed. Jerry shows a profound interest in humans (female type, that is.) Holly Horton In the morning. Holly soothes our ears with her voice drifting over the P.A. system. Our super cheerleader, she is one of the most vivacious girls in our class. She displays great leadership, in her role as our Student Council President. 21 Ellen Lewis Ellen is a most sympathetic listener and a responsible person. She loves to drive and endures much teasing about finding inter- sections. She is an active partici- pant in girl's sports and a willing worker in anything she under- takes. Sandra Knudsen Sandy has been a capable Candy Striper and is always ready for any emergency. After survi- ving the rigorous initiation of the Future Homakers of America, she enjoys devising similar fates for the following group of initiates. One of her pet peeves is people who mispronounce her name. Mary Lindeman Mary's secret (?) desire is to become an English teacher. One of her outstanding attributes is her tremendous personality, so she could easily keep her students interested. She can be influenced by the name Dustin Hoffman. 22 Gene McGraw Gene is always seen cruising around Alfred on his classic cycle. Serious but fun-loving, he picks his own friends and is always ready to help them out. His idol is Tiny from Oakland; he can really ride. Bob Love Bob really does have a serious side, but it is usually hidden under his well-known sarcasm and witty remarks. His fantastic abili- ty to tease girls has made him a popular member of the class. De- pending on the season. Bob can be found on the tennis courts or in the pool. Carolyn McCormick Carolyn's interests focus on Rushford Lake in the summer — she says she prefers lifeguards. She was often seen assembling costumes for the Senior Play. She is forever chauffering brothers, sisters, and turtles (?) around whenever she can get the car. Her greatest ambition is to drive a tractor-trailer. 23 Dave Mueller Dave is a member of the Na- tional Honor Society and presi- dent of the Drama Club. He dis- likes driver's tests (all three of them). Hoping one day to find a fountain pen that works, he is forever moaning that the Alcen and Senior year are going to give him ulcers. Doug Morgenfeld Doug is tall, tanned, hand- some, and rarely fully awake. He's a great asset to the swimming team, tennis team, and the Con- servation Department. Accom- plishments include achievement of Eagles Rank in Scouts and County Champ in Tennis Singles for two years. Rita Neeley Rita's soft voice and quiet nature sharply contrast with her fire red hair. She has a quick temper, but forgets the cause of anger twice as fast. Her ambition in life is to become a successful housewife with a house full of contented children. 24 Michael Obuhanich Yearning to become a profes- sional athlete, Mike has proven his powers in basketball and baseball. He was our class president, Alcen sports editor, stage manager for the Senior Play, and a member of the Student Council. Mike claims his hero is Donald Duck. Jim Ninos Pound for pound, he is pro- bably the best wrestler in Alfred- -Almond. His independent spirit and great talent for having fun are something to be admired. He managed to become the most unconventional and original de- bater in Mr. Torrey's economics class. Dave Ormsby Dave is identified by his flash- ing red hair as he speeds down the basketball court or whips down the soccer field. He has saved our team in many games by his mag- nificent athletic feats. He is often quiet but can keep classes lively when he wants to do so. 25 Gary Ormsby Gary is one of our great athle- tic Seniors. He has played both varsity basketball and soccer. Gary's interests include cars, hunting, and skiing and he can be found smiling most of the time. Pamela Palmiter Naturally blonde, Pam reflects this in her warm bright person- ality and boundless energy. A National Honor Society member and a hard worker, she is always willing to help out. She can be found most often in the vicinity of the post office. Melodie Palmiter Band, chorus. Drama Club, and the Senior Play are a few of the many outlets for Maud's never ending supply of energy. Her interest in people is charac- terized by her inability to hold a grudge. Her calm smile is no disguise for her vivacity and some- times impulsive nature. 26 Douglas Place Doug is the most notorious member of the Senior Class. He's really intelligent but doesn't like people to know it. He loves to harass Mr. Gerace in Physics class and can always be counted on for hilarious remarks. Oder can't stand garrulous people but he likes cartoons. Susie Randolph Susie is talkative, giggly and full of enthusiasm for life in general. Her frantic last minute cramming for history, always with good results and high marks never failed to amaze us. She has been active in F.T.A., on the Alcen, and Drama Club. Penny Powers Penny is forever willing to listen to anyone's problems with a sympathetic ear. She is wicked on a soccer field or driving around in her blue bomb . Showing great school spirit, she is quite often found cheering in the crowd. 27 Lin Seip Cheerful and vivacious are the most appropriate words that can be used to describe Lin. Although she has a violent dread of spiders, she is funloving and is usually surrounded by happiness. Her little known (?) obession is Paul Newman. Kim Rounds Curly headed Kim declares that her pet peeve is kinky hair. She is the envy of every straight haired girl in school and vice versa. Although she is known for unusual happenings (like hitting a deer with the Driver Education car), she also can be quite serious. Barb Saltzer Barb is active in Drama Club, Horizon Club, and the newspaper staff. She describes herself as a dreamer; she is always smiling and makes a lot of sense when she talks. Barb likes tall blue eyed blondes and dislikes getting up mornings. 28 Mary Shanley Mary is independent and al- ways on the go. As a member of our F.H.A. chapter, she is also district secretary of the organiza- tion. Mary always comes up with some solution to every problem, but the present draft system tends to put a damper on her social life. Stewart Sharrett Vivid blue eyes characterize this master of dry wit. He has been active on both the track, and cross country teams (and has re- marks for all occasions). He is famous for assembling and dis- assembling 7 different cars so far. His probable career is that of a great car designer, although he may insist on building them, too. Mike Sherman The outdoor type, Mike en- joys hunting, especially when it involves taking a vacation from school. Seldom heard from and less often seen; he is well-known for his abilities on the baseball diamond. In the past he has been seen darting back and forth on a tractor for one of many F.F.A. projects. Pattee Stearns Pattee works hard on every- thing she endeavors to do. This year she bravely took on the responsibility of Alcen Editor. A real sports enthusiast, she joins the endless numbers who dislike gym notebooks. She will long be remembered for her portrayal of Mrs. Edwards in the Senior Play. Barb Snyder Though good-looking, Barb in- sists that she is too short. Exhibit- ing extraordinary stamina, she has survived frantic Alcen deadlines. Barb is sensational on the soccer field. Ping pong champion of gym class last year, she is fun to be around because she keeps moments exciting. Randy Stockweather Interested in sports, old cars, and hunting, Randy will long be remembered for his curly hair and his crude comments. Never at a loss for words, Randy was a great asset to the class of '69's spirit. 30 James Tobin Sometimes quiet, but with a sense of humor, Jim likes to make people laugh and has a tendency to dislike pessimists. Jim's pet peeve is Physics class. Asa mem- ber of the Senior and All-County bands, he enjoys music. He will long be remembered as an art dealer from Paris. Lloyd White Lloyd is one of these people who is always welcome wherever they go. Well known for his fast convertible and a tree-trimmer, he is also a hard worker in class projects. Lloyd attends the Voca- tional School in Hornell so is not around for all the action at school. Susan Tucker Short and lively, Susan was a prompter in the Senior Play. She was always ready with a good joke to pep everyone up. She outdid all of us by slyly taking Driver's Ed in summer school and obtaining her night license and is one of the great cat lovers. 31 Greg Young Greg rarely takes life seriously and likes pretty girls and fast cars. He has athletic prestige and has been seen at various times on the swimming, tennis, and cross coun- try teams. His wheels take up a good deal of the rest of his time. Greg will long be remembered for sheer cheerfulness if nothing else. Mike Wood Mike fits the description a gentleman and scholar. He has been active in sports, and this year went through the struggle of being art editor for the Alcen with Gene. He enjoys a good conversation or argument. He can most often be seen driving his panel truck or loafing in the art room. 32 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS L. Kellogg (V. Pres.), M. Obuhanich (Pres.), M. Lindeman (Sec.). VOCATIONAL STUDENTS Learning while doing, the vocational students prepare for the future by taking various technical courses from secretarial and cosmotology to auto mechanics and elec- tronics. Similar to on the job training, their invaluable ex- periences will lead to future success. 33 SENIOR PLAY 'Aaaaaaaagh, the suspense built up and a fairly decent Senior Play was produced. 34 UNDERCLASSMEN First row: H. Young, D. Stuart, K. Weitzel. Second row: J. Mills, B. Reynolds, D. Lorrow. Third row: L. Soule, B. Tuttle, J. Funk. Fourth row: L. Turner, M. Rulon, K. Pierce. Fifth row: K. Almeter, P. Powers, D. With their oversized egos acquired via their still new class rings and superiority on many Field Days, the Juniors strive to be the best. They not only outnumber the Seniors but also attack them with favorite taunts. ( Seniors reek. The Senior class is a lemon. ) They were the champions of the magazine sale and can hardly wait till next year when they will have Senior superiority. 36 First row: G. Benson, C. Bloomquist, D. After reviving the Junior High plays and presenting an unforgettable demonstration in makeup, they raised the class prestige by winning the Junior High Field Day. Top to bottom: R. McGraw (President), J. Holland (V. Pres.), B. Hanks (TreasJ, B. Calkins (Sec.). 39 First row: G. Norton. S. Wietgrefe, K. Palmiter, C. Snyder, M.Tapp.S. Tucker, W. Smith. Second row: A. Rawasy, C. After giving up their leadership in the Junior High for the lowliest spot in the Senior High, the Freshmen are trying to make themselves a class of distinction. Al- though looked down upon and often ignored, they adjusted easily to the faster pace of high school. They refused to con- form to the mediocrity of being Freshmen and will thoroughly enjoy condescending to the next Freshmen Class. S. Tucker (Red Cross Rep.), C. Funk (Sec.), L. Fraser (V. Pres.), H. Smith, K. Weitzel, D. Rusinko, R. Lewis. SOCCER The team, under the first year direction of Mr. Kartsaklis, finished in a tie for second place in the Class C league with a record of 3 3-2. Then after being snowed out in the first attempt they lost in a play off to Scio for the sectional berth. The team was greatly helped by the efforts of four Seniors who had never played the sport before. Next years team has needed experience but will be effected by the loss of 9 mighty seniors. First row: S. Weitgrefe, W. Beasley, G. Norton, P. Curran, C. Butler, K. Evans. Second row: T. Calkins, M. Aftuck, C. Meyers, E. Jekel, M. Cushing, G. Snyder, M. Ninos. Third row: J. Herrick, R. Gorton, L. Herrick, R. Davison. One of the most successful sports in the school for many years, the team enjoyed a winning season this year under Coach Moore. The team sent Bruce Tuttle to the State meet and with the loss of only one senior has great potenetial for the coming years. First row: D. Smith, G. Reid, D. Greene, E. Ide, A. Clancy, M. Harvey. Second row: T. Turner, M. Matison, E. Butts, S. Wheeler, T. Wakefield, G. Brutsman. Third row: J. Lemoine, A. Woodworth, T. Dobson, J. Schwartz, T. Giedlin, W. Perry. 63 TENNIS First row: P. Lewis, P. Curran, L. Clare, J. Ninos, D. Gray, A. Love. Second row. R. Love, M. Speca, G. Young, G. Clare, D. Place, D. Ormsby, D. Morgenfeld, R. Carter, Mr. Moore (coach). One of the youngest sports in the school, the team under the direction of Coach Moore, had a successful season. They sent Doug Morgenfeld to the sectionals in the singles competition and Doug, along with five other seniors and a host of underclassmen, will be back this year hoping to improve their record and send more boys to the section- als. 64 Kneeling: J. Ninos, (Manager), K. Evans, D. Freeland, J. Ninos, C. Reynolds, M. Ninos, M. Aftuck, S. Cornell. Standing: Coach Lloyd, F. Flynn, D. Higgins, R. McGraw, J. Evans, R. Cornell, C. Burrow, S. Smith. After bringing home three straight Class C champion trophies the A-A grapplers got off to a poor start this year and will not have the chance to repeat as champs. Loaded with experience and some good young freshmen, the team under Coach Lloyd hopes to come on strong in the second half of the season and knock off a few of the major contenders. The loss of some good seniors will effect next years team greatly, but this sport should continue to be one of the strongest in A-A. WRESTLING Kneeling: L. Clare, P. Curran. Standing: Coach Lloyd, R. Mc- Cormick, R. Stock weather, J. Kull, J. Giles. 65 First row: M. Jekel (Manager), B. Pulow (Manager). Second row: D. Morgenfeld, B. Love, T. Fraser, G. McGraw, A. Butler, B. Schwartz, Coach Codispoti. Third row: B. Snyder (Manager), L. McGraw, M. Cushing, E. Jekel, G. Dale, J. Funk, G. Ordiway, L. Fraser (Manager), P. Carter (Manager), B. Lynn (Manager), M. Palmiter (Manager), P. Palmiter (Manager). SWIMMING Another one of the newer sports in the school, the “fish have really come along in the three years they've been together. Coach Codispoti, with a team composed mostly of experienced lettermen, hopes to improve on last years 7-7 record. The loss of Duncan Gray was a big blow, but the remaining Seniors and underclassmen should make it a very successful season. 66 TRACK First row: D. Stasiuk, F. Beckhorn, J. Mills, J. Evans, C. Burrow, J. Herbert, K. Ordway, B. Lockwood, B. Tuttle, P. Stasiuk. Second row: Mr. McEvoy (coach), R. Stockweather, D. Winters, P. Eisenhardt, G. McGraw, D. Stuart, R. Austin, D. Higgins, J. Eddy, R. Wakefield, R. Davison, K. Lorow. The team had a successful season last year and with the loss of only three seniors should be much stronger this year. With Randy Stockweather and Bruce Tuttle there is good strength in the distance events. Carl Burrow should be strong in the sprints, and with a strong group in the field events, A-A could easily bring home a couple of trophies this year. Contribution by many a mighty senior will strengthen the team immensely. 67 Kneeling: S. Monroe, (Manager), C. Stewart, M. Speca, B. Hanks, D. Reid, J. Schwartz, (Manager). Standing: Coach Moore, D. Lorow, G. Ormsby, J. Norton, D. Allen. D. Place, D. Stuart. M. Obuhanich, D. Ormsby, J. Speca, (Manager). Hoping to improve on last years record almost at the halfway point the cagers have already equalled the winning output of last year. Under the ageless Coach Moore (except for his sparce gray hair and ulcers) this team could go a long way. Lots of potential and spirit and a few breaks, could put them into the sectionals and maybe give them a trip to Rochester. With only four seniors Coach (Adolf Rupp) Moore looks to next year and even a better season, but the loss of these seniors will be noticed. VARSITY BASKETBALL 68 J-V BASKETBALL Loaded with freshmen and a couple experienced sophomores Coach McEvoy should experience another winning campaign. With not too much height, but a lot of speed and desire. Coach McEvoy looks forward to next year with all his experienced freshmen. Kneeling: J. Schwartz, (Manager), T. Calkins, G. Snyder, M. Parker, M. Moses, S. Lorow, J. Speca, (Manager). Standing: Coach McEvoy, M. Winters, A. Love, B. Palmer, D. Smith, R. Austin, M. Giedlin, W. Johnston, S. Monroe, (Manager). 69 BASEBALL First row: M. The team under Coach Good won Alfred-Almond's first Class C Championship in a few years. Behind Don Schwartz's pitching and a well balanced hitting team, with a good defense, the team lost another trophy for the B-C league by the flip of a coin. They were defeated in the sectionals by a tough Byron-Bergen team which went on to be the champs. Again this year Baseball looks to be one of the stronger sports for A-A. 70 Kneeling: C. Snyder, M. He didn't have a consistant schedule of classes each weekday but had alternated classes for each day of the week — went to school Monday — Friday from 7 or 8 a.m. to noon then siesta returning to school at 2 or 3 and staying 'til 4:45. The students are required to wear uniforms. He claims he came to study geography, what he calls idioma (Southern Tier slang), government, and American life. Since he has been here the A.A. students have learned a little Spanish and Octavio has learned considerable English. Between Octavio and his friends his dictionary has become dilapidated. Employing sign language, facial expressions, and a jumble of Spanish and Upstate New York twang the A.A. students and teachers have been communicating with Octavio quite well. He likes the life, schools, and the people of the United States. He says that in Colombia the students had to study much more and that his is a very difficult school. He likes football, basketball, soccer, and roller skating. He says the Colombian teenagers still do the twist . His preferences in music are Italian music. The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and what he calls Bolere (jazz or blues is the closest that we could decipher it). 91 Alcen Editors EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: Pattee Stearns PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR: Terry Fraser BUSINESS EDITOR: Lucille Kellogg ACTIVITIES EDITOR: Barb Snyder 92 ART EDITORS: Gene McGraw and Mike Wood CIRCULATION EDITOR: Pete Eisenhardt TYPING EDITOR: Michele Costello SPORTS EDITOR: Mike Obuhanich PATRONS EDITORS: Sue Randolph and Dave Mueller LITERARY EDITOR: Nancy Butler 93 First row: B. Taking over from the '68 ALCEN staff and finally getting itself organized, the '69 ALCEN had quite a rough start. But once it got rolling it went full speed ahead. All those names to type? . . . We're starting out in the hole? . . . Who's this kid? . . . Yet with much help from the Juniors, the 1969 ALCEN can be considered quite success- ful; mainly because of hard working editors and a helpful staff.
