THE EDITOR AND STAFF PROUDLY PRESENT ALCEN Editor-in-Chief John Burdick Literary Editor Susan Scholes Art Editor Sue Montgomery Photography Editor Norma Jackman Business Manager Sharon Post Circulation Editor Betty Kay Patrick Sports Editor _ Karl Barron Advertising Editors Charles Cameron Mike Stuart DEDICA TED TO JEAN The senior class dedicates this book with great- est pleasure to Jean Schlick. We thank her, in a small way, for her patience and willingness to be interrupted, for listening to all our troubles, and being cheerful when no one else is. She has uncomplainingly looked up endless locker combinations, kept track of insurance money and measured seniors' heads. We wouldn't be sur- prised if she helps balance the books with her own coffee money. Perhaps it is especially fitting to dedicate this Alcen to Jean because her help made it all possible. 5 13 25 35 49 67 ADMINISTRATION SENIORS SPORTS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES SPONSORS 1 D M I N I S T R A T I O N 5 PRINCIPAL Mr. Kenneth Clicquennoi First Row: Mr. Paul Powers, Mrs. Robert Turner, Mr. Wiflis Russel. In spite of our size, our class has been able to excel in field days, and our fair booth was a success. These events required close co-opera- tion, believe us! Because we are determined to go to Washington, this year has been one of intense money-raising. Sometimes we have wondered if the school is really a non-proft-making organ- ization. It should be noted, however, that our class managed to win the magazine sale contest. Before the glow of that success died away, we were plunged into the production of our senior play, Gramcrcy Ghost. This was above all a class project, and we all helped in small ways, giving our sympathy to the cast, who rehearsed all hours, even during test week! A who's who of the cast would include Bev, Bill, John and Joe. Mrs. Phelan wos our director. Soon oil the glories of our senior year will be just ancient history, but we will never com- pletely forget them. How could we? A. Brown, President; M. Leach, Vice-President; J. Paul, Secretary; N. From there the following boys went on to compete in section 5 at Rochester: Derek Frechette in the half mile, Mike Minnick in the quarter mile, Jim Evans and Gary Kelleher in the pole vault. Fine individual efforts were put forth by Mike Minnick and Derek Frechette by com- pleting the season undefeated. Mike went on to break the county record in the quarter mile and Derek to cop second in the sectional half mile run. The whole team performed superbly through- out the entire season by decisively downing A and AA schools. Bottom Row: M. Leach, K. Barron, L. Kellogg, T. Rawe, M. McMahon,. Second Row: C. Frechette, R. Whitford, D. Judson, J. Woodruff, G. Kelleher. Top Row: Coach-Mr. McEvoy, D. Frechette, M. Minnick, D. Bennett, J. Evans, S. Rice, D. North. Bottom Row: M. Horwood, J. Mullen, K. Vonderhoef, Cooch-Mr. Hockett. Under the capable coaching of Harold Hackett, our 1962 baseball team ended with a 5 win-5 loss record. Rocky Harwood led our Eagles with a batting average of 324 for the season. In a decisive victory over Fillmore (24-3) Jim Bey connected for a homerun. Despite the loss of four seniors, we are confident that our Golden Eagles will come through with a winning season in '63. The Cross Country team saw another successful year with the best team to date at A-A. They placed second in our invitational which has grown to be the second largest Cross Country event in Western New York. Another bright spot of the season occurred when Karl Barron set a new school record for the 2.2 mile course, in a time of 10:37.5. As a result of the coaching advice and incentive of Mr. Moore and team desire, our team returned home from Alfred with the Section 5 trophy after a romping victory through a field of twenty schools, leaving the First Row: D. Coleman, L. Kellogg, K. Borron, T. Rowe, G. Smith, W. Martin. Standing: J. Buckmoster, D. Whitford, R. Rawleigh, D. Frechette, T. Montgomery, T. Nisbet, R. VanHorn, J. Crandall, Mr. Moore. Started three years ago, the Junior High Cross Country team has been very popular, with about a dozen and a half boys out this year. The team, traveling to Portville for their only meet, handed the Portville Junior High a 16-42 defeat (one point from perfect) with Gary Kellogg out in front. Mr. Moore started the team for the purpose of testing our Junior Highers' interest and ability in the sport and also to give them a chance to experience the competition they will encounter on the varsity squad. This year they defeated Fillmore in a close deciding game and the victorious team carried their coach to the showers. They went on in sectional competition by defeating Holly in a double overtime, decided by a technical goal. After beating Holly, they continued in competition and were eliminated in the semi-finals by Hammondsport. Much credit goes to Mr. McEvoy for his excellent coaching. Starting off with an impressive 5 win—1 loss record this year (losing only to a strong Letchworth team). Credits are earned by girls staying after school. On moving-up day, those girls who have earned forty credits are awarded a letter. UNDERCLASS NOTES A typical underclassman rushes all day long ... to the bus stop ... to home- room ... to classes ... to lunch (where he complains about the food) . . . and home (on rare occasions). He fights homework. Of course, he lives for vacations. This year, to make life easier for students the halls were painted, Mr. Hackett acquired a new machine, two new buses were added to the fleet. The year's most important events included a freshman play, the school bond issue and the Junior Prom. AND QUOTES Why You guys ore green from lack of inexperience! It is the product of those happy characters you see above. The staff and advisers have again over- come tremendous barriers (schoolwork, lack of experience, schoolwork, early deadlines, and more schoolwork) to bring you this edition. Work on the Alcen progressed fairly smoothly this year, due in part to the efforts of our valiant assistants. This year they participated in the book's production to a greater extent than ever before. Certainly they deserve much credit. 50 First Row: J. Clicquennoi, E. Bird, D. Brown, S. Butler, J.
