THE SONGBIRD Through sunny skies O'er Woodland flies The songbird's melody. It drops its joys To barefoot boys 'Neath shady canopy. To children tell Of elfin dell And hidden fairyland. Where dancing feet And moonbeams meet Or seas of starlit sand. Or oft he sings Celestial things That soothe the fevered brow. And chants the love Of Him above And life's eternal vow. He asks no alms To sing his psalms Nor begs for charity. But gives his cheer To who might hear His gay hilarity. 'Tis often told By sages old That smiles we give today Will shine again Through bloom's dark den And drive our cares away. -Merle Zedekar.
