The drug test - the solution? The drug problem is just that - a problem. ASH's solution to this problem is mandatory drug testing for all athletes. School board member, Butch Crenshaw, pro- posed the drug test, Coach Butch Stoker and Principal Aubrey Sanders agreed that ASH athletes should take the test at ASH. Initially, the drug test will be given to all athletes, then par- ticipants will be selected random- ly. The coaches will test the athletes and send the samples to a laboratory to be analyzed. Each athlete will have a code number to keep test results confidential. An athlete who tests positive must go through a series of corrective steps: he will be suspended from the team for a year and be re- quired to attend a chemical dependency unit. lf he wishes to try out for another sport, he must pass another test. After the year of suspension, he may try out for the original sport again. lf the athlete tests positive a second time, he will not be allowed to par- ticipate in any sport. Drug testing may not be THE SOLUTION, but it is a positive step that shows ASH cares about the welfare of its students. e N WS Changes 7

ASH Reaction Do you feel that the drug test violates the rights of athletes? sms f ' Qi ap f t. 4'--1 Sw 'Y i tv ff: Q or it ttet A 6 EPlC I dont think that the drug-testing pro- gram at ASH is an infringement upon the Constitutional rights of an individual for two reasons: l. The Athletic Department at Ash has voluntarily agreed to participate in the program. 2. Any athlete has the option of not submitting himself to the drug test if he chooses to resign from the sport in which he is participating. An infringement or violation of one's rights would imply no alternative. Larry Dufrene Well. not really. the drug test is good. Athletes come clean and the school comes clean. . . When the results come back they will prove they are not involved in drugs. Sean Pickens The mandatory drug test does not violate my rights at all because I feel the test will bring positive results that will bet- ter our quality of life, our performance, and discourage the use of drugs among all high school athletes.
